superstitions and
fictions.

only be acquired
through certain
hardships,
difficulties, trials
and adventures

worthy
Plato: Knowledge is obtained
through rational thinking or
contemplation while belief is
acquired through senses.
Aristotle : the real world refers
to only what is observable.
Things that can we observe are
the object of knowledge.
Non observable things like ethics
and religion are not the realm of
knowledge but in that of belief.
Belief can be right and wrong.
SOURCES OF KNOWLEDGE
1) 96:1-5
2) 2:23
3) 16:78
In Islam : Knowledge is truth
Truth relates to the nature of Allah (Fitratallah), His
creation and all phenomena, acquired through
revelation, reasoning and experiences of the senses.
All phenomena : tangible / untangible
Stone, magnet / poverty, ..ism
SO : the object of knowledge in Islam are God, His
visible and invisible creation and the tangible and
intangible phenomena.
The concept of knowledge in Islam is wider than the
Western in terms of the sources, purpose and objects of
knowledge.

discussed) its sources =
rationalist / realist +
REVELATION.
Realist : Ook is the
observable world

Religious knowledge means
knowledge which has direct links with
religious beliefs, rituals, etiquette and
conducts.
Islam enjoins acquiring both
knowledge. However Islam regards
religious knowledge more important
because it is the knowledge that
directly leads man to know his
Creator and how to worship Him
correctly.
Provide guidance and purification of
the soul.
Therefore, it is obligatory for every

Worldly knowledge means the aspect of
knowledge which acquaint man with this
universe and with the skills, expertise and
professionalism in relation to his wordly living.
As for worldly knowledge, acquiring any aspect
of it is not obligatory upon every Muslim on
individual basis like religious knowledge. But,
it is obligatory on all Muslim on a collective
basis.
It is a communal obligatory, every particular
Muslim community must make sure that a
section of it necessarily acquires each and
every aspect of it.
This necessity according to Al-Ghazali becomes
even more serious if such a discipline has
certain indispensable importance and benefit
to societal existence.
Examples: Medicine, Mathematics,
Engineering.
Al-Qaradawi said, ..it is obligatory upon
Muslim community to get some of its citizen to
specialize in all various fields of human
endeavours (worldly knowledge) psychology,
education, economics etc.
Al-Ghazalis view
Knowledge is broadly classified in Islam into two categories:->
Praiseworthy knowledge
=>Any type of knowledge that leads and guides to
Allah, righteousness and service to humanity.
=>Knowledge that is beneficial to self and other
Blameworthy knowledge
=> Any form of knowledge that is opposed to the
revelation, misguides and dissuades from the path
of Allah, does not benefit humanity in anyway
=>Knowledge that is harmful to self and others e.g.
how to steal, black magic and how to produce drug.
MUSLIM MUST REFRAIN FROM IT AND SHOULD
NOT WASTE THEIR TIME AND RESOURCES ON IT.
There is knowledge which is inherently and intrinsically beneficial
and profitable, and there is also the type which is harmful and
blameworthy
INTERGRATION OF REVEALED KNOWLEDGE AND
ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge can be innate or
acquired. It can be aqli or naqli.
It can be knowledge of the seen
(ilm al-shahadat) or knowledge
of unseen (ilm al-ghaib)
Acquisition of knowledge can be
individually obligatory or
collectively obligatory
Reading is a key to knowledge as
revealed in the al-Quran (al-Alaq
1-5)
The main purpose of acquiring is
to bring us closer to Allah. It is
not simply for the gratification of
the mind or the sense.
Knowledge must be linked with
value and goals
Most crucial obligation is to
acquire knowledge and after that
to practice and preach this
knowledge.
INTEGRATED KNOWLEDGE
There is NO dichotomy between the religious
knowledge and the worldly knowledge
Both are geared towards atttaining Allahs pleasure and
developing an upright personality
Every form of knowledge is read and acquired NOT just
for the purpose of attaining material values, high
position in occupation BUT ALSO Higher order moral
goals and values.
All Muslim at all levels of education is required to learn
Shariah
Curriculum and syllibis should be integrated with
Shariah.
