It’s a busy time on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council as the new County DevelopmentPlan is nalised. The new plan sets out the ground-rules or development in the County rom2010-2016. Last July the Green Party made a detailed submission with our proposals or howthe County can develop and prosper over the next ve years. We called or a new task orce torevitalise Dún Laoghaire town centre, the County’s rst ‘eco town’ at Cherrywood and improvedpublic transport with a coastal cycle-way and an extended Luas to Bray. The Green Party are alsocommitted to saeguarding green belts in the County and are insisting that lands at Clontra inShankill and Fernhill in Stepaside must be protected rom development.I’m glad to say that many o our recommendations are included in the Drat Plan. Recently theCounty Council also advertised or a ‘brand’ manager or the town o Dún Laoghaire and I’mhopeul that whoever is appointed to the new post will fy the fag or the County Town. There are some challenges ahead. There are suggestions that the HSS erry may be discontinuedat the end o the year, and Dundrum Shopping Centre is drawing shoppers away rom DúnLaoghaire. There are also proposals rom some Fine Gael councillors to rezone amenity landsbeside Fernhill Gardens in Sandyord or housing and to allow more out-o-town shopping onlands near Kilternan. Has nothing been learned rom the controversial re-zonings over the lastthirty years? I the councillors succeed in re-zoning more land the proposals will go on display inthe County Hall in Dún Laoghaire and you will be able to comment on the revised Plan. I’ll keepyou posted.
