President’s Message
___________________________________________
Aloha!
Hard to believe that we’re electing a new Board, meaning this year is very closeto its end. I’ll reserve the ‘What a year it’s been!’ comments until next month as thatwill be the real end of the term.We had another great month since the last NewsDragon, including the swearingin of 2 new members at last GMM, both of them named Patrick! Please welcome
Patrick Graham
&
Patrick Taw
to the great family we know as the HonoluluChinese Jaycees. I hope they get as much out of their membership as I have frommine. The month’s big projects were, first, the now annual
HCJ Halloween Party
, held at Sum’s Auto Center.
KenSum
did another fantastic job as host and emcee for the evening. Ken led the crowd in both a Costume Contest aswell as the traditional Pie Eating Contest. It was a great time for all!
Miss Chinatown Pageant
The 2
nd
Big Project during this time was HCJ’s return to the
Miss Chinatown Pageant
! HCJ vets
Paul Chun
,
Gordon Goo
&
Bob Musgrove
were back in their accustomed places running the stage and lights.
Lindley Low
wasin his accustomed place as well – with the grindz (where else?).I’d like to thank the rest of the crew who came out and re-established a chapter tradition:
John Cummings,Krystal Lee, Steven Antonio, Isaac Sato, Ken Sum
and
Ross Lee
.It was an eventful evening that culminated in the crowning of not 1, but 2 Queens. You can read about it all onPage 3. I’ll end by just saying it’s a joy and a privilege for the chapter to be back with the Pageant.
HCJ Christmas Party!
Remember – there’s still the customary
HCJ Christmas Party
still to happen! It’s Saturday, December 5
th
@Golden Palace Restaurant. We’ll have games, prizes and more once again. We had a blast last year together and we’replanning on having another one this year! Details on Page 6.There’s no GMM in December, but we will be having our final HCJ Birthday Bash @ Farrell’s for all of youSeptember to December babies. We’ve got some ice cream coming your way if you’re one of them. And there’salways room at the table for people who just like to join in the fun. We’ll see you soon!Your Friend,
Jonathan Cook

Miss Chinatown!
On Monday, November 2
nd
, it was Official – HCJ was back on the jobwith the
Miss Chinatown Pageant
! It seemed like old times at HawaiiTheatre with
Paul Chun
once again in the Stage Manager seat and
Lindley Low
doing Food duty.
Ross Lee
has done a great job this past year escorting the 2009Miss Chinatown Court to events around town, but this was our chapter
sreturn to full involvement. Our members started showing up early in theafternoon to help out with rehearsals and blocking out of the stage forthe ladies
performances.Led by Miss Chinatown coordinators
Renee Leong
&
Stephanie Ching
, the team was able to get thearrangements down and planned out for the show later that evening. Lindley &
Isaac Sato
were given thehonor of standing in for the ladies so the spotlights could be tested out. Both men proved that, given thechance, they knew how to work a stage.HCJ Veterans
Gordon Goo
&
Bob Musgrove
ran the lights for the evening, taking their customaryplaces in the room at the very top of Hawaii Theatre. Their experienced hands were, as always, a largeingredient in the success of this year
s Pageant. At 6PM the Hawaii Theatre doors were opened to the public. Supporters, friends and family of thecontestants staked out their places in the audience and prepared to cheer on their favorite. The panel of judges, which included past HCJ member, and former Miss Chinatown USA,
Sylvia Shim Werny
, joinedthem soon after.Shortly after 6:30PM Paul called for the curtain, Steven raised it and the Pageant was on! Theproceedings kicked off with the introduction of the contestants, followed by the Q & A. Emcee
JenniferHong
handled this time with grace and confidence, just as she did during the rest of the night. The talent section is always a favorite, giving each contestant atime to truly shine. This year
s show included a Chinese RibbonDance, a Chinese Fan Dance and Ballet. It was truly a diversecollection, allowing each lady to truly stand out during her spot. The end of the evening, though, is the time when the tallies arefinalized and the, literally, crowning moment comes. This year wasa little different because
2 titles
were bestowed. They were:
Leilani Soon, Miss Hawaii Chinese
– She will represent Hawaii inSan Francisco for the Miss Chinatown USA Pageant.
Janelle Wong, Miss Chinatown Hawaii
– She will compete in the Miss Hawaii Pageant. It was a great evening with a great team and a fulfilling return for HCJ. Here
s to many more years tocome! Congratulations to all the ladies!
