MESSAGEFROM THE
PRESIDENT
It is with great honor and privilege that I begin my term asPresident of the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation. I would like to thank Glen Pottenger for his hard work and efforts as OTF President in2006 and I would also like to thank Dr. Chuck Darrah for hisdedication and wisdom he provided this organization while involvedwith the Board. We welcome new board member Mike Dietrich fromLesco. Mike’s experience and background make him a valuableasset to our organization. Thanks also to the current OTF board fortheir dedication and passion to the turf industry in Ohio.It was great to see many of you at the OTF Conference and Showin December. The show continues to be one of the largest in thecountry with attendance at nearly 3000. In case you missed it,OTF awarded over $150,000 in scholarships and research grantsthis year and we continue to be the model organization for the OhioState University and for our supportive relationship with them. Along with the conference and show, 2006 was successful onother fronts, as OTF initiated new programs and changes whichincluded: 1st annual Ohio Turfgrass Week, Regional Seminars, revised the OTF mission statement, created an OTF Publicity/ Marketing brochure and laid the groundwork on an industry wideeconomic impact study for turfgrass in the state of Ohio. As President, my Program of Work for OTF in 2007 includes:Continue to create opportunities that provide value for ourcurrent members and sow the seeds for future membersby communicating the mission, tradition and benefits of ourorganization to the high schools, colleges and universitystudents who will become our industry tomorrow.Increasing membership exposure through creating relationshipswith allied associations.Recruiting new members through focusing on high schoolgrounds and athletic facilities.Improving exposure at the Statehouse.Explore options for creating educational opportunities throughthe web site. Most all of these are either a continuation or initiation ofthoughts that came out of the OTF strategic planning meetingsin the fall of 2004. As it does every January, the OTF Board and Committees met lastmonth at the Research Facility to hold the 2007 OTF CommitteeSummit meetings. The outcome of these two day sessions is toset goals and determine budgetary needs for 2007. The board isdeveloping plans for 2007 programs, opportunities and benefitsfor our valued members, and although it is work in progress(at the time of publication), we look forward to conveying theseplans when they are complete. One immediate change which came from the summit meetingsin January was to change the timing on the publication of
Turf News
. If you are wondering why you received your first issuelater than in past years, it was determined by the PublicityCommittee that in order to improve the timing of our articlesand event promotion we send the first issue out in February/ March instead of January/February.The 2007 calendar of events is set. Please see “Calendarof Events” on page 2 or visit the OTF website for details.Note that this years OTF Scholarship and Research Fund-raising Golf Tournament will be held on October 1 at NCRCountry Club in Dayton. Reserve the date on your calendarand as we are expecting to sell out all foursomes.Once again, I look forward to this year as President of OTFand please if you have thoughts or suggestions on how wecan improve OTF, send me (markjordan@westfieldgrp.com) orKevin Thompson (kthompson@offinger.com) an email. Yours for Better Turf,Mark Jordan, CGCS
