The Fourth of July is America's birthday, but the date holds
special importance for Texans!
On July 4, 1845, one-hundred and sixty nine years ago, delegates met in Austin to debate the fate of Texas! President Jones of Texas called for a convention of delegates to meet in Austin to write a state constitution necessary for Texasannexation to the United States. Bexar County voters chose Jos Antonio Navarro and Volney F. Howard to serve as their delegates to the convention. Howard was a lawyer, newspaper editor and a native of Maine. Navarro was the only Tejano (native-born Texan) member of the 1845 Convention and as such would exert a moderating influence at a time when general animosity toward Tejanos was intense. (David McDonald, Historian and author of Jos Antonio Navarro, In Search of the American Dream in Nineteenth-Century Texas) On October 13, 1845, Texans voted 4,254 to 267 in favor of giving up the republic for the chance to join the United States.
