2 0 1 4 Letter to the Readers. From the Editor, Richard Johnson Dear Readers: For a long time I've worried about the future of journalism. Newsrooms just aren't what they were just a few years ago. Once they were the boisterous domain of dozens of colorful copy-editors, writers, photographers and "paste-up" folks, laughing, cussing, shouting, chain- smoking (way back in the day) and constantly battling deadlines while producing the best possible product. Those places are much too quiet now; many of the great old personalities have departed, due to budget cutbacks, layoffs, and retirements. It's just not the same. There is hope, of course. There's always hope. It's right here, in the form of FitnessDigest.us - the brainchild of publisher Mark Miller, a former co- worker in one of those rowdy old newsrooms. Isn't this something? My new boss has achieved his dream of publishing an online digest. And it's extra-special: astonishingly sharp, focused, and relevant, highlighting all sorts of athletes and outdoorsfolk, well-known and obscure, whose stories will make you laugh, cry, think, and dream. I think FitnessDigest has come far after just a few issues. And I'm so proud of Mark, my old friend and colleague, who continues to hone the product, making each issue better than the last. This is truly a happening thing, in my not-so-humble opinion. It's the Age of Online, and Mark and his staff are making the most of it. In a word: "Wow." But enough about us. Let's talk about you: What do you think about us? But seriously, folks. Please send us your thoughts, story ideas, and ideas for making FitnessDigest even better. The possibilities are endless. It's great to be with you. An honor and a joy. There's so much fun to be had. Let's grow and learn together. Whaddya say? Isn't this something? - Richard J. I cant thank the supporters and top subscribers enough. Its a fabulous collection of important health news, industry headlines, and great sports stories from some of the most well-known sports personalities in the USA! Every issue is becoming a must-read for sports fans and industry professionals. Im hearing some incredible things about what our team is doing. Each issue highlights such amazing writers and athletes. Its our mission to strengthen the legacies that these writers and athletes are creating. This issue features an exclusive interview with top LPGA golfer Angela Stanford. Christel Hall did her magic again and conducted an interview that will be sure to captivate readers. Read about the Angela Stanford Foundation and the future of golf in the Olympics. This issue also welcomes more members to the FitnessDigest.us team! Tanya Beyer, a former student of mine at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, Iowa, designed the pages for the Stanford story. Tanya is professional to work with and her design is one-of-a-kind, intelligent, and beautiful to look at. I love it when good design becomes part of the story, and Tayna has done this with the Stanford interview. FitnessDigest.us also was recently approved to publish news directly from the US Olympic Committee. It was our third try at getting on the media list for the USOC. Finally, Im able to tell readers they can look forward to important news from the Olympic front. This, along with the U.S. Track and Field newsroom, will allow us to publish the most important stories right from the source. Im confident our readers will find this news enlightening. Another exclusive story in this issue is from Cory Weaver of Chicago. He tells the story of a YMCA in Iowa which is using new fitness equipment to help young Special Olympians. Its amazing to read about their efforts to keep the athletes healthy and active. Special Olympics is always a passionate subject for those involved with the organization. Thanks to Cory for his ongoing support. We are happy to be working with some great businesses too. This issue includes business partners from the Flyover Omnium Race Series, a five-race cycling event with over $30,000 in total prizes. Last years champion, Lee Bumgarner, was interviewed in FitnessDigest.us Vol. 5.3. If you missed that interview the issue is available on Scribd.com and MagCloud.com. Read about the Angela Stanford Foundation and the future of golf in the Olympics. Tweet From the Publisher Thanks also to Fox River Mills in Osage, Iowa, for working with us on FoxSox for Soldiers. We are still promoting the wish list for soldiers who want to sign-up for the program. It's featured on CoopNet.biz under the Race to Give Back campaign. Ive also been putting in extra hours to re-format the issue into a true digest size. We are now using standard digest measurements from MagCloud.com. It was fun to see FitnessDigest.us evolve into a true digest this way. When we picked the name, we thankfully decided against using the word "Magazine" in the title, and decided on the word Digest. Looking back, it was the right choice. The magazine is a collection of stories, titled as a digest - and we're now formatting this way as well! It all makes perfect sense. It is this progression that's important to us. Some more items of interest: You all know about the buzz surrounding social media these days. Its a fact that social media has become an important part of publishing. FitnessDigest.us is taking an objective approach to social publishing. The team has decided to add some more social- share features in this issue, but we are careful to keep it from being a distraction. Most of the pull-quotes now have Twitter Share links, just like many webpages have. The strategy we are using will allow readers to share an interesting quote without closing the magazine on their computer. It will be easy to return to the story after a social interaction this way. This has become another important reason to deliver an individual copy to each subscriber. The duplication of each subscribers issue is also important to strengthening the legacies of the athletes we feature. Unlike a webpage, a subscribers copy of FitnessDigest.us lives in their private library. Its fun to wonder how many hard drives now contain a complete issue of FitnessDigest.us. The world may never know. FitnessDigest.us will continue to feature USATF and beneficial programs from SwimOutlet. If your organization wants to be featured, communication directors can email Richard Johnson at fd.editor@ymail.com Pull quotes now have Twitter Share links and there is a new digest format. Tweet From the Publisher SwimOutlet.com Feature Column: Just A Mom Reminder of TIME by Jen Schmitt of http://www.justamomgivingitatri.com Today has been a day to remember and remind me of the value of time! Sometimes in our busy lives we forget just to take time to breathe and enjoy each other. There is so much to do in a day: breakfast, chores, laundry, swim lessons, groceries, lunch, more laundry, dishes, preschool, more laundry, cleaning, chores, pick kids up from preschool, and on and on. Sometimes life gets so crazy. I can't think of the last time that I took the time to truly sit down and play with my girls. You would think that ,being a stay-at- home mom, I would get those opportunities often, but when I do I have to truly make myself "SHUT DOWN." Too many times I sit down in the toy room to play with the girls and instead of playing I end up cleaning the toy room up, etc. Today I found myself thinking about this more and more as I learned of a friend who delivered her rst-born at 22 weeks and later snuggled her as she made her journey to Heaven. Then there was the thought of our family friend, Kathy, speaking today to honor Jon Tumilsons legacy at our local high school, and later in the day my niece, Morgan, was playing in the state semi-nal volleyball game as a high school senior. All of these things reminded me of just how fast time ies and that we need to savor every minute - or even millisecond! I am sure you have heard the following somewhere in life, but I found a copy of it on the Internet and thought I would include it! Ironically, I used this in my high school graduation speech almost 13 years ago... "To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade. To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby. To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet. To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the train. To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an accident. To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who won a silver medal in the Olympics. "Treasure every moment that you have, and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time. "Remember that time waits for no one. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift, that's why it's called the present! "Snuggle your babies tight, hug your loved ones and tell them you love them! "Do you nd yourself so rushed that you forget to breathe? What do you do to help yourself 'unwind'? All of these things reminded me of just how fast time ies Tweet Team USA morning session quotes from Day 2 of World Indoors USATF.org. 3/8/2014 Chris Carter, Mens triple jump qualifying Im happy to get into the nals and keep our legacy going and try to medal. Weve been doing that since 2011 and I want to keep that up. I need to do a better job during warm-ups. I didnt want to get too tired doing too many approaches, so I left my marks where they were but if I can get on a roll, I can adjust. I didnt need to jump that far today, so tomorrow I have todays round under my belt and I wont need to worry about not knowing how itll go. Omo Osaghae, Mens 60mH heats Felt really good. It was obviously a very early morning for us, so you want to just get through the rst round and get a good qualication time, work on the technical aspect of your race. It felt good to get off of the practice, sitting, sitting, practice routine and nally get on the track and do something. I feel good. Dominic Berger, Mens 60mH heats I executed my race plan. Weve been here all week. Ive been sitting in my room just itching to get out here. I got out here and executed. It was good to get my rst race under my belt. I felt great today. This track is awesome. Just happy to get the rst race out of the way. Michelle Carter, Womens shot put qualifying My plan is always to be one and done. I wanted to get my throw and come back to prepare for tonight. It should be a great show tonight. There are a lot of strong women in the nal and Im ready. Jeneva McCall, Womens shot put qualifying Its a milestone. Its the rst world nals in the shot put for me. A lot of people think Im exclusively but Im showing I can be a shot putter too. The main thing is getting adjusted to the ring because for spinners, its hard. They have to get adjusted is rough and its built for a glider. Rehearsing in my mind, I have to be either faster or more patient. I have the speed, I have the power but my leg is not getting through. Thats something I need to get back to the hotel and work on. Tianna Bartoletta, Womens 60m heats It felt really good. I love this track. I love the bounce you get from it. Its really crucial to get those rst race nerves out of the way at a big championship like this. I wanted to get a good run in so I could look at some video tonight, make some minor adjustments and execute the same way tomorrow but faster. In terms of Istanbul, I think comparison is my worst enemy right now. I have a new coach and Im just trying to look forward and improve from where I am right now. Champions Im happy to get into the nals and keep our legacy going... Tweet Lakeisha Lawson, Womens 60m heats It felt good. I wasnt that focused at the start because the hold was really long and it took me out of it a bit. Tomorrow, I need to stay more focused in the beginning. So once I started, I felt good and I felt uid. I think Im ready for the semi. Clayton Parros, Mens 4x4 heats (1st leg) I was happy to nally get to run. Ive seen everyone else compete and prepare coming up to today. Got out there and I felt like I wanted to get out there faster and win the break. Its tough in lane 6. You cant see anyone out there. Coming around the last 100, I knew I could catch Jamaica but I wasnt expecting the move from Poland. So I was a little surprised. But I knew Id get these guys in good position, so I did what I had to do and handed off the stick. It was a great experience. This is my rst senior team. Im looking forward to more of these in the future. Ricky Babineaux, Mens 4x4 heats (2nd leg) Coming from a well-experienced team like Texas A&M, it helps a lot. Youre competing on a big stage and a lot of these guys, Ive competed against at NCAAs and to come together means a lot. Its an amazing feeling to represent your country. The experience was awesome. Knowing youre in the race, youre still relaxing. Yes, theres someone in front of you but youre not losing the race for 400 meters. You just sit and wait. I put myself in the second lane to force myself to do what Im supposed to do. I have good foot speed so coming into the home straights, I knew I could pressure (Jamaica). Just running smart and being patient. Kind Butler III, Mens 4x4 heats (3rd leg) The indoor 4x4 is kind of like a game of chess. Its all about strategy. So I let the Jamaicans get in front because, honestly, Im still learning how to run an indoor 400. So I stayed behind him until it was time to make my move. At that point, I just tried to move as fast as possible. I want to break the world record, so hopefully we can do that tomorrow. Calvin Smith, Mens 4x4 heats (4th leg) Kind did a good job to put a space between us in rst. So I gured if he did that work to get us ahead, I could put a little more. The team in second, if they really wanted to get us, theyd have to do a lot of work to catch us. That was my game plan. The only advice I gave these guys was to understand what to expect and what not to do. I was on the team two years ago that almost got DQd, so I just made sure it wasnt going to happen again so we can get to gold. The indoor 4x4 is kind of like a game of chess. Tweet Champions Erik Kynard, Mens high jump qualifying The track is really fast so I tried to adjust as the competition went on. Now I know I dont have to work as much (on speed). Feels good to qualify for my rst World Indoors nal and now I need to get back, get some rest and focus on tomorrow. Dusty Jonas, Mens high jump qualifying Im obviously really disappointed with my performance today. Were all using the same surface so I cant make excuses but I really expected better. Ive changed my approach recently and Im still getting used to it. Im looking forward to outdoors and improving on that and seeing where that takes me. Tori Polk, Womens long jump qualifying Its been a blessing to be here, and to make our team says a lot. The ladies that competed out there today are spectacular. It was a strong group of jumpers. Im happy to have made the nal. I need to adjust a little to the speed of the track. I felt a little at. But Ill be ready and I feel so blessed to have made the nal. Tori Bowie, Womens long jump qualifying First time making a World team, my experience here has been good. I just need to go back and get myself ready and focused for outdoors. Natasha Hastings, Womens 4x4 heats (1st leg) I felt pretty good. Led off the team. I wanted to get out front, run a clean race and get a good start for us. Jernail Hayes, Womens 4x4 heats (2nd leg) Its always exhilarating to put on this USA uniform. Run strong, run hard and bring it in. Cassandra Tate, Womens 4x4 heats (3rd leg) It feels good to put the uniform on and run with these ladies. Natasha and Monica have been doing this for years. Im having fun and Im so happy to be here. Monica Hargrove, Womens 4x4 heats (4th leg) This is a great crowd and we were able to feed off them too. We did what we needed to do. Natasha had a great start for us and it helped us stay out front. Were all really proud to represent Team USA and ready for tomorrow. Champions It feels good to put the uniform on and run with the ladies. Tweet New Digest Format! Social Share Built In! I am in better shape physically and mentally. A constant 30 minutes swim is a perfect workout for someone who is always busy. I do not miss having to juggle my schedule and family around to accommodate swimming at a cold and sometimes noisy pool. Neither do I miss the chlorine smell or turning at the end of a lap. You really have me spoiled!" ~ Susan B., Jonesboro, Arkansas "I am a medical doctor. You should emphasize the special health benets of swimming in an Endless Pool: swimming uses the largest number of muscles than any other exercise, the force of the current can be set at any steady level, and swimming causes no trauma to joints, tendons, or bones. The Endless Pool's ability to provide a consistent workout cannot be overemphasized." ~ Doug F., Baltimore, MD "It is a great way to relax. Get in the current and let it work its way down from your neck to your toes. I had both knees replaced so the Endless Pool is an important part of therapy for me." ~ Teresa S., Dover, AR "I have had Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome for the past 10 years. The Endless Pool has been a large part of my physical therapy and one of the few forms of exercise I can tolerate." ~ Jocelyn K., Athens, Georgia "I had a stroke and couldn't use the right side of my body. I was advised that water therapy would be the best therapy for my continued rehabilitation. My therapist worked out several exercises that I could do in the pool. I have progressed far enough that I'm playing golf. My increased energy level is because of the pool exercises." ~ Gary W., Onekama. s wi mmi n g s h o r t s Nose Clips! Walt never swam anywhere, anytime without his reliable nose clips. He made nals in his rst National Championships. Standing on the blocks for the 400 IM nal he proceeded to place his clips on his nose, just prior to the Take Your Marks command. His nose clip broke in half and poor Walt had the worse swim of his career. Problems at the Pool As the story goes, Andrew was a great 8 and under swimmer. One day Andrews mom got a phone call from the swimming coach and he explained that he was having trouble with Andrew and would like to meet with her before the next practice. So prior to practice Andrews mom said to the coach, What seems to be the problem with Andy? The coach responded with, Well Andys been peeing in the pool! Naturally mom came to Andys defense saying, Well every eight year old at one time or another has an accident and pees in the pool! The coach responded with, Yes but from the three-meter diving board? (NO, ITS JUST A JOKE!) Goggles Swimming fans can really appreciate a 200 IM when their goggles ll with water. How about an Olympian? Swimming a leg of the 400 Free Relay with his goggles across his opened mouth and going :45s. A great team swimmer, an Olympian wouldnt let down his teammates by throwing them off or xing them. 500 Fly A world class butteryer, asked if he could swim buttery in the 500 yard freestyle during a dual meet. His goal was to break ve minutes. After considering the competition, it seemed like a great way to make him really work a hard y swim so we agreed. Problem was he swam a 5:02 and the opposing coach complained to the ofcials because he embarrassed his swimmers. Oh well, you cant win em all. s wi mmi n g s h o r t s Postcards to keep in touch with swimming and triathlon buddies. http://gamesgimmickschallenges.com Winning Spirit By Bob Steele, The Winning Spirit http://www.prowrite-pr.com 01000110 01101001 01110100 01101110 01100101 01110011 01110011 01000100 01101001 01100111 01100101 01110011 01110100 00101110 01110101 01110011 Im Binary. Myself and another runner, Jessica were talking about kids. Jessica is older then my wife and I. She is married; they have no children. My wife and I have a boy who is just now getting involved in sports. We are starting to feel the pressure of going to out-of- town events. Jessica and I were complaining about the time and energy it takes to truck the kids around to sporting events sometimes six or seven hours of driving, often for just a few minutes of competition. We wondered if it was worth the effort. Another mom was listening as we spoke. I noticed her becoming a little melancholy. I knew her kids were grown up and attending college. She said, Today is the day my son won a state championship in basketball, and I realize now that that moment changed our lives forever. She told me later that she misses trucking the kids around. If you read the sign, it leads you to believe the water is dirty. I spend a lot of time in and around pools teaching children to swim. We had talked about the sign before the practice began. I guess she wasnt feeling well that day. She sneezed a sickly sneeze, right in my face, and said, Im afraid the pool water is full of germs! Tweet USA Track and Field Celebrates the rst ultimate fan experience USATF.org 3/14/2014 When Janet Wagner walked into the Albuquerque Convention Center Friday, Feb. 21, she thought she was just accompanying her son for packet pick-up at USA Indoor Championships. To her surprise, a spur of the moment decision ultimately presented her with a dream of a lifetime. Wagner decided to register USA Track & Field Rewards, a USATF program that allows fans around the world to connect, compete and be rewarded for interacting with the USATF brand and partners across multiple media platforms. As fans accumulate wings for interacting with USATF, they unlock new levels of rewards and start earning wings immediately upon joining the program. We had gone back to the hotel that Friday, and cell phone rang, said Wagner. I didnt answer because I didnt recognize the number. Once I realized it was from Indianapolis, I called right back thinking it might be the USATF National Ofce. The call Wagner received was indeed from a USATF representative, and that staff member was calling to congratulate her on winning the ultimate two-day, track & eld fan experience at USA Indoors. On the rst day of her ultimate fan experience, Wagner had the opportunity to select USATF gear, view the opening of USA Indoors from the NBC Sports production truck, watch her son compete in the 35-lb weight throw and watch the entire meet trackside on a raised platform next to coaching and track & eld legends. Wagner, a masters thrower, also met four-time Olympian, discus athlete Aretha Thurmond. It was a thrill to be able to see a female thrower of that caliber in person, said the ultimate fan as Thurmond went the extra mile to introduce Wagner to two-time Olympic silver medalist Doc Patton, pole vaulter Jenn Suhr, the legendary John Carlos and Dan OBrien among others. As fans accumulate wings for interacting with USATF, they unlock new levels of rewards and start earning wings immediately upon joining the program. When Omo won, I was so thrilled that I couldnt believe it, she said. I went over to him and I gave him a big hug. Tweet Sporting News On her second day of the ultimate fan experience, Wagner met USATF CEO Max Siegel, and had the chance to win more gear if she correctly predicted the winner of mens 60-meter hurdles nal. Wagner selected Omo Osaghae and watched the race unfold from the long jump runway. When Omo won, I was so thrilled that I couldnt believe it, she said. I went over to him and I gave him a big hug. Sometimes, its important to take a chance. I did and it really paid off. As a track & eld fan, this is interesting to me. Our sport is so wonderful that I felt like I was talking to fellow athletes, fellow participants in track & eld. Talking to Doc Patton and Aretha Thurmond, it was like I was talking with friends. I think that's what our sport is all about. Its about being a part of the family. Wagner has since become a USATF Rewards regular, comparing the excitement of interaction to thrill of using social media. You want to go back and get more points and earn more wings. I havent even looked at prizes yet, but I just want to move up to that next level. Its basically just a lot of fun. For more information or to register, visitrewards.usatf.org. As I set her on the deck she exclaimed, Im getting cold! I was forming a strategy to keep her goggles on. I needed to stop her from taking her goggles off so that she would stay in the water and thus be warmer. I told her, Keep your goggles on. They'll keep you warmer! You know the old saying "It's not if, it's when you fall when on your road bike with your feet clipped in?" Well, if you don't have a road bike, you may have never heard it, anyway. Tonight I was in a nearby town leading my Weight Watchers meeting, and mentioned to my husband if I got home in time I'd like to take my bike for a spin, because my knee had really been bothering me the last few rides and I was thinking I needed to make some adjustments to my seat. Being the awesome husband that he is, he took the girls to the lake and brought all necessary biking equipment, including my bike shorts, to the lake so I could meet them! I quickly changed in the van and jumped on for a lap around the lake, just to see how it felt. The girls were screaming for me to stop and say hi, so I pulled up by them and visited for a moment. We made a slight adjustment to my seat to see if that would help with the knee issues. I jumped back on and was talking to the girls, clipped in while still standing there and ... Timmmberrrr!... You guessed it! I tipped over standing still while visiting with my husband and children, onto a paved bike path. I seriously thought I broke my wrist. The girls ran over to me and were worried. Rob just kind of looked at me like, "What the heck just happened?" I felt like it was happening in slow motion. The dumb thing is, a few weeks ago I did a similar thing when pulling up to a step. Just went to put my foot down and slowly tipped over. Must engage brain before trying to get off of bike! :) Thankfully, I only have minor scrapes on my knee and elbow. But my pride is bruised! :) Especially because, each lap after that, the family that was shing nearby stared at me, wondering if I had had a seizure or something. :) Has this ever happened to you? Tweet Palliative Care Bills, Right Step for Patients Legislation Aligned with Associations New Stroke Palliative Care Recommendations. March 27, 2014 Washington, D.C., March 27, 2014 The American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association announced its support today for legislation aimed at improving palliative care services for patients with serious illness. A scientic statement in the associations Stroke journal, also published today, reinforces these efforts and describes for the rst time the fundamental palliative care needs of stroke survivors and their families. Effective palliative care requires a highly-customizable patient- and family- centered approach that allows individuals to focus on quality of life by anticipating, preventing and treating suffering associated with their illness. Even though stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in adults, the majority of stroke patients do not receive the palliative care services they desperately want and need, American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown said. This new paper lays out strong scientic evidence in support of palliative care to complement stroke treatment, enhance quality of life and alleviate burdens placed on family caregivers. We are encouraged that legislation has been introduced that closely aligns with these recommendations and supports funding for the research and training necessary to help healthcare professionals accomplish this goal. The Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act introduced by Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., and Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., would establish education centers and support career development in palliative medicine. The Patient Centered Quality Care for Life Act introduced by Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II, D-Mo., and Rep. Spencer Bachus, R- Ala., would expand palliative care- focused research, create a workforce training initiative, and establish a stakeholder summit to address patient- centered care, among other measures. Patients recovering from a stroke should have a well-coordinated medical team to personalize palliative care services to optimize quality of life and minimize suffering, said Robert Holloway, M.D., M.P.H., lead author of the palliative care scientic statement and professor and chairman of the neurology department at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. As a member of both the Coalition to Transform Advanced Care and the Patient Quality of Life Coalition, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association is advocating for better public policy and urging Congress to come together around this important issue. With nearly 800,000 people suffering from strokes each year, the palliative care needs for stroke survivors and their families are enormous. Industry Awards Physical Education Teacher to be Honored with 2014 National Jump Rope for Heart Brown Held Local JRFH Event February 12-13th during American Heart Month RESTON, VA, 2014 Having lost two parents to heart disease, Slate Creek Elementary School physical education teacher Jim Brown has turned his loss into motivation. Over the past 31 years, Brown has raised thousands of dollars for cardiovascular disease and stroke research and educated a countless number of students along the way. On April 2, those contributions were be recognized nationally when the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) honored Brown with the 2014 National Jump Rope for Heart Recognition Award during its129 th Annual National Convention & Exposition in St. Louis. However, prior to receiving this national honor, Brown will hold his 32nd annual school-wide JRFH event at Slate Creek on February 12-13 th, as part of American Heart Month, where all 239 of his students will be participating in a variety of jumping stations.# The national award is given to an AAHPERD member who is a local JRFH coordinator who demonstrates commitment, leadership, and creative involvement to the JRFH program and to AAHPERD. Sponsored by AAHPERD and the American Heart Association, JRFH promotes physical education and provides children with knowledge of heart disease and stroke. The funds raised go towards cardiovascular disease and stroke research and health education. Brown has taught physical education at a handful of schools in Kansas and Nebraska, some with little nancial or administrative support to offer. Obstacles are just challenges in disguise, says Brown. When I did not have a gym, we jumped outside. When I was not allowed to hold events during the school day, we did it on weekends or after school. In the past, Brown has invited Funds raised to to cardiovascular disease reasearch Tweet local college athletes to come to his events to help inspire students to be active and eat healthy. He has even taken his excitement for jump roping outside of school by organizing a weekly jump rope club that performed in malls, libraries and other sporting and civic events. While the thousands of dollars Jim has raised in his career is impressive, as Jim has said himself, dollars are not the only way to measure growth. Knowledge and helping others to make healthy choices are other important ways to measure the programs success and the impact on the community, says Vicki Worrell, executive director of the Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (KAHPERD). While teaching K-4 at Slate Creek and other neighboring Newton schools, Brown has motivated his students to raise more than $16,000 dollars in the past seven years. With a school population that is more than 80 percent on free and reduced lunch status, I am very proud of my kids and their efforts to raise money for such an important cause, says Brown. When Brown is not teaching students about living a heart healthy lifestyle, he is busy mentoring other teachers new to his school district or educating school leaders about the JRFH program. His community service has led him to receive the 2001 KAHPERD Service Award and a 2013 KAHPERD JRFH Coordinator of the Year Award. Prior to that, Brown was the recipient of a 2011 JRFH grant and recognized from the Road Runners Foundation for promoting running as a heart healthy activity. He currently serves the Governors Council on Fitness as a Physical Activity Champion for Harvey County. The JRFH coordinator holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Wayne State College in Nebraska, and a Master of Science from Emporia State University in Kansas. About the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) The vision of AAHPERD is Healthy People Physically Educated and Physically Active! Headquartered in Reston, VA, 25 miles west of Washington, DC, AAHPERD is the largest organization of professionals involved in physical education, physical activity and school healthall specialties related to achieving an active, healthy lifestyle. Founded in 1885, its mission is to advance professional practice and promote research related to health and physical education, physical activity, dance and sport by providing its members with a comprehensive and coordinated array of resources, support and programs to help practitioners improve their skills to further the health and well-being of the American public. Tweet Jim Brown: National Jump Rope for Heart Award for 2014 Tweet Exclusive Feature Story Healthy Athletes: A Model Special Olympic Program by Cory Weaver, Chicago 1823 Logan Street, Muscatine, Iowa. Here you'll nd the YMCA, and if you're ever nearby on a Wednesday afternoon, you'll nd much more than exercise equipment and a gymnasium. You'll likely see Special Olympian Jason Norwood and retired factory worker Pat Hilton shooting hoops or tackling 'Killer Hill.' For this duo, working out together has cultivated an incredible bond through the Special Olympics Wellness Workout program. "Denitely my favorite part of the week is the three hours I spend with him," says Hilton. " We couldn't be any closer." Norwood has been participating in Special Olympics for nearly 15 years. During that time, his joking personality has always shone through with those he's worked with. As a result, it comes as no surprise that he tried to talk his way out of the hill known as 'Killer Hill' when he and Hilton rst began working out together. "When I rst started working with this guy and we'd been walking inside, he's like 'We walk the path but no hill," Hilton recalls. Not knowing what Norwood meant, the two set off for the outdoor path. They continued walking the path a ways and once they reached the hill, Hilton realized what Norwood was talking about. "I don't walk that," Norwood said with his slight speech impediment. "Too hard work." Jason Miller is the Special Olympics Director at the Muscatine Y. 'Coach,' as athletes call him, runs various events and programs for Special Olympic athletes. What's unique about the Wellness Workout program is it aligns with a larger overarching Special Olympics program. "The wellness workout program really ts in line with the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program," Miller said. "It ts into those focus areas to where we can get our athletes healthy and keep them healthy." Healthy Athletes focuses on various aspects of a person's health, ranging from how to brush your teeth to overall health and well-being. Hilton works for Direct Care, where he supervises a group home and the athletes that live there. It isn't the same home Norwood lives in, but Miller says Hilton specically requested weekly one-on-one time with Norwood so they could still spend time together. That kind of dedication isn't something Miller normally sees in his work with the service providers. "They come in, they work part time, and they aren't paid very well so it's not like you can get the best workers to work with them," Miller said. "Pat's taken the initiative." Since the two began working together, both Norwood and Hilton have shown improvement in more ways than one. For Norwood, 'Killer Hill' isn't a battle anymore and he will even go up and down twice each time they walk the track. For Hilton, the improvement he's seen in his own health is just part of it. One, the working out is good for me," Hilton said. "Two, just being able to spend time with him, one on one. It's the highlight of my week, it really is." Hilton has learned a lot from the athletes about attitude and life in general. And while he admits he is getting older and won't be around forever, he is enjoying every minute he has with his newfound friend. "I call him my big teddy bear," Hilton said. "If he likes you, he will do anything to please you." Many of our employees have a family member serving in Iraq or Afghanistan and have started various drives to get the soldiers some good socks. Having made socks for over 100 years, we all know how important a quality sock can be in extreme conditions. We have had a heart-warming response from the soldiers thanking us both for the socks, and for the messages of support. Because of this, wed like to open up to you, the general public, this opportunity to support our troops in a very practical, caring way. Weve started keeping a wish list from soldiers of the numbers, sizes and types of socks they need. Now you can choose an item from the wish list and buy a soldier some socks, along with your own personalized message of support. Well cover the shipping costs. I hope you will consider helping us support our troops. John Lessard, Owner & President, Fox River Mills I cannot explain how much it means to receive that type of support for us out here. . . I had been in Iraq for approximately 1 month, and my feet were taking a beating. My feet were getting blisters and hot spots. My toes were so bad, it was painful to wear boots. I put them (Fox River socks, Style 6074 Wick Dry Maximum) on and I swear I will never wear a different brand again. Your socks are just that awesome!

Ideas for Giving: 3 pair of socks is a big help to most soldiers. 6 pair makes life easier. One pair of a typical Military sock costs $12.49. If you are sending as an individual, send a pair and a note. The personal note, coming from a stranger, means a lot to a soldier. Go in together with a group from your school, work, church or organization. If everyone chips in even a small amount, you can make some soldier very happy. The soldier, in turn, is tickled that a whole group of people/kids are thinking of him/her. (HINT: Print copies of this sheet and distribute at your church, school or organization to get more interest.) If you need to give a gift to the person that has everything, send socks to a soldier on their behalf.
