Animals seized
from Gleichen
property
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

On June 10 the Alberta SPCA removed

45 dogs and 20 cats from a foster home for
Oops-a-Dazy Rescue and Sanctuary Society
in Gleichen. The sanctuary does not have an
actual shelter at this point and relies on a
foster home system.
The animals were removed from the
property because our officer, and a veterinarian in attendance with our officer, determined that the animals were in distress and
needed to be removed, said Roland Lines,
communications manager for the Alberta
SPCA.
In general terms Lines explained that distressed could mean sick, injured, malnourished or dehydrated. He would not comment specifically about the animals seized
from Oops-a-Dazy and their condition.
When animals are taken the owners have
a 10-day period to comply with the requirements suggested by the SPCA.
They have an opportunity to claim them
back if they want to. At a minimum they
are required to pay for any veterinary care
or boarding costs that we incur while the
animals are in our custody, so thats at minimum, said Lines.
In addition to that, obviously we are not
going to be returning animals to the same
situation that we thought they needed to
be removed from and it is very dependent
on the particular circumstances. We would
have conditions that an owner would have
to meet before we would return animals to
them.
If the owner(s) does not reclaim the animals because they either choose not to or
they dont meet the conditions the animals
become the property of the SPCA.
Then it is up to us to make a determination whether they be acceptable for adoption into new homes and so we would make
that determination after the point in which
an owner does not reclaim them, said Lines.
Christine Campbell, chairperson with the
Oops-a-Dazy board of directors said the intention of the rescue group is to apply to
have the animals returned, but to have the
animals distributed to other foster homes.

Upgrades for local

animal shelter
Continued from Page 1

The board has decided to not place any more animals into
this foster home for the time being. We will complete the
upgrades, and then reassess what additional processes and
controls can be put in place. For instance, we will likely be
installing video surveillance to prevent unauthorized dropoff of animals, which was a significant factor in this situation, said Campbell.
The animals were very well cared for, but the number of
animals had become unmanageable. Although we had suspended animal intake a couple of months ago, animals continued to be left on the property. Our pleas for foster homes
were not answered quickly enough.
Campbell said that prior to the SPCAs involvement the
sanctuary had initiated a number of steps to make improvements to this foster home and to the foster home program
in general.
Those included installation of additional fencing to separate dogs into smaller groups, an active search for more foster homes, and suspension of animal intake. We were also in
the process of reviewing our foster home program and looking for opportunities to make it even better, said Campbell.
We are seizing the opportunity to make significant upgrades at this foster home while there are no dogs or cats
to work around. We have already made a big dent in the to
do list and will continue to work very hard over the next
few weeks to complete the recommendations advised by the
Oops-a-Dazy Board of Directors as well as any recommendations made by the Alberta SPCA.

Composting given green light

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Colin Huxted, owner of H&H Huxted Enterprises, was
back before council on June 4 seeking approval to move
forward with his composting plan.
We talked to Alberta Environment, they are encouraging
us to do this, said Huxted.
There is a permit he would need to apply for, but until he
gained councils approval he would not be moving forward
with that part.
The idea is for Huxted to enter into a three-year plan, a
pilot program for composting, with the Town of Strathmore.
The facility would be considered a class two, meaning that
only vegetative matter, yard materials, garden waste, trees
and tree branches chipped would be decomposed through
a controlled bio-oxidation process. The finished material
would be 100 per cent organic and could be used safely
anywhere.
The site is located on a section of the towns property
south of the recycle yard and is approximately two and a
half acres. The goal is to create the class two site, and from
there evolve it into a class one site which would allow food

products and waste water sludge to be added.

Huxted said he will hire someone who can monitor the
program and answer questions that council may have as
things go along. He and Bruce Hempel, Huxteds operations
manager, will also continue to go to courses and keep up
to date on composting and learning about new ideas and
trends.
What I am donating for three years here is my labour, my
equipment, my knowledge and Bruces knowledge. After
the three years if the pilot program works then we will sit
down and talk and if youre happy with it, well continue,
said Huxted.
As a council we have a lot of hopes for the composting
project in terms of developing potential to hold moisture
and stormwater and all of those kinds of things, said Councillor Denise Peterson.
Peterson made a motion to approve the proposal in principal, pending licensing and permits. Council approved the
motion. Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford also
mentioned that it was interesting to him that back in the
day a former councillor had been pushing for composting,
and how approximately 15 years later it is finally going to
happen.

Seniors Advisory Committee.

TOWN OF

STRATHMORE

First Phase of Downtown

Revitalization Progressing
The Town of Strathmore will be starting with our first initiative for the
Downtown Revitalization within the next few weeks. The initiative will
consist of the placement of two portable islands in strategic locations
along Second Avenue.
Portable Islands such as the one shown above, can be placed in parking
spaces, as an extension to the sidewalk, and can be relocated from time
to time. These conversational pieces encourage people to relax in the
downtown area and to feel a sense of belonging. They can include plants
and flowers for aesthetics, and seating for practicality and enjoyment.

The Mandate of the Committee is:

To enhance access to Town Services for seniors, the elderly,
and their families.
To identify and suggest solutions to gaps and barriers that impede
the full participation of seniors and the elderly in all aspects of life
within the Town of Strathmore.

The Town of Strathmore is now seeking Eight (8)

members of the public to sit on this committee.
Members will be appointed by Town Council
for a 2 year term.

YOUR WEEKLY

Passing the buck or harsh reality

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Transportation Minister Wayne Drysdale stopped through Strathmore and
Wheatland County on June 11, on one
leg of his whirlwind tour of southern
Alberta communities. He said he wanted to get a visual image of some of the
paperwork that crosses his desk daily.
Minister Drysdale has offered to
share some time with us and we have
the opportunity to express some of
the needs we feel are necessary to our
councils and some of the villages in the
area, said Strathmore Mayor Ell.
He toured the Strathmore hospital,
and then met with Strathmore town
council, Wheatland County council and
hospital administrators in a round table
discussion to get a sense of community
needs.
Some guys are all mouth and no
ears, said Drysdale. I prefer to listen.
And listen he did to healthcare issues like over-use of Handi-Bus services, patient transport and movement in
evening hours, hospital renovation and
parking shortage, insufficient diagnostic machinery and funding for failing
building structures, and upgrades to
existing infrastructure.
Some of the councillors expressed
their frustration with the current system of provincial bureaucracy and
one left the meeting after Drysdale responded that municipalities are given
money from the province and it was up
to them on how they spend it. Drysdale indicated he also must deal with
requests that come to the department
from other government levels like Alberta Health Services, and then it is up
to his department to see if they can be
built. His staff likened him to the childrens character Bob the Builder. Other
ministries and levels of government request the projectand he builds it.
You have got to quit downloading
these decisions on to other departments, said Strathmore Councillor Bob
Sobol.
Sobol qualified on Facebook that since
this hospital opened the population of
Strathmore and District has increased
fivefold. He said we are woefully short
of diagnostics, X-ray equipment, and
emergency care beds. Our seniors have
to travel to Calgary (on Handi-Bus) for
specialized blood work that should
be done here in Strathmore. Doctors

and patients are frustrated - they have

been promised improvements and help
many times over the years. Sobol said
he is very frustrated with the inaction.
Strathmore Councillor John Rempel
agreed projects have been in the works
for this area since 1985, and promises
have been made and nothing material
has been done.
There are lots of requests, needs and
wants and there is never enough money for them, but we will try to work
together and partner, then hopefully
we can make something happen, said
Drysdale.
Drysdale said he is allocated a $19.2
billion budget and he gets requests
from every municipality in the province, everyone stating their projects are
a priority. He did say in an interview
with the press that allocations in the
past had been given to projects centered on recreation, culture and art initiatives; he said those projects do have
their purpose, but the many requests
regarding aging building structures
and infrastructure may require a refocus on funding for ground floor necessities. He said that his department will
be taking some of the Building Canada
money delivered to the provinces and
diverting some of those funds to necessary projects in the province.
In an interview with the press, Drysdale did say he felt his department
could respond rather quickly to the
short-term goal of reorganizing the existing space in the Strathmore hospital.
AHS staff said that moving diagnostic,
pharmacy and overflow beds into the
unused wing, with expansion of the
ER, could be accomplished in two to
five years for about $2 million.
I looked at it (the hospital wing) and
it is fairly sound. It would be a shame
to leave it as it is, said Drysdale.
There has been some tangible evidence of his departments efforts in
areas of road building and bridge reinforcement. The Hwy 21/ Hwy 1 corner access has been slated for widening and $5 billion is targeted to expand
and repair provincial highways. The
new 511 road report www.511.alberta.
ca allows Albertans to see where road
work is occurring, as well as get road
advisories. Bridges are being inspected
for damages especially in areas flooded
last year and Drysdale said those municipalities with bridges will see some
more money to fix those structures. The

Arrowood Bridge has an end-of-June

opening date posted on the 511 site.
As for infrastructure projects like water and wastewater facilities, promises
were not as concrete. He said he will
be working with Environment and Sustainable Resources and Development
(ESRD) and the other provincial work
groups and passing on the message of
this areas need for water and sewer
infrastructure improvements to appropriate avenues, as well as lobbying the
treasury department for more money.
A representative for the Wheatland
Regional Water Partnership handed
Drysdale a letter requesting a release
of money to upgrade the hub water
treatment services in Standard, and fix
the treatment plants for Gleichen and
Rockyford, outlining the degraded levels they are in and advising they will not
be in compliance with water standards
if work is not done. The Gleichen plant
doesnt fit the 2006 provincial guidelines and has had boil water warnings
in the past year. The Rockyford plant
doesnt fit 1997 provincial standards;
with its operational license expiring in
2015, it is imperative to get the funding
to do the work now.
Drysdale said the department typically starts looking at their budget priorities for the upcoming year in August
and he would be putting the information they have gathered on this factfinding trip to good use in that process.

good oral hygiene. If you havent flossed in

good suggestion. Keep a package of floss next

and floss at the same time.
Poor-fitting shoes can play havoc with your
feet. Bunions are caused by shoes that are
too tight. Women suffer the majority of foot
problems that also include hammertoes and
neuromas (thickened, painful nerves in the
forefoot making walking difficult).
The
solution? Wider shoes. Not as fashionable but
your feet will thank you.

LED lighting is making its way into all areas of the world,
from household light bulbs to taillights to streetlights. Werner Fischer, a member of the towns planning and development department, spoke to council on June 4 about having
LED lighting installed into new community streetlights.
A pilot project in 2011 by AUMA saw Innisfail, Stony Plain
and Okotoks test out the new lighting. Innisfail will not be
pursuing the initiative, mainly because they would have to
retrofit their existing streetlights, which will become quite
costly.
Advantages to using LED lighting are the energy savings,
which is key, durability and longevity, and reduction of light
pollution and glare.
Fischer said the pilot study in Okotoks indicated that there
was a potential of up to 27 per cent in energy savings, given
that an LED consumes about 67 per cent of the power that a
conventional high pressure sodium bulb would.
FortisAlberta provided the town with information that did
state that there would be an energy savings of about 36 per
cent if LED street lights were use.
Last year we estimate that the town paid approximately
$55,000 for street lighting. Had those streetlights been LED
there would have been a savings of almost $20,000, said
Fischer.
The key drawback to it at this point were to retrofitting
in existing areas is much more expensive than adding LED
lighting in new subdivisions.
The technology is still fairly new, and the efficiency is expected to improve and capital costs are likely to decrease.
Currently the cost to install a streetlight is $3,000. The
difference to install an LED light is an additional $500, but
retrofitting the existing lights to accommodate LED lighting
would cost $750 to $1,000 per light.
Fischer said that staff believes that requiring LED lighting
in new subdivisions is a reasonable approach to improving
energy efficiency.
It is recognized that retrofitting is more expensive and Fortis will not replace individual luminaries without replacing
all of them in a given area. The recommendation is was for
council to support LED lighting in the new subdivisions. The
recommendation was accepted and moved.

Wheatland County utility rates are set to rise
10 per cent on flat and metered rates as of July 1.
Cluny wastewater flat rate will be set at $27.95 bimonthly and the Capital Utility levy will increase
in hamlets to $22 per billing period. The costs are
based on operating costs and costs for new infrastructure needed. The breakdown can be seen
on the county website www.wheatlandcounty.ca

GOLF TOURNEY FOR COUNTY STAFF APPROVED
Wheatland County staff requested a $5,000 increase in
their special event money to hold a corporate golf tournament on June 10. The premise is those who golf together
work well together.
The county aspires to create coherence between work
and time off, as well as give colleagues in the various departments a chance to better get to know one another, promoting team spirit and improved cooperation across department lines, stated Parkin.
The staff currently have a $15,000 budget, which goes to
mixers such as wing night, the Christmas party and a company BBQ. There are often appreciation gifts given out at
the events.
Parkin said that staff has considered combining the yearly
BBQ with the golf tournament, which he said would improve turnout for both events. He said the gifts are sponsor
donations and cost the county nothing.
Some councillors supported the move and others felt they
should work within the current budget.
It is an appreciation for what staff is doing all year long.
They spend a lot of time doing work that we dont see or
hear anything about, said Councillor Ben Armstrong. It is a
good time to tell them they are doing a good job.
Council approved the increase with two councillors opposed.
EFFLUENT SPILL
Councillors were concerned that new development in
Rosebud may need to be put on hold, when they heard that
the current sewage system was spilling effluent.
We dealt with it right away and reported it to Alberta
Environment, said General Manager of Transportation and
Infrastructure Dave Churchill.
Crews kept up with the problem by pumping effluent into
trucks and hauling it to the Drumheller treatment plant.
Churchill said the sewage field system is past its time and
is now at its capacity. He said one of the problems is the soil
is saturated with water from recent rains. He said if money
for a new system comes available, the county should look at
land higher up, if they can get the cooperation of the current landowner.
Developers have voiced an interest in establishing a partnership to fund a new sewage system, as it would ensure
good septic services for potential home owners. Churchill
said another option would be to utilize reserve funding until
grant money was made available for the project.
PEDAL TO THE METAL
A transportation study conducted along Range Road 264
and Hwy 1 to Hwy 564 near Lyalta has shown motorists
consistently travel at 100 km per hour; even in zones posted
at 80 and 30 km. The area has ball diamonds, a childrens
play area, school bus drop-offs and mailbox access activity
noted in the report. There were some visibility issues on
the roadways, such as shrubbery and power poles affecting
viewpoints. There was a recommendation that additional
signs be posted to make motorists aware of pedestrian activity and adjust the speed limit signs from 80 km to 90 km
on main areas approaching the community, consistent with
other roadways in the province. A 50 km sign would be
posted just prior to entering the community boundaries and
30 km signage would remain around the playground zone.
There would be some repaving and a turnout for the mailbox area. Shrubbery would be cut back and realignment of
the power pole at a future date would be researched.
Council approved the actions recommended in the report
with one councillor opposed.
This is a bylaw officers dream come true, said Councillor Don Vander Velde. We would be better off to have one
speed for the main road and one for the playground.

Coles Travel hosts appreciation night

For the last 15 years Coles Travel has held a customer appreciation night in
June with a supper prepared by the Elks Club of Strathmore. Not only do
they appreciate their customers but they also encourage involvement in the
community. On Thursday, June 5 they collected just over 100lbs in groceries
for the local food bank as well as cash donations. They also auctioned off
the rest of the BBQ beef to local vet Miguel Moncayo for $300 to donate to
Breast Cancer research. One of the owners, Carly Cole, who came on board
with her mother seven years ago says, We know how important it is to give
back to the community and Strathmore always does it in style. Carly Cole

Train days
To the Editor
On Fathers Day Weekend, the great staff at Aspen
Crossing made a special effort, with miniature train
rides including all the bells, whistles and noises in
their parking lot.
Large garden-scale (G-Scale) model trains that run,
toot, ring, and just plain amaze the kids, not to mention the kids within the adults. Each year, their displays and activities grow.
Aspen Crossing also presented a humdinger of a
breakfast honoring Dads that is cooked from scratch
by staff and volunteers, an incredible brunch in the
1887 Pullman dining car (reservations are necessary
or youll be on the outside, looking in wishing!).
But dont forget Mom there is an incredible green-

house full of flowers too.

In our family, Fathers Day at Aspen Crossing has
now become tradition, with our boys and friends also
joining us. The real enjoyment of being here comes
from watching the kids eyes absolutely light up at
all the train action riding them or watching them
operate in one of the greenhouses.
What a hearty and memorable weekend for everyone. Do yourself and your family a favor spend

The great crashes

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
My tools are a real mess (insert laughter). Those
who know me know this is funny because if I did
have them totally organized, I dont even know how
to use half of them! Heck, Im not even sure of the
names for some of them! I made the mistake of telling my teacher pals about this purchase, and that
was met with much laughter and heckling!
They really wondered what the point was, in me
even bothering to get my tools in one place. One
teacher even admitted his own lack of handyman
ability. He said, the only tools I need are a crescent
wrench, vice grips, a multi-screwdriver, and duct
tape! I can fix anything with those four things, and
they dont take up a lot of room to store!
So, I did finally buy a tool chest, but my father-inlaw called after to let me know hed found a slightly
used one that a friend of his was selling. So, I arranged to have the new one (still in its crate) returned. I put out an all call e-mail to my staff for
help loading it onto my truck. Before the help arrived, I thought Id drag the box closer to the big
doors, so itd be easier to load. I thought the wrapping straps would be strong enough to achieve this.
They were not. I grabbed on, and slowly pulled
with most of weight (dont say it)! Suddenly, the
whole loop of strap slid right off the crate, and I
was sent flying backward! I had no chance to slow
or stop this, and wound up flat on my butt! I had no
choice but to sit there and laugh, wondering if my
neighbours had seen the whole show! There had
been no way to protect myself from landing right
on my butt in full view of the street and neighbours!
It got me thinking about bike riding, and how the
new laws regarding helmets for kids are more safe
than back in the 70s. If you were a kid in the 70s,
and dared to wear a helmet on a bike, Im pretty
sure youd have been mocked regularly. In fact, it
never even occurred to us that helmets would make
sense. Wed ride to the top of Hospital Hill in Canmore, point our Mustang bikes with the sissy bars
and gearshifts down the hill, and fly! One of my

friends, Joey, hit a camper on the way to school.

In fact, his handlebar and arm went through the
camper window. His front forks bent, and he had to
limp to school, leaving the mortally wounded bike
behind. Scraped and bruised, he got to school late,
only to be given a DT for the being so tardy! I always wondered why seeing a scraped and damaged
kid limp in the school doors, would not be evidence
enough that maybe Joey had a good reason for being late! The bad part was that Joey had a stutter,
which worsened when he was nervous or mad, and
he was both! Swearing with a stutter at the supervising teacher is not a good strategy in defending
yourself he got extra DTs!
If we could have worn helmets without being sissies, Joey would have been the best candidate. He
seemed to have more bike crashes around Canmore
than any of us, he was a real Evil Knievel, even
when he wasnt trying! One Summer day on Main
Street, Joey had one of his worst crashes. The guys
were racing each other doing what most teenaged
guys do, attacking each other! On the spur of the
moment, they created a Lord of the Flies game
on bikes. Theyd race each other all right, but the
whole time, the object of the game was to try and
kick the other guys front tire! It worked really well
against Joey Brian had timed his boot perfectly, as he raced alongside Joey. Joeys front tire was
kicked just right, and the tire went completely sideways. When youre racing bikes and your front tire
suddenly does go sideways, Physics enters. While
the bike came to a sudden, awkward stop, Joeys
body kept moving forward fast over the handlebars!
He was a bit husky, and he didnt fly far, but like the
Wright Brothers, he had achieved flight. Joeys landing was not smooth or painless. He lay there while
the odd car passed and honked. Then his swearing started. It wasnt pretty hearing the language he
used, and sadly, with his stutter, it sometimes took
us awhile to figure out which word he was using
next. This would have been a time where a 70s kid
could have used a helmet no wonder they added
the law!

Detachment Commander, Strathmore RCMP

As the Detachment Commander and a member
of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police I wanted
to say thank you to the community of Strathmore and area citizens who recently have gone
out of their way to express their appreciation for
the RCMP members in Strathmore Detachment
and police officers in general across our country.
In my 24 years as a member of the RCMP, I
have never seen such gracious and kind gestures
from the general public and people we swear to
protect as police officers, as I have in the last
week or so. All thanking the police for their service and duty to Serve and Protect.
There have been many gestures in the past
week and a half that have included numerous
flowers, five mini candle lights and potted plants
being placed at the base of the Canadian Flag
pole outside the Strathmore Detachment. Flowers dropped off at the front counter, numerous
cards, letters and even one card with a drawing
by a young child of two police officers in Red
Serge, saluting the Canadian Flag at half mast,
while holding flowers and crying with their heads
bowed (attached). On the top of the page is written R.I.P. - Cst. David Ross, Cst. Fabrice Georges
Gevaudan and Cst. Douglas James Larche
In the last week and a half, since the tragedy
in Moncton, N.B. many people in Strathmore and
across the country have expressed their gratitude
and appreciation for police officers and first responders in many ways. Many of these flowers,
letters, cards have been dropped off with the
people remaining anonymous and not wanting
to be recognized.
One citizen had just got out of hospital and
was recovering, but came to the Strathmore Detachment and dropped off a card saying, from
one grateful member of this community of Strathmore that you do your jobs so well. I am proud to
be a Canadian and have the best police force in
the world helping ensure my safety. Thank-you

and God Bless.

I have personally had 15-20 individuals of the
public come up to me in the past week or so
and says, thank you for what you do and shake
my hand. I know many, if not all, our officers
in Strathmore have experienced this in the past
week and a half.
I wanted to make sure I thanked those people,
many who wanted to remain anonymous, that
have expressed their thanks and condolences for
our members the past week and a half. It is something I have never experienced in my career with
the RCMP, and it has been very touching. I am
getting a little choked up just writing this letter,
while reading (for the third or fourth time) all
the cards and letters we have received in the last
week or so.
I know that most people in our communities
appreciate and recognize what police officers,
first responders and their families go through every day and shift they work. But the outpouring
of personal thanks and appreciation from the citizens of Strathmore area and across the country
is very touching.
As a senior member of the RCMP, one thing I
made sure I mentioned to the junior police officers I worked with in the past was to advise
them that if they wanted or needed thanks for
the job they do they shouldnt be a police officer.
Generally it is a thankless job. I am glad to say
that after 24 years I have been proven wrong. It
is an honour to be a member of the RCMP, and to
work with such brave, strong, caring members of
the RCMP who put their community and the citizens they serve ahead of themselves on a regular
basis.
Thanks you to all those citizens who said
thanks to our police officers in Strathmore and
across the country. Thanks you to all our citizens
who support the police and first responders (Fire
Departments and Ambulance Service personnel)
who regularly put themselves in harms way to
keep our communities safe and help our citizens
in their time of need.

Each year Strathmore High School
(SHS) awards one student with the
Strathmore Times Class Act award. The
student doesnt have to have top marks
to receive the award, they just need to
be a classy, quality student.
This year Carter Jones was the student recognized with the Strathmore
Times Class Act award.
She is a class act kind of kid, she
excelled at a number of areas and shes
certainly never in the office for the
wrong reasons and she certainly represents the school and the community
in a lot of different capacities and she
just does it in a first class kind of fashion, said SHS Associate Principal Kyle
Larson.
She is just a fabulous young lady
who really came into her own in her
Grade 12 year. She became a real leader.
Jones has be en heavily involved in
sports since coming to SHS. She has
played on the rugby team, the volleyball team, basketball team, competed in
track and field and cross-country running.
Jones said that sports provide a sort
of relief. She doesnt like sitting idle,
and keeping busy and active has been
a great way to fill her time.
Her basketball coach Dion Galandy
was the one who spoke of Jones before
the award was presented.
I was kind of shocked because he
has never really opened up like that, it
was really humbling when he started
crying especially, said Jones.
It made it that much more special
because he has always been tough on
us, and to just see him open up like
that (was special).
Jones will be attending Mount Royal
University for nursing where she hopes
to be involved in intramurals, and said
she may try and sign up for their basketball team.

Rewarded for agriculture knowledge

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Eight students from Strathmore High
School (SHS) were awarded for their
knowledge of the agriculture industry
after participating in the Green Certificate program.
The program is an industry-driven
training program offered to students
that provides them with the option of
learning about a variety of agriculture
related topics through structured learning as part of the senior high program.
It is available for students in Grades 1012, and upon completion, the student
gets 17 credits towards the 100 needed
to graduate.
The students who take part in the
program usually have a background in
agriculture, and so they are taking the
knowledge they already know and have
grown up with and are applying that to
the program.
Thats the neat thing is I get to say to
kids, we can reward you for the knowledge you have just by virtue of doing
your chores everyday, said Karen Harris, a counselor and teacher at the SHS.
It encourages kids first of all to know
about safety, especially agricultural safety, making sure they are safe on the farm
or the ranch or wherever, and then there
are very specific areas of study that focus in on their area of specialization.
The Green Certificate program is completed at home and costs $1,008. Once
the student successfully completes the
program they get the money back. Upon
completion the students also have the
option of going to Australia on a farm
exchange, and will be able to list the
training to help them find future jobs in
agriculture.
There are nine categories students can
be tested on: cow/calf, feedlot, swine,
irrigated crop, field crop, dairy, sheep,
equine and beekeeping. At SHS no one
has taken the beekeeping, dairy or
swine programs to date.
This year, for the first time since the
program came to the school, two stu-

dents, Chancey Guichon and Jason

Wilson have completed two of the programs, both in cow/calf and feedlot.
I took cow/calf because thats what
me and my dad do together and I think
feedlots are an important part of our industry so I wanted to learn more about
them, said Guichon.
If there was knowledge I didnt already know then it might be nice to
learn about it. I think it is awesome and
people should take it if they are interested in it.
Wilson said he took part because it
was something that kept him busy.
It just to give more options to kids
that might not like options that were
given previous to them, said Wilson
about the program.
It was a good program, it was fairly
easy if you know what youre talking
about, said Braden Walker who also
took cow/calf.
I am glad it exists because it is an
easy way to get some credits and show
what you know.
Zane Dahl also took the cow/calf portion. He thought it was good, but also
easy because it is something that he
does on a regular basis.
Joel Chizmazia participated in field
crop, stating that it was pretty easy because he too already knew most of what
was discussed.
Dawn Carlson took the equine program. She has worked with horses her
whole life, and thought it was nice to be
acknowledged for the knowledge she
has.
I think it is good program, kids
dont get this option as an actual class,
said Carlson.
While the students may not have had
much to say, Harris was happy to see
each of them participate in the program.
She believes they will go on to be successful farmers and ranchers because
that is what they know and love.
Wace Pallesen and Denver Johnson
were missing the day of the interview,
but both also completed the cow/calf
section of the Green Certificate program.

Love Laugh Learn Equine Assisted
Learning Centre, owned by Jody Buckle, is bringing Equine Assisted Growth
and Learning Association (EAGALA) to
Strathmore on June 20.
Part one of the certification for the
EAGALA model, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted
Learning (EAL), will be taught June 2628.
EAP is a growing modality that
incorporates horses for emotional
growth and learning. Each session is
taught in collaboration with a mental
health professional and equine specialist. Participants will learn about
themselves and others by participating
in the activities and then processing
their thoughts, beliefs, behaviours and
patterns. Buckle is hosting EAGALA at
her facility because it is a model that
she believes in.
One of the differences between EAGALA and other programs is that it is
based on a team approach, based on a
code of ethics, said Buckle.
EAGALA is an internationally recognized association and is currently

practicing in 42 countries worldwide

because of its effectiveness in dealing
with trauma, addictions, depression,
eating disorders, and PTSD. We also
do corporate team building, leadership
and relationship issues.
Buckle herself is a certified equine
specialist with EAGALA, and said one
of the advantages to being certified is
that she can be called on by a mental health professional that practices
equine therapy because they know her
history with the program.
Another wonderful benefit to me
personally and to my company, is that
this model is recognized by the Mental
Health Association and brings with it
a level of professionalism and ethics
that you can trust and be proud of,
said Buckle.
There is still plenty of time to register for the certification. It is $600 per
level. Level 1 is taught June 26-28 and
Level 2 will be Sept. 18-20. People can
participate as a mental health professional or as an equine specialist. In
order to take the Level 2 certification,
participants need at least 6,000 hours
of time and training with horses to
qualify. For more information, or to
register go to www.eagala.org

Aggie Days returns

SHANNON LECLAIR

Aggie Days in Carseland is fast approaching, and once again the community would love to see people come out
and take part in the festivities.
Aggie Days is being held June 20- 22,
and this year promises to be as fun as
ever.
This year we added the cabaret to
make sure we cover something for everyone, so now kids and families can
have fun together on Friday with the DJ
dance and on Saturday night parents
can get out for some fun of their own,
said Jennifer Wiebe, who is doing PR
for the event.
The weekend starts with the ball tournament on June 20 at 5 p.m. There will
be a section for ball players to camp.
The tradeshow also opens at 5 p.m. and
the family DJ dance begins at 6 p.m. at
the Carseland Community Hall.
Saturday is a busy, yet fun-filled day

Local cowgirl
heads to
nationals
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Strathmore cowgirl Destiny Stevens,
14, is off to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the National Junior High Final
Rodeo June 22-28 for breakaway and
ribbon roping. There will be approximately 1,000 contestants coming from
five provinces, 42 states and Australia.
The NJHFR is the largest junior high rodeo, and in addition to competing for
$75,000 in prizes, contestants will also
be trying for a shot at a scholarship,
and the chance to be named the NJHFR
Champion.
This year marks the third consecutive
year that Stevens has qualified, having
placed in the top four in provincials.
Its kind of nerve wracking. In my
event that I am competing in there is
over 250 kids in it, said Stevens.
It is an elite group of kids, it is very
good rodeo because these kids are all
very good, said mom Crystal.
Stevens competes in barrels, poles,
break away, team roping, goat tying and
ribbon roping, but only qualified for the
two.
Im hoping I will do a little better
than the past two years. I have been
practicing quite a bit, said Stevens.
The past years were just kind of for
experience.
Coming from a family well into the
rodeo world, it was a natural progression for the youngest Stevens to get
involved. She has developed a passion
for her particular events and is excited
to continue to compete at such a high
level. She loves the competition and the
thrill of competing against friends, some

with her.
Along with the competition there
is also the chance for the participants
to get out and make new friends from
around the world. NHJFR contestants
will be able enjoy shooting sports, volleyball, tug-of-war, dances, church services and shopping.
You get to meet new people while
youre doing something else, not just rodeo, said Stevens, who also enjoys that
part of nationals.

Running for fun

The Brentwood run club invited the schools in and around town to
come and join them on Thursday, June 12. Brentwood was joined
by students from Westmount, Wheatland, Trinity and Carseland and
enjoyed a two km run for beginners or a four km run for those that
felt up for a challenge. The run club grows bigger every year and
promotes active and healthy living.

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
The 2014 South Central Zone Junior High
track and field competition was held at the
Foothills Athletic Park on June 3. Schools
from across the county competed, and the
weather held up perfectly for the day.
This division, Wheatland, was also responsible for hosting and organizing this years
event. There were volunteers from Crowther
Memorial, Holy Cross Collegiate, Standard
and Central Bow Valley schools that ensured
the event ran smoothly and was a success.
Crowther Memorial Junior High (CMJHS)
sent 81 athletes to zones this year.
Our school came out 12th overall (out of
66 participating schools) and sixth in our 4J
division. Not too bad at all. Our students had
a great time and did great in their events.
Our school keeps doing better every year
and our new track club should help our athletes continue to grow, even with the short
track season, said track coach and CMJHS

teacher Brad Huntley.

For the Grade 7 girls, Ijeoma Ojinnaka was
first in the 100 metre dash, and second in 80
metre hurdles. Rayanne Laycock was fourth
in the 3,000-metre dash. Grace Olson placed
fifth in the girls triple jump, and third in the
javelin throw. Tristen MacLean, competing
for the Grade 7 boys, took third in the 200
metre.
For Grade 8, Chelsey Nelson was third in
triple jump and Kate Laughland was fourth
in javelin. Zachary Hiscocks was third in
shot put, and Julien Hornsby-Irvine was fifth
in the discus throw.
In Grade 9, Jesika Ojinnaka took fifth for
the 100 metre dash, Matrina Vergouwn was
fifth in the 1,500 metre run, Kaylynn Glenn
for placed fifth for shot put and Addison
Muller took third for javelin.
For the boys, Levi Oostenbrink was third
in the 100-metre dash and first in long jump.
Connor Klassen was fifth for the 100 metre
hurdles and Dallas Wipf took fourth for shot
put.

Strathmore was the host foThe Bud Light Canadian Rockies

International Rodeo and Music festival is returning to Strathmore on the Canada Day weekend. This year marks 21 years for
the rodeo, and its sixth year in Strathmore.
With Strathmore the facilities are really great, there was lots of
room for growth and the town has been terrific. Merchants have
been great year in and year out, RCMP, the town council, everyone has been great, said Drew Davidson, communications director for the Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo Association (ARGRA).
The rodeo, which is informally known as a gay pride rodeo,
features all the great things from your typical rodeo, with a fun
twist on others.
The rodeo will run June 27-30, beginning with a rodeo school
during the day of the 27.
If anyone is wanting to give rodeo a try that is the best opportunity to get your feet wet, said Davidson.
For the rodeo school goat dressing is new this year, and there
will be lessons in steer riding, chute dogging, steer decorating
and calf roping on foot.
In a way it is kind of phenomenal because at first when it
comes to some of the events people are scared, but excited, and
then when they are trying it you see the exhilaration, you see
their faces and it is quite an exciting thing. A lot of the people
that join the rodeo school end up signing up the next day and
compete, said Davidson.
Some of the people in the rodeo school are also seasoned
veterans who want to brush up on their skills. Registration will
be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., orientation at 9 a.m. and the school
starts at 9:30 a.m. with calf roping on foot. The last event will be
goat dressing from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $25 per event,
and spots fill up fast, so Davidson recommends putting your
name in early by signing up online at www.argra.org. The deadline to register is June 23.
The rodeo itself and festivities will begin at 4:30 p.m. on June
27.
For the music festival we are having 18 artists playing throughout the weekend, starting at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Friday night is
the womens night so all of the acts are female, said Davidson.
Saturday is a mixed day of country, pop, theres some blues
with the Smoking Aces, and Sunday is more of our directly
country focus.
The rodeo and music festival are an all-inclusive event, and so
the nice thing about it is all of the events are on site, which is
different from the other rodeos in their circuit, said Davidson.
So if someone is camping they dont have to leave for the
entire weekend because we have food trucks, we have retail, we
have the rodeo, the dance, the music festival, so youre never
bored because there is always something different to look at.
On June 27, and the rodeo events officially kick off at 9:30
a.m. on June 28. The Wild Rose Riders equine drill team will
lead the grand entry both days.
Admission for Friday is $10 because it is a shorter day, and is
$20 for Saturday and Sunday.
The full schedule of events for both the music festival and the
rodeo can be found by going to the ARGRA website at www.
argra.org. Anyone who would like to volunteer can e-mail volunteers@argra.org or they can talk to someone at the info booth
on the grounds that day, and they will be redirected to the right
area.

THE EXAMPLE OF A LITTLE ANT

It was the tiniest ant I have ever seen. Just
a little black speck, at first glance. But then
I saw the leaf, easily 500X larger, moving
ever so slowly across the sidewalk ... I
knew it wasnt blowing along, by the way it
was moving, so I stopped to take a closer
look. And low and behold that little speck of
an ant was moving it, I am not sure where,
but to a place where the ants colony could
reap the nutrients and benefits of that large
leaf, for their collective well being. How
hard that little ant worked, to get that huge
cumbersome leaf to its goal! And I have to
say, I had to admire that little ants stamina
and diligence in moving it, step by step ...
centimeter by centimeter, to its goal.
And I found myself wondering as I watched
the progress, do I, do we as humans have
that same stamina and diligence, to do what
it will take, to move things around and to
make this world a better place, for all of us?
As I watched, it seemed as if each little
pebble or lump of dirt became like an obstacle for that little ant to overcome. And each
gust of wind seemed to work to hold the ant
from making progress. So much so, that I
had to wonder, if we were that ant, knowing
our general track record with obstacles and
challenges, wouldnt we just drop the leaf,
and carry on? But the little ant labored on,
into the grass, around the stem of one plant
and under the twig from a nearby tree. Until
it gradually disappeared amidst the green.
That little ants goal was to do something
to provide in some way that would make
a difference, for all the other little ants in
its community. What if we worked, even a
quarter as hard, as that little ant, to provide
for or make a difference in our community?
We could do it as teams. We could band together to move the negative or hard things
out of the way. We could join our hands and
our strength to lift things and carry them to
others, to help support and encourage each
one in our town or community. Rather than

tending to focus first on our own needs

or desires, we could look out to, and for
others, and realize that in supporting one
another, all of us are far better off, because
not only do we give, but we also receive.
We are so blessed to live in this community,
where all that we really need is available.
Where we have neighbors, and neighborhoods where we can walk safely, where we
can come together to meet our neighbors
and do things together, to make a difference. From schools building playgrounds,
to community members setting up play
nights for kids in the park ... from youth
programs to instill strong values and good
habits, to work places that offer to train and
equip young people ... from agencies and
churches to facilities and public programs
that aim to care for individuals of all ages
and backgrounds, we are blessed. But our
role, just like that of the little ant, is to each
commit and do what we can, to make it our
goal to care for and make a difference for
all in the community.
God did not create the world, so that people
would live in isolation, concerned only for
their own interests and desires. He created
all that we have, and each one of us, to be
both blessed, and be a blessing to others.
Ants get that. This summer, when you see
a little ant hauling a big load, in support of
its colony, consider what strengths, what
talents, what gifts you have been given by
God, to make a difference in your community. And think about a time when you have
needed a hand, or a smile, or have been
able to be a part of some community enhancement, and what a difference it made
in how you feel. May the little ant be a huge
reminder to all of us, this summer, of how
blessed we truly are to have this community
to live in, and may it encourage each of us
to work together for it, and in it ... AMEN
Summer blessings to all.

Venom host Canada Day tourney

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

For the first time Strathmore Minor Lacrosse
(SML) is the one of the hosts of this years Canada
Day tournament in Calgary. Every year two teams
from the Calgary District Lacrosse Association are
picked. The other host team is the Calgary Axemen.
Were just delighted. The level of lacrosse is
quite high, so it is very good exposure for kids to
play at a high level, said Todd Betterton, volunteer coordinator for the event.
This year marks the 38th year for the tournament, making it the longest running box tournament in North America. Teams have attended from
Australia, the Czech Republic and from across the
border in the U.S.
Strathmore will have six teams participating in
the tournament, four boys teams and two girls
teams ranging from novice to bantam.
Because Canada Day is on a Tuesday this year
the tournament will actually be running the weekend prior, June 27-30.
June 27 will kick off with a meet and greet,
team photos and a couple of exhibition games.
The tournament will officially begin on Saturday,
June 28 and the finals will happen on Monday,
June 30.
Its a fantastic tournament, we have to bring
our A game, because the level of competition is
quite high, but we get to meet a lot of other teams
and a lot of other people which is a lot of fun,
said Betterton.
The biggest benefit is the kids get exposed to
a really great event and experience, and they also
get to play really great lacrosse.
In addition to the players preparing for the

rs
olf Cou
g

game, the board must also now find volunteers

and sponsors. There is a need for 210 volunteers
to fill three hour spots each.
There are two large challenges that the host
clubs face. One is securing a volunteer base, so
I will be starting literally this month, June, as we
lead up to the Canada Day weekend I will be
sending out emails to folks asking for them to
volunteer for certain duties, said Betterton.
The other big challenge is of course getting
donations.
Betterton said the Canada Day tournament
helps the host clubs in terms of creating financial
stability long-term, and SML hopes to get a small
portion of the revenue that Canada Day generates to put back into the Strathmore club, which
will then help with the purchase of equipment
and jerseys, booking floor time and perhaps allow them to bring in some high-level coaching.
Strathmore is just delighted to be a part of this
and were really seeking community support from
our membership to come out and volunteer, and
even if you just love to volunteer and want to be
a part of it by all means drops me an e-mail, said
Betterton.
Volunteers will be needed to help with security,
running the 50/50, time-keeping, running supplies to teams and more. Contact Deb Betterton
at deb.betterton@telus.net about volunteering.
To donate for the door prizes or raffles items
contact Deanna Weis at deannaweis@icloud.com.
The tournament will be held at the Subway Soccer Centre in Calgary, and there will also be four
satellite locations. The times and locations can be
found at http://www.calgarylacrosse.com/Team/
teamWeb.dll/PageContent?ContentId=4461&Ses
sionId=55924250889750&co=1. All of the games
are free to attend.

PINCHBECK,

SOUTHERN,

May 25, 1940 - June 14, 2014

October 27, 1978 June 16, 2014

Mr. George Taylor Pinchbeck of Strathmore,

Alberta, passed away at the Strathmore Hospital on June 14, 2014 at the age of 74 years.
George was born in Edmonton in 1940, grew
up near Mayerthorpe and married Marianne
Denkhaus on August 21, 1964; this August
would have been their 50th anniversary. After
a one-year teacher training course, he began
teaching by the time he was eighteen, and
later went on to complete B.Ed and M.Ed. degrees at the University of Alberta. His career
in education took him to positions in Onoway,
Mayerthorpe, Sedgewick, Spirit River, County
of Wheatland, and Rockyview School Division,
where he taught and worked as vice-principal, principal, associate-superintendent and
he officially retired after seventeen years as a
school superintendent in 1995. In his retirement, he was school superintendent for Almadina (an ESL charter school in Calgary), and
was publicly elected as board member for the
Health Authority 5, and was then appointed
to the Calgary Health Authority. George was
a member of the Lions Club for 38 years, a
member of the Strathmore Aquatic Society,
was very involved in the Strathmore United
Church, sang in local choirs and active in the
Strathmore Golf Club. George was a very avid
reader of non-fiction and kept 2000+ books
within reach at the house. Friends and family could always count on George to identify
birds, bird calls, flowers and significant historical dates. The happiest times in his life were
being involved with his family, friends and his
precious grandsons; the latters various pursuits, including those in hockey and baseball,
brought him great joy. His love of travelling
took him to Europe, South America, Egypt,
South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand,
Mexico and many parts of the United States.
George is survived by his loving wife Marianne, children Geoff (Masayo) and Holly (Terry
Desserre), and grandchildren Scott and Mitchell. He is also survived by his sister Dawn
(Wayne Richmond), Ruth (Ted Soroka), brother
James (Marlene) and their families. George
will also be sorely missed by his in-laws; the
Shabadas, Nordlunds, Cooks, McHargs and
Denkhaus families. George was predeceased
by his mother Mabel, father Roy, brother Brian
and his sisters-in-law Hilda and Bonnie. Although George faced many health challenges
in the last year of his life, he enjoyed the
hundreds of visitors that came to see him at
the hospital in the last months. He remained
upbeat, positive and genuinely interested in
everyone elses life.
The family wishes to give special thanks to
Dr. Manocha and all the staff at the Strathmore Hospital and the Tom Baker Cancer
Clinic. A Memorial Service will be held on
Saturday June 21, 2014 at the Strathmore
United Church at 11:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the
Strathmore Lions Club (Box 2171 Strathmore,
T1P 1K2) to go towards their new project, the
Lions Family Walking Park or the Strathmore
Hospital Foundation (200 Brent Blvd. Strathmore, T1P 1J9) for new television sets. Flowers gratefully declined.
To send condolences, please visit Georges
