United States of America has become the envy of the world. One of the principle reasons is that it is truly a land of opportu-nity. A land where the “poor” can live like kings and queens incomparison to the truly poor of the developing world. It is a land wherethe disadvantaged and down trodden of the earth, with some diligenceand perserverance, can have a life of relative ease and comfort. On afairly regular basis we hear of the creation of the latest, “lucky” multi-millionaire, the holder of the winning ticket in some lottery. In the worldof business and finance the opportunities to succeed are unrivaled. Dur-ing the final years of the millenium just past, America has experiencedits longest sustained economic growth for many decades. From 1989 to2001, it is estimated that the number of millionaire Americans will havenearly doubled, from three million to some five million, or 4.7% of thepopulation.1 Indeed, America, of all places in the world, is a land whereone has the opportunity of going from rags to riches. Such opportunitiesand possibilities certainly appeal to the natural heart of all mankind.Such appeals, however, are greatly tempered for the Christian bythe words of Christ: “It is easier for a camel to go through a needle’seye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” Luke 18:25and “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, andlose his own soul?” Mark 8:36. Indeed the riches of the kingdom of thisworld are fleeting. In the time span of eternity their duration and enjoy-ment are but for a moment at best. It is infinitely more important and“profitable” for us to focus, and help others around us to focus, upon theeternal riches offered to us by the kingdom of Heaven. Christ’s kingdomprovides the opportunity to go from rags to riches, not to just 4.7% of thepopulation, but to every down trodden and disavantaged individual—toevery sinner—of this earth. The astute investor will recognize and follow the counsel of Christwhen He said: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, wheremoth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth norrust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: Forwhere your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19–21.We are indeed unwise and foolish if we focus our attention upon this
