In The Story
The tournament is broken up into days, with each contestanthaving but a single tournament bout each day. At thebeginning of each day, all the players' characters findthemselves eating breakfast (plain rice) at the same table.Eagerly or reluctantly, they share their tales of the previousday's events. Even those who are knocked out of thetournament stay to see the end, and still have the chance toaccomplish what they desire. When you tell the day's story, other contestants will oftenspeak up to ask questions, especially when events seem tricky or impossible. One might question your strength or skill;another might ask how you resisted your opponent's well-known Fire Fist technique. Perhaps you tell a tale of seducing a great beauty, and others know of her vow of chastity. You will need to explain how you overcame thesethings or were defeated by them. At the end of the tournament, with only two charactersremaining, the temple's sparring grounds can no longercontain the contest. A fight breaks out at the breakfast table, and even one who was previously disqualified has a chance toprove that their art is supreme.
In Game Terms
In each day of the tournament you are given one suit of cards, ace through king. You pick six of these and place themface-down in front of you. Each time another playerchallenges your story, they must play a card. You reveal oneof your own cards and the person with the higher card winsthe challenge. You can combine two (but not more) cards inorder to beat a higher card. You must narrate the result, whether the challenger won or not. When you have no more cards left to flip over, yourcharacter's day is done. He or she rests, watching other bouts, eating in the mess hall, sulking in the temple, or just sleeping. If two players face each other in the tournament, treat it likea normal day in all ways. Only one of the players can tell thestory of the bout; the other must tell a story that seeks toaccomplish a different goal. When the final day comes, each goal you accomplished yieldsa number of cards equal to its importance. All players taketurns narrating their attacks and techniques, playing cards torepresent their prowess. The player whose cards add to thegreatest total defeats all the others, and is named championof the tournament.
