Professor Dr. G.D. Yadav is the Darbari Seth Professor and Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, and, as well as Dean, Research, Consultancy and Resource Mobilisation at the Institute of ChemicalTechnology, Matunga (formerly UDCT) Mumbai. He is also appointed as the Chief Coordinator (directordesignate) of the Centre for Nanosciences and Nanotechnology, and Centre for Green Technology of theUniversity of Mumbai at Kalina Campus. He was born on 14 September, 1952 in
Arjunwada
village in Radhanagari Tehsil of Kolhapur District inMaharashtra. He studied at various places for his primary and secondary schooling including Arjunwada (up to 7
th
Standard), Shelewadi (8 and 9
th
Standard), Private High School Kolhapur (10
th
and 11
th
Std.(SSC))and Rajaram College, Kolhapur (Pre-Degree Sc. and Pre-Prof. Sc.). Although he had got admission to IIT-Bombay, he preferred to join the Department of Chemical Technology, University of Bombay for hisChemical Engineering degree. He earned his B. Chem. Eng. (1974) and Ph.D. (Tech.) in ChemicalEngineering (1980) under supervision of Professor M.M. Sharma,
FRS
. His doctoral work dealt with studiesin heterogeneous reactions, particularly gas absorption with chemical reaction and phase transfer catalysis. They proposed a new mechanism of solid-liquid phase transfer catalysis and his research wascommercialized. His work on gas absorption with instantaneous reaction followed by desorption of theintermediate gas was also acclaimed and resulted into commercial utility. He also served as AssociateLecturer in Chemical Engineering during 1976-80. He went to Loughborough University, UK asLeverhulme Overseas Visiting Fellow (1980-81) and worked on oil blob mechanics in porous media with DrG. Mason and on binary chromatography with Dr B.A. Buffham and published seminal papers. He returnedto India and worked briefly on a sponsored research project in 1982. He then joined the group of ProfessorF.A.L. Dullien at University of Waterloo, Canada (1982-86) and made significant fundamental contributions

to new methods of enhanced oil recovery, multiphase flow in porous media, flow visualization, network modeling and percolation processes. He was offered a post of Reader in Chemical Engineering by theUniversity of Bombay at UDCT, which he took up in October 1986. He was Herdillia Chemicals-UDCTDiamond Jubilee Fellow (1994-96) and was appointed to the endowed chair professorship in 1996, in thename of Mr. Darbari Seth, the doyen of Indian Chemical Industry, chemical engineer par excellence anddistinguished Chairman of Tata Chemicals. He was also the Johnsen Crosby Visiting Professor of Chemical Engineering at Michigan State University (2001-02), Distinguished Asian Visitor, PurdueUniversity (2007), and Distinguished Visiting Professor, Lunghwa University of Science and Technology,Taiwan (2007).He is a multi-faceted personality with an exceptional combination of scholarship and professional leadership, having a penchant for arts and literature. He writes poems and prose as well as known to his close friends asYogesh Yadav. He has made seminal and extensive contributions to
Green Chemistry and Technology, Catalytic Scienceand Engineering, Phase Transfer Catalysis, Nanomaterials, Nanocatalysis and Biocatalysis
. He is an activeconsultant to a number of industries and his research is commercialized. He has published 214 originalresearch papers in 41 different international peer reviewed journals with high impact factors, which find over2500 citations in papers, book/ monographs (27) and international company brochures (3). Besides, he hasmade over 250 conference presentations and given over 200 invited lectures/seminars. He has obtained 31patents and developed the UDCaT series of novel catalytic materials. He has guided 54 Ph. D. (ChemicalEngineering, Technology, Biotechnology and Chemistry ) and 47 Masters theses, as a single guide, written 2books. He has currently 15 Ph D and 8 masters students under his supervision. He has metamorphosed theChemical Engineering Department of the ICT with a new look through the active support of industries andtaken chemical engineering to new heights. Indeed, his contributions to the development of the UICTcampus and surrounding locality have been truly impressive and he was publically felicitated by the WadalaNeighbourhood Association for his singular efforts in removal of slums and beautification of footpathssurrounding the educational institutes Matunga-Wadala locality. He has established several endowments inUICT to assist needy students on merit-cum-means basis and other educational and welfare activities. He hasalso been the Head Warden of University Hostels. He has been a very active consultant to a number of renowned industries and has so far handled 47 projects.According to a recent survey by the Catalysis Society of India, Professor Yadav is found to be the numberone scientist in India in the field of catalysis based on Science Citation Index database, peer reviewed papers, citations and ‘h’ index. The survey by the CSIR on Indian S and T during 1997-2006, published recently, has

revealed that he is the only engineer to have figured in top 20 scientists of India as a highly productive andcited scientist with a variety of contributions and one his papers on Sulfated Zirconia is rated as the citationclassic with over 350 citations. In recognition of his exceptional impressive, wide ranging contributions and service to the ChemicalEngineering profession, he has been honoured by many professional bodies in India and abroad, industriesassociations and UDCT Alumni Association. He has been recognized with several national and internationalawards and accolades. The Institution of Chemical Engineers, UK bestowed on him its Fellowship inNovember 2007 for his great many contributions to Chemical Engineering profession. His scroll of awardsincludes: Dr H.L. Roy Memorial Lecture (Founder’s Lecture) of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers(2008), IPCL Award of ISTE (2008), President, Maharashtra Academy of Sciences (2007-09), Chairman,Catalysis Society of India, Mumbai Chapter (2006-09). The Govt. of Maharashtra’s Republic Day BestTeacher’s Award (2007), CHEMTECH Foundation’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to R and D(2007), Director of Asia Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineers (2003-), Johansen Crosby VisitingProfessor of Chemical Engineering, Michigan State University, (2001-02), Distinguished Asian VisitingScholar, Purdue University (2007), Distinguished Visiting Professor Lunghwa University of Science andTechnology, Taiwan, Prof S.K.
