TO: SUSANA MARTINEZ FOR GOVERNOR CAMPAIGN TEAM FROM: NICOLE McCLESKEY DATE: JUNE 30, 2014 RE: NEW MEXICO STATEWIDE SURVEY KEY FINDINGS
Governor Susana Martinez shows no ill-effects as the general election phase of the campaign is well underway.
Her image is as solid as ever -- 62% favorable/34% unfavorable.
On the other hand, Gary King is showing signs of distress one month post-primary
. King’s image rating is a net negative – 33% favorable/39% unfavorable. This reflects a markedly downward slide since May when King’s image was a net positive -- 42% favorable/24% unfavorable.
Independent voters (21% fav/41% unfav) and soft Democrats (24% fav/43% unfav) have developed a very negative impression of the Democrat nominee.
Martinez leads King on the gubernatorial ballot test 54%-38%.
Martinez’s definite vote is also very high at 45% who say they are firmly committed to her.
While already wrapping up the Republican vote (90%), the Governor carries Independent voters by a 60%-24% margin and polls a majority of soft Democrats –56%-32%.
The Bottom Line
Democrats have yet to make a dent in Martinez’s standing with voters, despite focusing exclusively on attacking her during the primary and all of King’s general election resources to date. As Gary King remains in an image free-fall, the Governor will continue to secure votes as she presses her case for needed reforms in the post-Richardson era.
