Attleborough High School is reapingthe benefits of having recentlyintroduced a Sixth Form PresidentialTeam. At Attleborough for many years aHead Boy and Girl and pairs of HouseCaptains for each of the four schoolhouses have been elected from theYear 11 Prefect Team. Elections for Year 11 House Captains have recently been held by whole school student
virtual voting through the school‘s
award winning Virtual LearningEnvironment.Whilst these important roles willcontinue to thrive and have a prominent impact on the school, thefast growing Sixth Form has presenteda need for Sixth Form representationtoo. Hence the innovation of a SixthForm Presidential Team - consistingof ten students whose role is toinvolve Sixth Formers and mainschool students both in the life of theschool and the wider community, andto provide exemplary role models for younger students. The students have attended trainingon mentoring and leadership andwill have the opportunity to carryout the diploma in leadership duringtheir tenure. Students have alreadymade an impact in the life of theschool: organising a Christmas Ballfor all of the Sixth Form, liaisingwith staff to improve the studyresources available for the SixthForm, exploring extending their social opportunities, developinglinks with specific subjects andfaculties, speaking at school OpenEvening and in assemblies and becoming involved in organisingsporting and charity events.Acting Deputy Headteacher Carmina
McConnell commented: ―Our Sixth
Formers are a highly talented andmotivated group of students. Thestudents who were chosen as the firstof the Sixth Form presidents for thisschool have the ability to inspire andsupport the rest of the student body both at Sixth Form and Main Schoollevel. This is an exciting development
for the school‖
 Lead President Laura Gipp
commented: ― We have the
opportunity to develop our individual interests and strengthswhen carrying out this role. For example, it is a great opportunity todevelop the resources in my
specialist area of Drama.‖

Watton TownCouncil sets lowincrease budget
Watton Town Council has set a budget for 2010/11 thatwill mean a typical Band D property precept will rise by only 4p per month; but only after a last minuteintervention by the Town Clerk, Mrs Jacqui Seal. This year, for the first time, individual committee budgets were set by councillors and an overalladministration budget was set by all the committeechairs. The resulting planned budget was £159, 659.During discussions at the full council meeting on the24
th

November, as a result of the Clerk‘s intervention, a
total of £10, 600 was trimmed from the amount set bycouncillors leaving a total budget for next year of £149,059 an increase of less than 1%.Among the items trimmed from the budget was £1,600of the amount set aside for civic regalia which wasreduced from £2,100 to just £500. Another major cut of £5,000 was made by making provision for the cleaningmaintenance costs of the town toilets, from the interestreceived from the commuted sum given by BrecklandCouncil when the toilets were first handed over. Thissum, which amounted to £165,000 left after
refurbishment costs, was placed into a bond at Clerk‘s
recommendation, a move which has since proven to be
financially prudent and highly beneficial to the town‘s
council tax payers.Councillors were delighted at being able to set such alow increase. Councillor Alf Harvey said he felt able to
―go home happy after being so worried about it‖.

THE WALSH CHILDREN OFNEATON REMEMBERED
There was an especially poignantmoment during the RemembranceParade at Watton in November. 90 yearsold, Maureen Walsh, the last survivingmember of the Walsh family who lived
at Neaton in the 1920‘s honoured her
brothers and sister by laying a wreath atthe Memorial. The wreath was laid byMaureen and Christopher, aged 9.Maureen, who is pictured in her wheelchair, served in the ATS from1939 to 1945 working as a team-leader in radiolocation and later as an MP. Of her brothers, Sam, served with theParachute Regiment and was takenPOW at Arnhem while Charles foughtand was wounded at Monte Casino andher sister Kathleen was in the LandArmy.A second wreath was laid in memory of Samuel Alfred Ward who was killed atPasschendaele in 1917 by his namesakeSamuel Walsh who is aged 11. Sam
Ward was the brother of Maureen‘s
mother and was well known locally andalong the Norfolk coast as a singer andentertainer. The Chairman and Members of theWatton & District Royal BritishLegion would like to thank allorganisations who took part in theseParades but mainly the people of Watton and surrounding districts whoonce again gave their whole-heartedsupport, not only in memory of thosefallen in past conflicts but right up tothis very day when our Servicemenand women are once more sacrificingtheir lives for our freedom.

Plymouth toDakar Challenge
People do some crazy thing for charity, butBrian Martin and Terry Young (picturedabove) are pushing the boundaries of craziness even further in their efforts to
help ―The Suzie Wright Leukaemia Fund‖.As Terry said ―you only live once and I
think this will be safer than our lastchallenge, White Water Rafting on theZambezi
―Brian and I are taking part in the
Plymouth - Dakar Challenge, and we startat Plymouth on January 3rd and expect tocover 4,000 miles ending up in Banjulsome 3 weeks later hopefully in one piece.
―In doing this challenge we shall be doing
something we always wanted to do and atthe same time raising money for localcharities in the Gambia and for "The SuzieWright Leukaemia Fund".
The challenge is to nurse a ‗knackered‘ car
all the way to destinations that peoplewould normally only consider flying to.
―We begin at Plymouth, then onto
Southern Spain where it really starts. Wethen head South through Morocco,Western Sahara, and Mauritania but after the Sahara Desert crossing the route headsinland to Mali, Senegal and onto Banjul inthe Gambia. In total some 4,100 Miles.
―On arrival our Vehicle is sold by the
Rotary Club Control Committee and thefunds raised will be passed to local worthycauses.
―This is a very expensive challenge so we
are asking for help by way of Sponsors,2/3rds of the money we raise will bedonated to our chosen local charity, and1/3rd will help us with our expenses. If you would like to sponsor Terry andBrian please get in touch with Terry at:Keepers Corner, Wretham, Norfolk IP241RD. Tel: 01953 499955.

1st Watton Brownies have been workingvery hard this month towards their Adventure 100 badge. In fact, we have been so busy, we nearly forgot what theinside of the Scout Hut looked like! Westarted the month with our Ice Coolchallenge and spent the evening tastingsome unusual ice-cream flavours- stem ginger was the favouriteand cardamom the least. Theweek of Halloween was just theright time to take on the In theDark challenge and we spent theevening blindfolded, playinghunting games and picnicing inthe dark. The blindfolded picnichad a mixed response - some of the girls were brave enough toeat whatever they were given, others were less trusting! As if Brown Owl would really feedyou cats eyes in bat poo ....!Bonfire Night was a very specialevening as we had a campfireevening and 2 new Brownies,Georgie and Beth, made their Promise in front of the bonfire. We have also been busy withlots of outings this month andhave been to the Theatre in Norwich and attended theRemembrance Sunday Parade inWatton. (pictured right). Our latest new Brownie, Dannii, made her Promise on the stage of the MaddermarketTheatre, before the show, which wascertainly an adventure! We are now over half way through our 10 challenges andlook forward to completing the badge inthe New Year.
Brownies Adventure on!
