When He Comes
In relation to the dreams I've been having lately.
Class and social standards exist all over the world. The class systems of the world are heavily dependent on tradition and on keeping class exclusive. This focus has never been completely obliterated in today's modern world. InPygm alion by George Bernard Shaw, Eliza is full of dreams but due to her dreadful accent, no mobility in society that could allow her to fulfill these dreams. Despite advances in society, it's not an uncommon story, nor would it surprise me if something of the same vain were to happen right here in the moder day.
I believePygm al ion could have been set at any other time and place. Accents in todays modern world are not consciously regarded as social markers, however, subconsciously, they trigger stereotypes that may lead people to desire a different method of speech. When applying for a job one doesn't walk in using uneducated language and expect to get the job. Sounding educated is almost as important as being educated in todays modern society and in 19th century England. More emphasis was put on proper speaking and action in the 19th century, it is still important today, supporting my hypothesis, that
In Amy Tan's story, Mother Tongue, Tan explores the problems her mother had with communication due to her accent. Her mother experienced a lack of respect as well as condescending attitudes from those who were supposed to service her. This displays an importance of proper speech in modern times. It may have also affected her social mobility and people's opinion of her. Similarly, Eliza had the same difficulties.
In Anthony Burgess's novel A Clockwork Orange, he provides the characters withnads at, a distinct way of speaking that distinguishes the teenage delinquent characters in the novel from more grown up characters. LikePygm al ion, the author uses language to distinguish two different classes of people. However, A Clockwork Orange is set in the future. Language plays a large part in our society whether it be in 1890 or 2090.
