Anointing of the Sick
Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of
the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our
Lords special presence and companionship in serious time of need.
Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere
and as often as once a month. If someone should die without
anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the
Lord cares!

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One
Please call us at 355.1292
If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will
assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors;
refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful
guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the
Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the
passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that
this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is
there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident
priest; sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH 3

REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG
PASTORS CORNER

Dear Parishioners,

Over 2000 years ago Jesus said:

Do this in memory of me.
And, well, here we are at Saint Rita Church, Sierra Madre, on the SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY
AND BLOOD OF THE LORD celebrating Mass together and still carrying out that command that echoes over two
millennia. One of the initiatives of our 2007 Parish Pastoral Plan is to preserve the centrality of the full celebration
of the Eucharist as vital to the identity of Roman Catholics. Isnt centrality of the Eucharist a no brainer? Why
the concern? Well, for one thing, in the years ahead, more parishes in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will be without
a resident priest as pastor. Even here at St. Rita, for ten years now, we have had Wednesday and Thursday communion
services in view of the fact that we had become a one-resident-priest parish. Many parishes in the world have no idea of
having Mass every day of the week. We have reason not to take such a grace and blessing for granted!

Just recently at our Town Hall Meeting, Mr. Tom McKernan, our Capital Campaign Chair, spoke of his own
commitment to the Campaign out of real personal conviction that parishes these days need to be very concerned
about our parish sustainability into the future. One reads very often about bishops in the United States having to
combine parishes and schools and even to close parishes and schools. While, so far, not a frequent experience here in
the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the reality is on the increase. Tom went on to point out that a vibrant and vital
parisha parish fully alive with a complete array of ministries and a healthy schoolis least likely to be on the
block. And I would add that this is precisely why our Campaign theme is Strengthening our Holy CommunionGrowing
in Faith, Hope, and Love. Our parish life and ministry here at St. Rita leads to Holy Eucharist (celebration of the Mass),
and our parish life and ministry flows from it.

No doubt about it. Pastoral administration and the role of the ordained priest has been evolving. Here at St. Rita, I
have been blessed with administrative assistance since our centennial year 2008; first Sheila Palazzolo; then, Tim
Lopez; and now, our Director of Pastoral Administration, Mary Lou Butler. It makes sense when you think about it:
why put all of the administration part of parish life in the job description of a priest, when he was probably not
trained or educated to do that job anyway? Fewer priests though we are these days, we are better off focusing on the
sacramental lifethe Eucharist at the Center Lifeof the parish and, thereby, allow the Baptismal call of the laity
to come into its own.
This is my Body, this is my Blood, given for you.
No matter where the Spirit is leading the Church today, one thing is for sure: whoever makes this proclamation of
Jesus his or her own, and keeps Eucharist at the center of daily life, will be a much more effective disciplewill be a
more generous and caring person, and much more fit to serve as a member of His Body, the Church. The Church, at
the same time, will continue, to DO THIS in memory of Him. After all, this is His plan and it cannot fail!
Msgr. Richard

Not by bread alone does one live,
but by every word that comes forth
from the mouth of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 8:3b
AMEN

Take a look around the walls of our church. The word
Amen has resounded off these walls countless times at the
conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer and as the faithful
have come forward to receive the Body and Blood of
Christ. Todays feast is about those Amens offered in
faith, offered in times of trouble or doubt, spoken in joy,
spoken mindlessly, but all given to God in a multitude of
ways. It is our very lives that lie behind our Amens and
are touched by the presence of Christ, the presence we
celebrate today. More importantly, we celebrate the love
of Christ for us shown in the sacrifice on Calvary and that
he continues to give to us in every celebration of the
Eucharist. What can we do but rejoice in that great love,
and then go out into the world and live that love in
sacrificing for others?

Safeguard the Children

Did You Know? Tips for Summer Camp
Safety. School is out and a whole host of new
opportunities for recreation and relaxation
await. Maybe you are sending your children to
a music or sports camp? Or maybe they have been
invited by their friends to go camping in the mountains?
Whatever the situation, it is important to remember that
parents still have the responsibility of controlling access
that new people will have to their children. If your
children are attending a summer camp, insist that
counselors, or anyone else who will have access to your
children, have undergone an application process that
includes a criminal background check and reference
checks. For particular help, please call the Archdioceses
Victims Assistance Ministry.

Two Special Feast Days

This SundayThe Feast of the Most Holy
Body and Blood of Christ, also known as
Corpus Christi. This Sunday we celebrate
the renewal of our life around the table of
the Eucharist. This feast reminds us that
Pentecost is all about life lived in the
Spirits embrace in relationship to the Body of Christ,
which is found both on the table and at the table.

This Friday, June 27The Feast of the
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Come to me, all you that labor and are
burdened, and I will give you rest, says
the Lord. Mt. 11, 28
As the Father has loved me, so have I
loved you; remain in my love.

Would you like to join us?

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to
be part of a Catholic community. Being a registered
parishioner is a requirement for infant baptism, school
registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or
confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. Additionally, if
you are not registered, a yearly tax receipt cannot be
issued since you have no unique ID number in our
database.

St. Francis Center in downtown L.A. We need
helpers:
After each weekend Mass (about 15 minutes) to help
move the donations from the Church to a secure

And, after the noon Mass to help sort the donations
(about 30 minutes).

Additionally, we may call you to help stuff bulletins; resupply
the offering envelopes in the pews; set up or clean up for an
event; help with a Food Drive; help with Hospitality on
Sundays; or similar activities.

We will contact you when we need helpand, dont worry, if
youre not available when we ask, well ask again for another
date/time.

A very happy bonus of giving your time is that you meet and
