CDP Additions for Cisco IOS

CDP Additions for Cisco IOS
Feature Summary
TheCiscoDiscoveryProtocol(CDP)isamedia-independentdevicediscoveryprotocolthatrunsonall Cisco manufactured equipment, including routers, bridges, access servers, and switches. CDPVersion-2 is the most recent release of the protocol and provides more intelligent device trackingfeatures.ThisfeaturemoduledescribesthefollowingadditionstoCDPthatprovideCDPVersion-2functionality:
New error messages sent to the console (and, optionally, to a logging server on another server). The messages provide coverage for instances of unmatching native VLAN IDs (IEEE 802.1Q)on connecting ports, and unmatching port duplex states between connecting devices.

commands.Eachdevicesendsperiodicmessagestoamulticastaddressandlistenstotheperiodicmessagessentby others in order to learn about neighboring devices and determine when their interfaces to themedia go up or down. Each device advertises at least one address at which it can receive SNMPmessages. The advertisements contain holdtime, information, which indicates the period of time areceiving device should hold CDP information from a neighbor before discarding it.WithCDP,networkmanagementapplicationscanlearnthedevicetypeandtheSNMPagentaddressof neighboring devices. This process enables applications to send SNMP queries to neighboringdevices.

Release 12.0(3)T
Benefits
A reporting mechanism saving time for tracking errors that create costly downtime for thefollowing:
Unmatching duplex states between devices
Unmatching (IEEE 802.1Q) native VLAN IDs between connecting ports
Expanded commands providing detailed output on VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)managementdomainandduplexmodesofneighbordevices,CDP-relatedcounters,andVLANIDs of connecting ports
List of Terms
advertisement
—An updated information packet sent periodically by the CDP process.
holdtime
—Theamountoftime, inseconds, thereceivingdeviceshouldholdaCDPadvertisementfrom a neighbor before discarding it.
neighbor
—A remote system, connected to the subject system on one or more of its interfaces.
Type Length Value (TLV)
—A piece of information in a CDP advertisement.
VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)
—A discovery technique deployed by switches where eachswitchadvertisesitsmanagementdomainonitstrunkports, itsconfigurationrevisionnumber, andits known VLANs and their specific parameters. A VTP domain is made up of one or moreinterconnecteddevicesthatsharethesameVTPdomainname.Aswitchcanbeconfiguredtobeinonly one VTP domain.

Supported MIBs and RFCs
This feature supports the CISCO CDP-MIB.
Functional Description
New Type Length Values
Type Length Values (TLVs) are blocks of information embedded in CDP advertisements. Table 1summarizes existing TLVs.
Table1Existing TLV Descriptions
CDP can now advertise new features, using the following new TLVs:
VTP management domain TLV. This TLV is used by network operators to verify VTP domainconfiguration in adjacent network nodes.
NativeVLANTLV.ThisTLVisusedbyCDPtoindicate,perinterface,theassumedVLANforuntaggedpacketsontheinterface.CDPlearnsthenativeVLANforaninterface.Thisfeatureisimplemented only for devices that support the IEEE 802.1Q protocol.
Full/halfduplexTLV.ThisTLVisusedbynetworkoperatorstodiagnoseconnectivityproblemsbetween adjacent network elements.
New Error Messages Sent to the Console
CDP sends error messages to the console (and, optionally, to a logging server on another system)during operation. CDP now sends error messages that detail:
Unmatching duplex states between devices
Unmatching IEEE 802.1Q VLAN IDs on connecting ports
TLVDenition
Device-IDIdenties the device name in the form of a character string.Address TLVContains a list of network addresses of both receiving andtransmitting devices.Port-IDIdenties the port on which the CDP packet is sent.CapabilitiesDescribes the devices functional capability in the form of adevice type, for example, a switch.VersionContains information about the software release version onwhich the device is running.PlatformDescribes the hardware platform name of the device, forexample, Cisco 4500.IP Network PrexContains a list of network prexes to which the sendingdevice can forward IP packets. This information is in theform of the interface protocol and port number, for example,Eth 1/0.
