To all whom these presents shall come Greeting whereas by an Inquisition indented and taken on the eighth day of July 1930 before Brigadier- General John Tyson Wigan companion of our most honourable order of the Bath -- Companion of our most distinguished order of St Michael and St George Companion of Distinguished Service Order Sheriff of our said County by virtue of our writ of ad quod domnum issued out of and returned into the Central office of our Supreme Court of Judicature and filed therein it has been found upon the oath of honest and lawful jurors in our said County that it will not be to the damage or prejudice of us or any other person or persons if we should grant unto Ernest James Wythes his heirs and the signs Licence to hold and keep a Market in the Town of Epping on Monday of each week in every year in perpetuity instead of Thursday or Friday in each week and whereas by his humble petition the said Ernest James Wythes of Copped Hall Epping in our said County (hereinafter called the petitioner) has represented unto us that Royal Predecessor His late Majesty King Henry the Third by letters patent bearing the date the 30th day of March in the 37th year of his reign granted and confirmed to the Abbott and Canons of the Church of the Holy Cross of Waltham and their successors for ever the rights of holding one market every week on Monday at the Epping Heath in our said County that our Royal Predecessor Her late majesty Queen Elizabeth by letters patent dated the 24th day of January in the 17th year of her reign granted to Thomas Heneage and his wife right to hold enjoy and keep within the Manor of Epping aforesaid one Market on Friday for ever that our Royal Predecessor his late majesty King Charles II by letters patent dated the 17th day of October in the 23rd year of his reign granted to Thomas Grey the right of holding one market on every Thursday in every week yearly at Epping aforesaid. That the market rights were included in the purchase of the Copped Hall Estate Essex in the year 1870 by the Petitioners Grandfather the late George Wythes and that the Petitioner is the present estate owner of the said market rights. That the petitioner has not been able to ascertain that the said market within the memory of living persons has ever been held on Thursday but that from the best of his knowledge and belief the said Market was duly held from the time of the said grant of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth till about the year 1918 on one day in every week. That about the year 1918 during the War the day for holding the said Market was without our Licence changed to a Monday and has from that time until now been held on that day. That Monday is a more convenient day day for holding the said Market and is the only day of the week in which a Market is not held in some other Town within a radius of 17 miles from the Town of Epping And the Petitioner has therefore most humbly prayed that we would be graciously pleased to grant Our Royal Licence and Permission to him and his successors forever to have hold and keep his said Market at Epping aforesaid in each week of the year on Monday instead of Thursday or Friday together with tolls stallage piccage with all liberties and free customs appertaining to the said Market And Whereas We having taken the said Petition into Our Royal Consideration are graciously pleased to comply with the of the said Petition. Together with tolls stallage and piccage and with all liberties and free customs appertaining to the said Market which was formerly held on Thursday or Friday. To have hold and keep the same unto the said Ernest James Wythes his heirs and assigns for ever without interruption or impediment of Us Our heirs or successors or any others whatsoever. In witness whereof we have caused these our letters to be made Patent. Witness ourself at Westminster the 16th day of September in the 21st year of Our Reign.
