The 42/44 RE is a four speed fully automatic trans-mission (Fig. 1) with an electronic governor. Firstthrough third gear ranges are provided by theclutches, bands, overrunning clutch, and planetarygear sets in the transmission. Fourth gear range isprovided by the overdrive unit that contains an over-drive clutch, direct clutch, planetary gear set, andoverrunning clutch. The overdrive clutch is applied infourth gear only. The direct clutch is applied in allranges except fourth gear. The 42/44 RE is equippedwith a lock-up clutch in the torque converter. Thetorque converter clutch is controlled by the Power-train Control Module (PCM). The torque converterclutch is hydraulically applied and is released whenfluid is vented from the hydraulic circuit by thetorque converter control (TCC) solenoid on the valvebody. The torque converter clutch engages in fourthgear, and in third gear when the O/D switch is OFF.Engagement occurs when the vehicle is cruising on alevel plane after the vehicle has warmed up. Thetorque converter clutch disengages when the acceler-ator is applied. The torque converter clutch featureincreases fuel economy and reduces the transmissionfluid temperature. The 42/44 RE transmission iscooled by an integral fluid cooler inside the radiator.
