NATURE AND MAN

The Bee

A bee!! Chase it.

But why?
It has its place.

They sting, you say

And cause allergies.
Oh, yes, but you intrude.

Acknowledge the bee.

They work all day collecting nectar
And pollenising plants.
You rob them of their work
And label them aggressor.
They do not sting you recklessly.
Each sting costs a bee its life.

But you THEY fear.

You are a threat to their existence
With your heedless poisons.

Acknowledge the bee.

It knows its place.
The Spider

Spiders! Yugh!!
But why?
They have their place.

They’re dangerous.
They bite, you say.
They’re huge and hairy
Lurking in dark corners
Waiting.

Yes, waiting for a fly,

For a meal, not for you.
You do not feature in their life
Unless you threaten harm.
Would that we were half as passive
But we slay for fun.

Study the spider

As it spins a thread
We emulate and envy.
A thread invisible and light
For all its elasticity and strength,
swung across a path
A base for a creation
Magical and awe-inspiring
When dew drops cling.

Study the spider,

It knows its place.
The Snake

A snake!! Kill it!!

But why?
It has its place.

They’re poisonous and evil.

They bite, you say.
They’re cold and slimy,
Lurking in dark places,
Waiting.

No, it’s hibernating

Or basking in the sun.
They have no use for you.
You are not food.
Stand still or back away.
They mean no harm.

Acknowledge the snake.

It uses shelter you provide,
But in return
It keeps your home frog and rodent free,
A veritable Pied Piper.

Acknowledge the snake.

It knows its place.
Man

Now consider man.

But why?
He makes his place.

He has dominion over all,

But he abuses his power.
He fells the forests
Drains the wetlands
Pollutes the air
Poisons the sea.
He kills indiscriminately,
Procreates obsessively
Until the earth
No longer can sustain him.

He is selfish, arrogant
Greedy, avaricious
And blind.

Fear man.
He doesn’t know his place.
