AMISOM is here to help the Somali government and we are here to train Somali
soldiers who are already in service and the training which is conducted here is
organized by the Somalia Federal Government themselves and it is forwarded to
AMISOM and these other training partners. This should be made clear, there is
no other training that comes outside of that.

STORY

As part of the continuous effort to boost the skills of the Somali National Army,
the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is conducting training on key
security aspects including vehicle check point assimilation.

Over 300 officers of the SNA are currently undergoing the training being
conducted by AMISOM and the European Union Training Team at the Jazeera
Training Centre.
This is part of the wider effort by AMISOM, to boost the capacity of the various
security institutions of the Somali Federal Government to be able to facilitate its
eventual exit.
Speaking during the training session today, the AMISOM Chief Instructor MAJ.
Amza Martin said this is a continuous effort, key to the missions mandate.

AMISOM is here to help the Somali government and we are here to train Somali
soldiers who are already in service and the training which is conducted here is
organized by the Somalia Federal Government themselves and it is forwarded to
AMISOM and these other training partners. This should be made clear, there is
no other training that comes outside of that, he said.

He explained that the days session would equip the soldiers with skills to enable
them assess situation for any possible security threats and be able to ward them
off effectively.

The Somali National Army has been strained by two decades of war and is
currently undergoing extensive capacity building.
As part of the effort, AMISOM also conducts joint operations with the Somali
National Army and their latest operation saw 10 towns liberated from the al
Shabaab.
