HISTORY OF ST. GREGORY THE GREAT
St. Gregory the Great High School is named after Pope St. Gregorythe Great who was born in Rome around 540 and served much of hisearly life in civil office. Around age 30 he retired from public duties, joined the Benedictine Order and formed several monasteries on his ownproperties. After several years, he was ordained to the priesthood andmoved back into public life, but this time working for God. He wasconsecrated the 64
th
pope, and ruled for 14 years. During his reign,Gregory pushed for reforms and evangelization. He removed unworthypriests from parishes, forbade taking money for certain services, andspent much of the papal treasury to ransom prisoners of the Lombards, care for persecuted Jews and aid the sick and dying. Pushing for theconversion of England, Gregory sent more than 40 monks from hismonastery to evangelize there. These monks, who included St. Augustineof Canterbury, were successful in converting much of Anglo-SaxonEngland. Gregory, the patron saint of music, died March 12, 604 and isconsidered one of the four great doctors of the church. Tradition says hecoined the phrase that says the pope is the “servant of the servants of God."
