Gynecomastia is enlargement of breast tissue in men. It ischaracterized by firm or rubbery mass extending concentricallyoutwards from the nipples. Up to 60% of boys have transientgynecomastia in the peri-pubertal age. However in a majority of them, symptoms disappear in a matter of few months/years.Gynecomastia is a cause of deep and complex shame, embarrassment and humiliation. One may avoid athleticactivities, gym classes, swimming or beach activities and mayresort to hiding abnormal body image with clothes. There are several medical problems that may causegynecomastia however, in most cases there is no known organiccause of breast tissue enlargement in men. The bulge can be dueto fatty or glandular excess. True gynecomastia will not usuallyimprove with diet and exercise. The surgical procedure for correction of Gynecomastiainvolves Liposuction ± gland excision. LIposuction can be doneeither under local or general anesthesia. This requires insertion of a small cannula (thin hollow tube), through 2-3 small incisions (3-5mm). The cannula is moved back and forth in a controlledmotion to loosen the excess fat, which is then removed from thebody by vacuum suction. If excess glandular tissue is the primarycause, the tissue may be resected by giving a small incision atthe junction of dark and light area of the nipple. The entireprocedure takes about 1½-2 hours and you can go back home thenext day.A drainage tube will be inserted to collect blood and fluid; and isusually removed the next day morning. You will be instructed towear a pressure garment to minimize swelling and bruising and toattain a good shape early. It is common to experience some painand tenderness for the first few weeks.
