sl°m has, within its teachings, a weekly prayer servicereferred to as Æal°tul Jumu`ah. This Æal°t has beenmentioned within the Noble Qur˜°n itself within theS£rah of the same name – al-Jumu`ah (62):

“O you who have true faith! When the call is proclaimed to  prayer on the day of Jumu`ah (Friday - the Day of Assembly) then hasten to the remembrance of All°h and leave all business. That is best for you if you but knew!”
What is Æal°tul Jumu`ah? Æal°tul Jumu`ah is simply the sameÆal°tul Zuhr on the day of Friday
(Jumu`ah)
- however it hasafew differences from the regular Æal°tthat we perform.First off, the Æal°tul Zuhr that wecommonly perform is four Rak`at,however Æal°tul Zuhr on the day of Fridaywhose name is Æal°tul Jumu`ah – is onlytwo Rak`at. So then how did it happenthat this Æal°t was changed into a twoRak`at Æal°t? We will discuss this pointlater on.The second difference is that it isobligatory
(w°jib)
that it be performed in congregation
(Jam°`at)
however it is not obligatory to perform any of theother Æal°t in Jam°`at - Æal°tul Zuhr, `A•r Maghrib, `Ish° andFajr. The third difference is that in which ever locality Æal°tul Jumu`ah is held – it is obligatory
(w°jib)
upon the people wholive within a distance of two Farsakh (12.48 km) in everydirection to attend that Æal°t, except if they have a validexcuse. The fourth difference is that in which ever locality the Æal°tul Jumu`ah is established, it is not permissible for anotherÆal°tul Jumu`ah to be held for a distance of one S°`a (6 km) –and thus, only that one Æal°tul Jumu`ah can be held. Just imagine if such a Æal°t were to be held (keeping theselaws in mind) - what kind of enormity and magnitude it
1
S£rah 62, Verse 6
would hold! If for example in this city that we are presentlyin – meaning Tehran – if there was to be one Æal°tul Jumu`ahheld here
2
,then we would see that for the distance of twoFarsakh (12.48 km) – from the point we are presently at untilthe north point of Shimr°n and to the south point near thecity of Ray and from all points stretching from the east to thewest of this city – everyone would gather in one area. Inaddition, for a distance of 12 kilometers from this pointpeople from all around would join all together for this Æal°tand for a distance of 6 kilometers, no other Æal°tul Jumu`ahwould be permitted to take place and thus, we would belimited to this one Æal°tul Jumu`ah. Just imagine what kind of agreat gathering would take place at that time! This Æal°t must be performed in two Rak`at – not four Rak`at.Why?? It has been related quite frequently in the a¶°dith andnarrations and is also one of the established beliefs of ourfaith that:
-)8!    3:'3JM  33
This means that this general prayer for allpeople - this Æal°t which all people must gatherto perform and which must not be like theother Æal°tul Jam°`at that we sometimes seetaking place in the Masjid where people arescattered about (with small groups of Æal°tul Jam°`at individual from one another) - and inwhich it is obligatory that before the Æal°t, twospeeches are given – this Æal°t must bepreceded by two speeches which actually takethe place of the two Rak`at of Æal°t.This is the point which I wished to bring forth that within oursacred religion of Isl°m, we have a belief that speeches andlectures are actually a part of the religion – it is a part of theÆal°t. Am¢r al-Mo’min¢n `Al¢ ibn Ab¢
 W
°lib (prayers be uponhim) has even said,
“The khutbah (speech) is Æal°t.”
During the time that the Im°m (of Jumu`ah) is giving thespeech, the people must listen to what he is saying – allpeople must remain quiet and must not say a word – theymust be listening to the khußbah. As long as the speaker hasnot come down from the chair on which he was standing todeliver the lecture, all of the people in attendance must besitting as if they were in a state of Æal°t. Of course there isone exception here that the Im°m of Jumu`ah who is givingthe speeches need not be sitting or facing the Qiblah.
2
Please keep in mind that this lecture was given prior to the victoryof the Isl°mic Revolution, and thus, Æal°tul Jumu`ah was not takingplace in Iran. (Tr.)
