Lieutenant Governor to launch art exhibition
and book marking First World War centenary

Toronto, June 18, 2014. The Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario is commemorating
the 100th anniversary of the First World War through the power of art.

On Thursday, J une 19, the Hon. David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will launch
Lest We Forget, an exhibition of original artworks by leading contemporary artist
Charles Pachter. The exhibition will be on display for at least a year.

Mr. Pachter explores varying aspects of warincluding the heroic, mundane, and horrific
through a mix of compelling paintings, each taking the form of a stark meditation. In creating
these works, 16 in all, the artist spent upwards of a year undertaking visual research and
reading letters written by Canadian soldiers serving during the Great War.

Accompanying the paintings, which hang on the first floor of the Lieutenant Governors Suite at
Queens Park, is a commemorative book featuring a series of essays focused on the question:
What have we learned from war? Contributors include retired general Romo Dallaire,
Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, the Rt. Hon. J ean Chrtien, novelist J oseph Boyden, and Professor
Margaret MacMillan. Sally Goddard, essayist and mother of the late Capt. Nichola Goddard,
will deliver remarks during the exhibition launch.

Members of the public are invited to view Lest We Forget in person and acquire the free
booklet on selected days during tours of the Legislative Assembly at Queens Park. Tour
information, as well as an online version of the exhibition and essays will be posted on the
Lieutenant Governors website in due course.
