Only in Amenia
By Ann Linden

For years, residents have jokingly

explained the events, doings
and personalities in their town
with a single phrase: Only in Amenia!
Today, Amenia has just one stoplight and one
shopping center. It has old dairy farms and a
mostly abandoned state facility serving people with
developmental disabilities.
Looking back over the past 300 years since
the first settlers began to arrive from nearby
Connecticut and New England, we see a typical
picture of enthusiastic farmers and businessmen
who came to the wooded hills to clear the land and
build homes, churches and communities. Many
everyday events have occurred within its 43square-mile area in one of the three major valleys

Horses stood in the parking lot of the DeLaVergne

Hotel now Four Brothers Pizza Inn in 1893.
The buildings on the other side of Fountain
Square remain much the same today. The fountain
in the square was originally a water drinking
place for the horses. This is the center of the old
hamlet called Paynes Corners. Once the Dutchess
Turnpike (Route 44) was built in 1805 the
increased traffic caused a building boom.

of the town.
But there are and were a number
of events, places and buildings
that are unique and people who
are extraordinary. There are some
that are so outstanding, in fact,
that being described as only in
Amenia is not a joke, but a great
compliment.
u

The first of Amenias one-ofa-kind features is the view from

DeLaVergne Hill on Route 44,
looking south to the Wassaic
hamlet. From that point, visitors
see the Silo Ridge golf course, now
being completely updated. Much of
the hamlet of Amenia is visible, as
well as a horse farm and several old
dairy farms. The small lake on the
golf course is an old iron ore bed,
now flooded. And in the distance,

where the hills part, is the separate

hamlet known as Wassaic.
The view from DeLaVergne
Hill, without question, is the most
beautiful view in Dutchess County,
and it is only in Amenia.
At the bottom of DeLaVergne
Hill is the center of the hamlet of
Amenia. Surprisingly, it is not a
typical New England-style town,
but a Victorian village dating from
the second half of the 19th century.
Many of the buildings were built
after the Harlem Railroad came
through that valley.
There are several estates in
Amenia, including Wethersfield
Farm, that welcome visitors. Once
the home of Chauncy Stillman, a
partner of Rockefeller, the grounds
boast great views, extensive
gardens and a coach-house

There are also are several wineries in the area.
Troutbeck is located east of Amenia in the hamlet
of Leedsville. Named for Leeds, England, a large
wool mill once existed there. Troutbeck has a
history of over two centuries of guests and residents
that have included the greatest writers and thinkers
of the 19th and 20th centuries: Emerson, Thoreau,
Twain, Burroughs, Lewis Mumford and Thurgood
Marshall, among many others.
The first meetings for the establishment of the
NAACP were held at Joel Spingarns Troutbeck in
the early 20th century.
Cooks Hill, a small rise in the center of Amenia
hamlet, was the location of The Amenia Seminary,
the outstanding secondary private school where
students were drawn from all of the United States in
the 19th century. The three white-frame buildings
housed classes for both men and women. With the
growth of public secondary schools, the seminary
closed and was replaced by the current brick
building. At first it was used by all grades from one

events there.
A large number of boarding
houses and hotels developed
around the lake. Fishing and
boating were available, and
the resulting healthy business
environment was the envy of all the
surrounding towns.
Along with the racetrack and a
small airport in Dover to the south,
extraordinary local baseball was
played on Cooks Hill every Sunday.
The smallest drive-in movie in
the world was located at the foot
of DeLaVergne hill ... yes, only in
Amenia.
Some of the boarding houses
were located outside the town
center in other Amenia hamlets,

such as Amenia Union. This Oblong

Valley location south of Leedsville is
a settlement built right on the New
York-Connecticut state line. It is
easy to explain why the hamlet had
two of everything: two one-room
schools, two cemeteries and two
churches. There were two stores
and houses with two addresses
(one in each state). There were
also two blacksmiths since
horse and carriage was the main
transport at that time. Amenia
Union was noted for producing
the famous Buckley farm plow.
Of the some eight major
hamlets (the settlements that had
their own post offices), Wassaic
is the largest and, historically,
the most prosperous. Located
on the Harlem Valley Railroad,
it has been a shipping center for

agricultural products for years.

It has its own fire company,
and many surviving Victorian
commercial buildings and homes
that set the stage for a true
renaissance.
In the 19th century, it was the
location of Gridley Iron Works
and later, the first Borden Milk
Condensery, both now closed.
In the 20th century, the Maxon
Mills grain elevator was built in
the center of the hamlet. Today, it
is the arts center for The Wassaic
Project. The old Borden Factory
has been carefully restored and
is used by Pawling Corporation
Architectural Products. The one
church in the hamlet, Gridley
Chapel, is on the National Register
of Historic Places and is still used
seasonally.

How About a Music Venue?

By Gabriel Napoleon

Throughout its history, Amenia

has been classified in certain
ways. Amenia is a farm town.
Amenia is a scenic town.
Amenia is a baseball town. But
recently, Amenia has donned a
new identity: a cultural town.
First came the Wassaic Project,
then the Amenia Drive-in movie
theater. And whats next? A music
venue? Well, why not?
The concept was born at a town
meeting back in 2010. Town Hall
had recently moved into the old
elementary school building, and
boards occasionally met in its

auditorium. During one meeting,

resident and part-time musician
Peter Cascone, sitting in the
audience, had a different vision.
Hey, this is a nice stage, this
should be a venue, he said,
recalling the thought.
Eventually, the soon-to-be
producer wrote his proposal and
came up with a name: the Amenia
Music Hall. By 2012, Peter Cascone
Productions and Amenia settled on
a license agreement.
Technically, the concert hall
has already seen its start, though
perhaps a premature one. After
three concerts, those behind the
music, including Cascone, a few
Town Board members and even
Silo Ridge, have put the project on
hiatus for some major renovations,

namely restoring aged bathrooms,

repairing a leaky roof, installing
a heating and cooling system
and, most relevantly, improving
acoustics.
Testing the waters did meet
with productivity though, in the
producers perspective. He said the
first concert, in March 2013, was a
hit. The second one, that June, was
less so, but still, it gave the music
hall team a frame of reference for
success. Accordingly, the third
concert, this March, drew back

to the bluegrass, troubadour and

flamenco focus of the first and was
very popular.
However, one problem
overwhelmed, a problem severe
when considering the context: the
unsuitable acoustics.
Spirits not as high as they
once were, a little fortune fell
into play when Silo Ridge Field
Club happened to clear out their
clubhouse, donating sundry goods
to various entities.
Of that lot, curtains were donated

The building itself had a rich
history. According to Amenia
Historical Society records, it was
built in 1833 and served as the
Presbyterian Church until 1867.
It was then sold to James Taylor
and became known as Taylor
Hall. Social activities were hosted
upstairs, such as dances, plays and
basketball games.
The first floor was rented by
Simon Fry for the sale of tinware
and stoves, and was used as an
office for the Amenia Foundry.
His son, Benjamin Fry, succeeded
his father in the business and
purchased the building from Taylor.
The building was later known as
the Amenia Opera House before
being renovated into the Amenia

A Road Map of Amenia

By Whitney Joseph

The town of Amenia is rich with history. It was formally

organized more than 300 years ago, in 1704. Since that time
the town and its residents have been naming roadways public
and private lending both direction and personality to a place
known to be as unique as it is beautiful.
A conversation with Town
Historian Arlene Iuliano addressed
some of Amenias more unusual
road names. Iuliano said one thats
always interested her is Yellow City
Road, which is in the Leedsville
hamlet of Amenia.
According to her, there were
sulfur springs in the area, lending
to its yellow color and reference
to the region as the yellow city.
A map by Amenia resident Myron
Benton, done between 1856 and
1858, referenced the road. The
Bentons were one of the most

historical families in the area,

Iuliano said.
The whole area was called
Yellow City, she said, and it led
not quite all the way to the sulfur
springs, and that seems to be where
the name Yellow City Road was
derived from. Leedsville was the
center of a very, very developed
area of the time. In fact, they
thought it would be the center of
the town of Amenia at one time.
Leedsville Road connects from
Route 343 heading toward Sharon,
Conn., all the way to Prospect Road

on Depot Hill. Iuliano said Yellow

City Road was different from other
street names in that it wasnt named
after a family or a direction.
Most of the names of the road
either took a family name that
lived there or the name of Main
Street or the section of town, like
North or South street. But this
one seems to have been derived
from that particular happening,
she said, adding the sulfur springs
were on the edge of the Oblong
Valley mountain range bordering
Connecticut and can likely be found
on a map.
Another name Iuliano is fond
of is Powder House Road, but that
roads origin, she said, remains a
mystery.

I dont know where that

name is derived from, she said,
adding roads today continue to be
introduced. There are town roads
and private roads named for 911.
The 911 roads have signs which are
white with green letters; the town
roads have white letters with green
signs.
These days Powder House is a
town road, though Iuliano said that
might not have always been the
case.
Another name of interest is
Sinpatch Road, which heads off
Route 22 and winds its way to Bog
Hollow Road in Wassaic. That road,
said Iuliano, has a great history
behind it. Fascinating, she said,
though simple.

Peace poles representing 192 U.N. member nations line the grounds of
the World Peace Sanctuar y in Wassaic, with the message May Peace
Prevail on Earth written in a number of languages on the poles. The
sanctuar y holds events throughout the year on its grounds with the goal of
spreading that message of peace.

It was named for what it was,

the historian said. They thought
there were sinners down there.
Basically, the residents in that
section of the Wassaic hamlet
had a reputation for misbehaving,
and local lore has it that their
neighborhood was named for their
antics. Another legend is that a local
minister was the one who named it
Sinpatch, based on the reputation
of an especially naughty family who
lived in a patch of sin, according
to Iuliano.
I think its a reflection of the
history of the times, because thats
what people did. They named
things for how they felt, so there
are a variety of names that are
different, though that variety is

less than using family names or

directions, especially over here in
the more rural side of the county,
she said. People expressed their
feelings, even in the names of their
roads. Its not unusual for them to
come up with something like this.
An example of a private road
named after a family is Folan Road,
which connected what was once the
Palmer farmland on Cascade Road
to Perrys Corners Road. That was in
the mid-1900s, according to Iuliano.
To me the road belonged to the
property owner and was named
after the Folans, the only people
who lived there, she said.
Iuliano added that a lot of
Amenias roads were named before
Route 22 was built, creating a maze
of roads throughout the town.
But its interesting that some

))''
))'!)
$,'$()

names did not change over many,

many years, and that we still have
them today, she said. They
tended, especially if they were
farms, to have the last name of the
family. Nowadays youll see they
use first names, like Anns Road or
Joyces Road, but that doesnt mean
anything as far as history goes.
Roads continue to be named in
Amenia, as they are constructed.
As Iuliano said, a majority of them
tend to be private roads these days,
leading to private homes or farms.
When thats the case they can be
as creative, or not, as the property
owner desires.
So while driving around Amenia
why not keep your eyes open for
some interesting street signs and
on the road, of course you never
know what youll discover!

Amenia Farmers Market

By Tommie Pearson Jr.

Theres only one place in Amenia where you can find a wide
selection of fresh produce, farm products, prepared foods and ...
blankets, pet futons and mattress pads made out of sheep skin?
Now in its fifth season, the
Amenia Farmers Market hosts a
variety of local artisans and farmers,
each of them sharing with the
community their homegrown foods
and homemade crafts.
The market opened in the
summer of 2010 with just half a
dozen vendors. Having a market was
the idea of Rudy Eschbach, owner-
operator of Cedar Hill Farm in
Amenia. Apparently, gathering local
farmers and artisans was necessary
because there were very few outlets
for small town farmers to share their
goods.
There wasnt a place for local

farmers to get together and share

their products, Eschbach said, so
we came together and started our
own.
Now, you can find more than 15
vendors at the farmers market, held
all year long.
The market is dedicated to the
sale of wholesome, fresh food,
Eschbach said.
He has been participating in the
market since its beginning, and
he said not only does the market
meet its goal, it also brings people
together, promotes a sense of
community and gives farmers an
opportunity to meet the people

buying their products.

Talking with the customers is
one of my favorite parts, Eschbach
said. The customers always ask,
Is this organic? Like Eschbachs
Black Angus beef and pork, most
products sold are organic, grass
fed, free of antibiotics and growth
hormones.
Pattie Camillone is the owner-
operator of WholeyOats Granola.
As the name suggests, she sells
granola and granola bars made with
natural ingredients, such as whole
grain oats, flaxseed meal, maple
syrup and honey. Shes one of the
original vendors who participated in
the market following its conception.
For Camillone, the farmers market
served as a springboard to get
WholeyOats recognized by the
community.

I really wanted to sell locally,

Camillone said. Participating in the
market helped me to get my product
out there and have people try it at an
inexpensive rate.
Camillone has been successful in
her endeavors. WholeyOats can now
be found in places like LaBonnes
Markets, Adams Fairacre Farms,
Willow Brook Farms and McEnroes
Organic Farm. Camillone said she
owes much of her success to the
farmers market.
Ive made so many good
connections as a result of
participating.
Making connections and forming
relationships is a consistent theme
among participants and patrons
alike.

the market again and again.

I enjoy knowing where the food I eat is
coming from. Coming to the market gives me the
opportunity to meet the farmers and provide them
with a review of their products, she said.
Sophie Meili, market manager and co-owner of
Meili Farm, hopes that tourists and residents alike
will patronize the market.
You can get a feel for the area by coming to the
market, she said. It is representative of the people
of this area.
Growth is good, but Meilis only hope is that the
market will remain a vibrant part of the community.
The Amenia Farmers Market is held all year
long. In the winter months the market is brought
inside the Amenia Town Hall, and is held every first
and third Saturday from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. The summer
season began on May 16; the market is held outdoors
during the warmer months in the Amenia Town
Hall parking lot. Its open every Friday during the
summer into the fall, from 3 to 7 p.m.
