Aeneid OutlineI.Book Ia.Aeneas is sailing from Troy to Italy after Troy has been ruined by a war with the Greeks b.Juno is doing everything in her power to stop the Trojans from reachingItaly because she is angry with themi.Angry because Trojans are destined to overthrow Carthageii.A Trojan (Paris) had not given her the golden applec.She asks Aeolus to start a storm that destroys most of their fleetd.Neptune stops the storm because he thinks Aeolus has overstepped his boundaries and seven ships survivee.The ships land on the coast of Libyaf.Aeneas’s mother Venus worries that the Trojans won’t reach Italysuccessfullyg.Jupiter says they will and Aeneas will win a battle and found Lavinium,then his son will found a city, and then Romulus will found Romeh.Jupiter tells the people of Carthage and Dido to accept Aeneas and hiscrew peacefullyi.Venus, disguised as hunter from Carthage, finds Aeneas and tells him togo to Carthage and see Didoi.Also tells him that Carthage was founded after Dido’s husband waskilled by her brother in the old city of Tyre and Dido and her followers fled j.Aeneas recognizes the hunter as Venusk.Aeneas goes to Carthage covered by a cloud Venus createdl.He sees a temple for Juno and goes inside, after they are inside Dido andothers come in, including the people from the ships lost in the storm, thecloud disappearsm.Dido welcomes Aeneas and his crew and invites them to a banquetn.Venus sends Cupid (disguised as Ascanius) to fill Dido with love for Aeneas, she is and asks Aeneas about his journeysII.Book IIa.Aeneas tells her about the Greeks constructing a giant wooden horse andthen supposedly sailing home b.Lacoon was suspicious of the horse and threw a spear into it’s sidec.Shepherds then come into the city with a Greek captive who said that hehad left the army since he was supposed to be sacrificedd.Sinon, the captive, tells the Trojans that the horse was created becauseMinerva was angry with them for taking the Palladiume.He says that if the horse is harmed in anyway, Troy will be destroyed andthat they would be able to defeat Greece if they brought the horse intotheir cityf.Lacoon and his two sons are then killed by two serpents from the ocean,which makes the Trojans believe the story because they see it as them being punished for harming the horse
 
g.The Greeks come out of the horse during the night and let in the remainingforcesh.The Greeks start destroying the Trojans, who are helplessi.Hector appears to Aeneas in a dream and tells him to flee with the Penatesto a new city j.Aeneas wakes up the next morning and goes out into the city at war andfinds Pyrrhus at Priam’s palace killing Priam’s son and then Priamk.Aeneas finds Helen and wants to kill her since he thinks she is the cause othe war l.Venus stops him and tells him the war was the Gods’ fault and not Helen’sm.Aeneas finds his father and tells him that he is fleeing, but his father doesnot want to until a flame appears around his head and they see a shootingstar n.They all (Aeneas, his father, his wife, and son) flee, but his wife is losto.He returns and finds her spirit, which tells him that he is supposed to finda new wife in the new cityIII.Book IIIa.Aeneas tells of how they sailed from Troy to Thrace b.In Thrace, Priam’s other dead son tells them that Thrace had been an allyto Troy, but had since switched allegiance to the Greeks, so they shouldfleec.They perform a funeral for Priam’s sond.The Trojans leave to Delos, where Apollo tells them to leave to a placethat is implied to be Cretee.They go to Crete, but are stricken by plaguef.They find out that they had misinterpreted what Apollo told them, and thatApollo had actually told them to go to Hesperia in Italyg.They are driven off course and land on an island with bird-like Harpies,who attack themh.The leader of the Harpies tells them that they will be stricken with afamine that forces them to eat their tables when they build a new cityi.Aeneas and company continue to island hop until they find out that one of Priam’s sons has become king of a Greek city j.Andromache, who was captured with Priam’s son, tells Aeneas to sailaround Sicily to reach Italy because the water between Sicily and Italy hasa whirlpool and a six-headed monster k.They land in Sicily and find a Greek who was a part of Ulysses’s crew,who tells them that Ulysses has blinded the Cyclops, who then appearsl.They escape and land in Drepanum, where they learn of the death of Aeneas’s father m.And then the storm happens that brought them to CarthageIV.Book IVa.Dido considers breaking her vow of faithfulness to her husband becauseAeneas has made her want to remarry b.Her sister, Anna, tells her that it would be good for the military to gain theTrojans
 
c.Dido temporarily holds off on the building of Carthaged.Juno sees a relationship between Aeneas and Dido as a way to keep theTrojans from reaching Italy, so she sets up a truce with Venus to getAeneas and Dido alone together and eventually marriede.When Aeneas and Dido and the rest are out hunting, Juno brings on astorm that puts Aeneas and Dido alone together in a cavef.Dido considers herself and Aeneas to be marriedg.Jupiter sends Mercury to remind Aeneas that he is avoiding his duty tofound a cityh.Aeneas sets up for the ships to be set to sail, but avoids telling Didoi.Dido finds out and is mad, but Aeneas explains that he must fulfill fate to build a new city and thus must sail to Italy j.Dido gets Anna to try to get Aeneas to stay, but he continues on as plannedk.Dido then tells Anna to start a fire to burn Aeneas’s things, saying that itwill help her let go or bring Aeneas back, but she wants to use it to killherself l.Mercury tells Aeneas again to leave, which Aeneas and his crew dom.When Dido sees them leaving, she considers sending after them, bydecides against it and instead curses themn.She then kills herself with Aeneas’s sword and dies in Anna’s armsV.Book Va.Aeneas sees the flames from Dido’s fire and fears for her  b.Their ships are again stuck in a storm and they find themselves back inDrepanumc.There, Aeneas performs funeral rites for his father (sacrifices) and holdsgames in his honor. He sees a serpent in his father’s tombd.The games are after i.A rowing contestii.Raceiii.Fightiv.Archerye.Juno ruins the festivities by sending the goddess Iris disguised as a Trojanwoman to excite an uproar to settle in Drepanum and burn the shipsf.Aeneas is notified in time to pray to Jupiter for rain, which saves the shipsg.Aeneas allows the Trojan who want to stay in Drepanum to do so and theyare permitted to stayh.Venus asks Neptune for a safe voyage, but he demands a sacrifice inreturni.The sacrifice is the pilot, who falls into the sea and forces Aeneas to pilotthe shipVI.Book VIa.Aeneas and his crew head to Cumae, where Aeneas meets the Sibyl, whotells him that there are going to face a war and further opposition fromJuno
