PCL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Taijuan Walker 
 was named PCL Pitcher of the Week, June 23-29. Walker made one start with the Rainiers over that stretch, posting a 9.0-inning shutout in Tacoma’s 2-0 win over Oklahoma City on Tuesday, June 24. He limited the RedHawks to 4 hits, issued 1 walk and struck out a season-high 8 batters on the way to collecting his first career shutout. The outing marked the second complete game of Walker’s career and first since tossing 9.0 innings with Single-A Clinton in a win against Great Lakes on June 13, 2011. In 6 starts at Tacoma this season, Walker has compiled a 2-1 record and a 4.11 ERA (14 ER, 30.2 IP). He has struck out 29 batters, walked 10 and held opposing hitters to .190 average in his second season with the Rainiers. Walker originally joined Tacoma’s roster on May 28 as part of a Major League rehab assignment before he was officially optioned to the Rainiers on June 10.
SMOAK ON REHAB ASSIGNMENT

Justin Smoak
began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on June 18. In 11 rehab starts with the Rainiers is he batting .220 (9x41) with 5 runs scored 3 doubles, 1 home run, 3 RBI and 5 walks. He was placed on 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad June 11 (retro to 6/10). Smoak had appeared in Seattle’s first 63 games of the season prior to missing the game on June 10. In 63 games, he is hitting .208 (45x216) with 26 runs, 12 doubles, 7 home runs and 29 RBI this season.
HART ON REHAB ASSIGNMENT

Corey Hart
 began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on June 21. In 9 rehab starts with Tacoma, he is batting .306 (11x36) with 2 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 4 RBI and 2 walks. Hart, 32, was removed from May 18 vs. the Minnesota Twins with a strained left hamstring. He was evaluated by Mariners Medical Director Dr. Edward Khalfayan the following day in Seattle, where he was diagnosed with a grade 2 hamstring strain. In 37 games this season Hart was batting .209 (29x139) with 5 doubles, 5 home runs and 17 RBI. He missed the entire 2013 season after undergoing a pair of knee surgeries.
COACHING STAFF

Roy Howell
 is the 29th manager in Tacoma franchise history. Howell is in his third season coaching in the Mariners organization after two seasons as the hitting coach at Class-A Advanced High Desert. His managerial resume includes 3 seasons at short-season Eugene (2003-05), 3 seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02).

: Last night’s game between the Generals and the BayBears was suspended due to rain. The game is scoreless with 1 out in the bottom of the 4th and Dan Paolini on first for Jackson. The game was stopped at 8:17 p.m. on Tuesday night and was officially suspended at 9:00 p.m. after heavy rains and winds hit The Ballpark in Jackson. The game will be picked up and finished on Wednesday at 5:05 p.m. at The Ballpark in Jackson with one on and one out in the bottom of the fourth. Wednesday’s scheduled game will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion to the suspended game, and will be a seven inning affair.

In 65 games with the Mavericks, Peterson hit .326 (89x273) with 51 runs scrored, 23 doubles, 1 triple, 18 home runs, 73 RBI, 23 walks and 6 stolen bases.  At the time of his promotion, he ranked among the California League leaders in nearly every offensive category, including slugging percentage (1st/.615), total bases (1st/168), RBI (1st/71), extra-base hits (T1st/42), home runs (2nd/18), doubles (3rd/23), hits (T5th/89) and average (6th/.326). Since May 8, Peterson leads all minor league players with 57 RBI, while ranking 2nd with 16 home runs. Peterson hit 16 of his 18 home runs with High Desert over 37 games (5/11-6/23). He hit safely in each of his final 10 games with 8 mutli-hit efforts, batting .442 (19x43) with 11 runs scored, 7 doubles, 6 home runs, 22 RBI, 5 walks and 1 stolen base (6/9-23). He also hit safely 20 of his last 22 games, batting .424 (39x92) with 22 runs scored, 13 doubles, 9 home runs, 35 RBI, 11 walks and 2 stolen bases (5/28-/623).
