 The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center, a project of the Center for Court Innovation,is seeking
Outreach Workers
for a new anti-gun violence program. The Center for CourtInnovation, founded as a public/private partnership with the Fund for the City of New York, is anon-profit think tank that helps aid victims, reduce crime and improve public confidenceOperating out of a storefront since the summer of 1998, the Mediation Center provides training,youth programs and resource links to community residents. Its mission is to strengthen thecommunity and prevent future conflicts by enhancing access to justice, promoting public safety, andencouraging communication and understanding. This Crown Heights based anti-gun violence program will be a replication of the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention’s evidence-based
CeaseFire: The Campaign to Stop the Shooting 
program, a cutting edge gun violence preventionmodel that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies. SkilledOutreach Workers are key to the success of this initiative. Outreach Workers will work individuallyand as a team to prevent neighborhood shootings and killings.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 
Conduct outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strongrelationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups.
 
Form relationships with the highest risk persons in the community, as well as the peoplewho know them.
 
Work to intervene in circumstances in which gun violence is likely, including possibleretaliation.
 
Keep the Crown Heights Outreach Supervisor informed of all community goings-on
 
Identify youth who are gang members and those at-risk for joining gangs and intervening intheir lives through case management to aid in solving current problems and preventingfuture ones
 
Provide clients with support and linkages to programs and opportunities in the community(e.g., job programs, GED, drug treatment, and mentoring)
 
Participate, as necessary, in organizing responses to shootings and increasing visibilitywhen shootings/killings take place
 
Research causes of shootings/killings to assist in mediating situations and preventingretaliation between individuals and groups (e.g., working with the community, outreach programs and local law enforcement to gain information that may be helpful in preventingadditional killings)
 
Work with community partners to identify and diffuse “hot spots” for shootings andviolence (e.g., conducting eyeball surveys with residents and community basedorganizations to identify areas frequented by potential offenders)
