Class and social standards exist all over the world. The class systems of the world are heavily dependent on tradition and on keeping class exclusive. This focus has never been completely obliterated in today's modern world. Her mother experienced a lack of respect as well as condescending attitudes from those who were supposed to service her. This displays an importance of proper speech in modern times. It may have also affected her social mobility and people's opinion of her. Similarly, Eliza had the same difficulties.

In Anthony Burgess's novel A Clockwork Orange, he provides the characters withnads at, a distinct way of speaking that distinguishes the teenage delinquent characters in the novel from more grown up characters.
