Leader Guide 
This guide includes an overview of John the Baptist, songlyrics, and dialog that may be used to introduce the skit.
In the readings or the Sundays o Advent, John the Baptist guresprominently. He was the herald o the Messiah, as prophesied by Isaiah. He was “a voice o one crying out in the desert, ‘Prepare the way o the Lord,make straight his paths.’” (Matthew 3:3)Te Gospel o Matthew tells us that John dressed like a prophet in clothingmade o camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His ood wasgrasshoppers and wild honey. Te people o Jerusalem, o all Judea, and o the region around the Jordan were going to him to be baptized in the JordanRiver as they acknowledged their sins. John preached in the desert and said, “Repent, or the kingdom o heaven isat hand!” He was helping prepare the people or the coming o the Messiah,or whom they were waiting.onight, we’re going to put on a short play about John the Baptist. ogether, we’ll play the part o the crowd. I’ll tell you your lines and when to say them.But rst, we’re going to learn a song. Does everybody know the song “Frère Jacques”? Our song is sung to that tune.

 Ater the play, we’ll have one o John the Baptist’s avorite snacks,grasshoppers and honey!
[Use this line to cue the actor playing  John the Baptist to enter and/or walk to the ront o the room. Ten say:] 
Presenter:
Here comes John the Baptist now. All together now, let’sask him, “What should we do?”
Crowd:
 What should we do?
John:
I you have two coats, give one to someone who has none.
I you have ood, you should share that too.
TaxCollector:
eacher, I am a tax collector. What should I do?
John:
Don’t make people pay more than they owe.
Soldier:
 What about me? I am a soldier. What do I have to do?
John:
Don’t be a bully. Be satised with your pay. Stop orcingpeople to pay you money to make you leave them alone.
Presenter:
Everyone became excited and wondered i John wasthe promised Messiah. Now, let’s ask him, “Are you theMessiah?”
Crowd:
 Are you the Messiah?
John:
I am only baptizing with water; someone more powerul isgoing to come.
I am not good enough even to untie his sandals.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with re.
Presenter:
In many diferent ways, John preached the Good News tothe people. o celebrate John the Baptist, let’s all sing thesong we learned:
