OPPONENT

ONCE IS CHANCE, TWICE IS COINCIDENCE, ... 23 TIMES IS ZIMMER-IFIC

Ryan Zimmermans 2-out RBI single plated Denard Span (2 doubles) with the winning run as the Nationals nipped the Cubs, 2-1, on Sun. afternoon in DCZimmermans heroic hit was the 23rd of his career to come in the 8th inning or later (2nd
this season)...Washington improved to 6-2 in rubber games that decide the outcome of 3-game serieswith the win, the Nationals also claimed the season series
from the Cubs (4 games to 3), remained undefeated (4-0-2) in their last 6 series, and
rose to a season-high 9 games above .500...Jordan Zimmerman fired 6.0 scoreless
innings, lowered his ERA to 1.26 since June 1 and departed in line for the win, but
came away with a no-decision.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES
By debuting with their current clubs earlier this season, Nate McLouth
and Steve Lombardozzi became the 21st and 22nd players to play for
both the Nationals and Orioles (for the complete list entering the 2014
season, see page 140 of the Nationals Media Guide)...the 2 clubs have
also shared 2 managers (F. Robinson, D.Johnson) and 3 coaches...Buck
Showalter managed Matt Williams for 2-plus seasons while skippering the Diamondbacks...together, they helped ARI claim the NL West
Championship in its 2nd season and become earliest expansion club to
win a division title...the D-Backs 35-win increase from 1998 (65 victories) to 1999 (100) remains the largest one-year jump in MLB history.

11TH HEAVEN
Washington has played errorless baseball in 11 straight games dating to June 25...
this is the longest such streak recorded by any team in MLB this season...the 11game run of defensive perfection is the 2nd-longest recorded by the Nationals since
landing in DC in 2005...in 2011, from June 2-15, Washington played a Nationals (05pres.) record 13 consecutive games without an error.
BETTER LEATHER
The Nationals have made just 3 errors in 28 games dating to June 7 yielded just 2
unearned runs in June to set a new club mark for fewest unearned runs allowed in a
calendar month...as the season has progressed, the Nationals fielding percentage
has risen while their error totals and unearned runs allowed have declined:

to serve over 122,000 children annually.

DATE IN DC BASEBALL HISTORY

JULY 7
2007 - The Brewers hit 4 solo home runs, but Austin Kearns 2-run double
in the 5th inning broke a 2-2 tie and the Nationals held off MIL, 5-4. For
the 2nd time while representing DC, the Nationals were outhomered
by at least 4, but won the game (also Sept. 11, 2006 at ARI). In the 9th
inning, Chad Cordero retired both J.J. Hardy and Ryan Braun with the
potential tying run in scoring position to close out the one-run victory.
