Spiritual gifts, according to some Christian denominations, are gifts that arebestowed on Christians, each having his or her own proper gift (or gifts) tostrengthen the church. The term "spiritual gifts" comes from the Greek wordscharismata (gifts) and pneumatika (spirits). They are the plural forms ofcharisma, meaning "expression of grace," and pneumatikon meaning "expression ofSpirit." They are described in the New Testament, primarily in First Corinthians12:4-11; 28-31, 1 Peter 4:10, Romans 12:1; 6-8, and Ephesians 4:7-13 . Somegroups, including several conservative mainline Christian denominations, believecertain gifts, particularly tongues and prophecy, were limited to earlyChristianity, a view known as cessationism. Other groups, including Pentecostaland other Holiness denominations of Christianity, take an opposing view(continuationism), believing that the spiritual gifts are still given by the HolySpirit today. In 1 Corinthians 12, we learn that spiritual gifts are given toGod's people by the Holy Spirit for "the common good." Verse 11 says the gifts aregiven according to God's sovereign will ("as he determines"). Ephesians 4:12 tellsus these gifts are given to prepare God's people for service and for building upthe body of Christ. While there are different kinds of gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4),generally speaking, spiritual gifts are God-given graces (special abilities, offices, or manifestations) meant for works of service, to benefit and build upthe body of Christ as a whole. Although there is a great deal of disagreement overspiritual gifts among different denominations, most Bible scholars classify thesegifts into three categories: ministry gifts, manifestation gifts, and motivationalgifts. The ministry gifts serve to reveal the plan of God. They are characteristicof a full-time office or calling, rather than a gift that can function in andthrough any believer. The ministry gifts can be seen a the five fingers of onehand: Apostle - An apostle establishes and builds churches; he's a church planter. An apostle may function in many or all of the ministry gifts. He is the "thumb,"the strongest of all of the fingers, able to touch every finger. There were twelveoriginal apostles and while the actions of such might be replicated, the originaloffices of these were unique. Just as the twelve Elders or twelve tribes namedfrom these leaders were a one time event. Prophet - Prophet in the Greek means to"forth tell" in the sense of speaking for another. A prophet functions as God'smouth piece, speaking forth God's Word. The prophet is the "index finger," orpointer finger. He points to the future and points out sin. Evangelist - Anevangelist is called to be a witness for Jesus Christ. He works for the localchurch to bring people into the body of Christ where they can be taught Christiandiscipleship. He will evangelize through preaching, writing, and/or other creativeways. He is the "middle finger," the tallest one who stands out in the crowd.Evangelists draw a lot of attention, but they are called to serve the local body.Pastor - The pastor is the shepherd of the people. A true shepherd lays down hislife for the sheep. The pastor is the "ring finger." He is married to the church;called to stay, oversee, nurture and guide. Teacher - The teacher and the pastorare often a shared office, but not always. The teacher lays the foundation and isconcerned with detail and accuracy. He delights in research to validate truth. Theteacher is the "pinky finger." Though seemingly small and insignificant, he isdesigned specifically for digging into tight, dark places, shinning light andpicking apart the Word of truth. The manifestation gifts serve to reveal the powerof God. These gifts are supernatural or spiritual in nature. They can be furthersubdivided into three groups: utterance, power, and revelation. Utterance - Thesegifts say something: Prophecy - This is the "forth telling" of the inspired Wordof God primarily to the church, for the purpose of confirming the written Word andbuilding up the entire body. The message is usually one of edification, exhortation or consolation, although it can declare God's will in a particularcircumstance, and in some cases, predict future events. Speaking in Tongues - Thisis a supernatural utterance in an unlearned language which is interpreted so thatthe entire body will be edified. Tongues is a sign to unbelievers. Interpretationof Tongues - This is a supernatural interpretation of a message in tongues, translated into the known language so that the hearers (the entire body) will be

In the Scriptures, baptism in Jesus' name is a necessary part of the plan of salvation! Peter told the crowds, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins."
