Definition
Application letter is document through which
you introduce yourself to the employer. It is also
known as a cover letter that provides information
about your skills and expertise to your employer.
The basic objective of this letter is to invite you to
an interview. It will be complimenting your resume
so it is as important as the resume itself.
Kinds
General
The general application letter is typically sent along with a resume to
a potential employer, for an internship or temporary job. This letter
is very generalized, and it summarizes the potential employee's
experience and work history.

Specific
The specific cover letter contains more facts about the position and
applicant. It includes the date of the job ad, the title and position being
applied for along with experience that relates directly to that position.

Kinds
Resume Letter
This application letter is useful for those reentering the
working world after an absence or long layoff or for
those who have a scattered work history with many gaps
and breaks. The letter itself resembles a resume because it
outlines all the skills and experience the potential
employee has gained through his varied roles.

Kinds
Career Change Letter
This letter is best suited for those with experience in other
fields who recently updated their skill sets with a new

Tips
Your letter should be clear and to the point. The employers
first impression of you is formed through this document.
Always make sure the letter is formal and does not use
slang or informal language.
Include a phone number, e-mail address or name of your
reference and when for the employer to contact them.
Alternatively, ask someone to type a reference up for you
and include it when you give your CV to the employer.

You can type or hand-write your letter. However,
typing is preferable because it is considered to be
more formal. Use a relevant font, (try to go for Arial or
Times New Roman, instead of Comic Sans), as this
will ruin the reputation of the letter immediately.
Make sure spelling and grammar are correct and use
paragraphs and punctuation.
