Into the wide blue yonder
Its quite common to talk about students
moving through education, from one
stage of schooling to the next and out into
the world. But education itself must move
too move with the times, move beyond
the connes of the walls of the classroom,
or pages of a textbook and open up spaces
for blue-sky thinking that allow students
to imagine endless possibilities for a
future not yet written.
Monash graduates become leaders in teaching practice, public
debate, policy development, and community action around
the world.
Thats why we embed leadership into your course from the
beginning. As well as helping you to become an expert in
your eld, every Monash student learns to lead. You will
study units specically designed to enhance your leadership
skills and encourage innovative thinking. Because of this
Monash-educated teachers are in high demand meaning
we have consistently high graduate employment rates.
As published in The New York
Times, leaders from the worlds most
successful companies consistently
rate Monash as a preferred university
from which to hire graduates.

Emmeline Be
With an almost perfect ATAR score of 99.85 Emmeline Be knew
she could choose any course she wanted.
Ive always been passionate about education and teaching and
cant think of any better eld to work in. It helps people realise
their potential and pursue many more opportunities.
In her fourth and nal year, Emmeline completed her practicum in
two different schools in Johannesburg, South Africa.
It has been such a privilege to have taught in South Africa. I will
always cherish the opportunity of getting to know the incredible
students and people of South Africa, and teaching in a tiny
portable classroom with fty students scattered around the room
with absolutely no resources. Being immersed into an entirely
different cultural context has reinforced the fact that education is
key to empowering individuals.
Upon graduation, Emmeline landed a job at Balwyn High teaching
accounting and commerce.
Ive just started my rst teaching job, but my dream job would be
setting up education programs for an NGO somewhere overseas,
perhaps in Papua New Guinea, Vietnam or Tanzania.

specialisation
You can specialise to teach in the following education sectors
and graduate with an award that reects your expertise:

The secondary specialisation must be taken as part of a double

A comprehensive course is exible and
evolves as your interests develop in
particular directions.
You can start with units from a range of
study areas and through your choices
progressively focus on one or two majors
and minors.
Specialist focus
A specialist course offers you focus and
depth through specialisation in your area
of interest from the start of your studies.
Some undergraduate specialist courses
are designed to prepare you to practise
in a specied regulated profession
upon graduation. Others concentrate
on developing particular expertise but
may be applicable to a broader range
of careers options.
You will graduate with a degree that
reects your chosen specialisation.
Double degrees
A double degree course lets you gain skills
in two different areas of interest such as arts
and education or science and engineering.
This lets you tailor your qualication to
t your diverse interests and talents and
doubles your options when you graduate.
Double degree courses can take up to two
years less than if you took the two courses
one after the other. This is because the
electives from each degree course count
towards the other.
You will graduate with two distinct degrees.
Professional entry
graduate courses
Some courses at Monash prepare you for
direct entry to a profession upon graduation
with a bachelors degree.
However, you can also choose a
professional entry postgraduate course

degree that also prepares you for entry to
a regulated profession. These are usually
masters degrees.
Fields where we offer professional entry
courses for graduates include architecture,
law, accounting, teaching and nursing.
In some professional elds, including
law, teaching and nursing, we offer you
both options.

Curriculum studies
The knowledge and skills to enable you to become a skilled,
critical and effective educator through:
knowledge of what and how children and young people
learn in particular learning areas
learning how to design, plan and implement engaging,
innovative and productive learning experiences
learning how to teach to meet diverse learners needs.
Discipline studies
The content knowledge of the areas you will teach in schools or other
education settings.

I completed a TAFE certicate before applying to study
primary education at Monash University.
I must say that my initial intention was to become a
principal. But now, dealing with the kids and seeing the
difference in the classroom, Im no longer in a hurry to
climb the ladder. I am motivated and want to get marks
that I wouldnt have dreamed of when I was at school.

In my previous career as a qualied chef, I enjoyed
the teaching aspect and decided that I wanted to
do this full-time.
Being in an educational environment as a student has
been a great learning curve, and it has been terric
getting an insight into the role during placements.
I knew I would have great opportunities as a mature
age student at Monash. The faculty has been very
helpful from day one, since the time I enquired about
studying teaching.

Raising three kids with disabilities has
given me a real passion and insight for
teaching special needs children. Ive come
to realise that there are not many teachers
within our school system that really
understand special education. Im following
my passion to make a difference in the lives
of children, especially those with additional
needs in our schools. Monash has a great
reputation and the campus location was
perfect for me.

Bachelor of Education (Honours) in
Primary and Secondary Health and
Physical Education
Professor Dawn Penney
Dawn Penney has recently joined the highly dedicated
and experienced team of Health and Physical
Educators at Monash. Her arrival at the faculty
coincides with the launch of the brand new health and
physical education specialisation, within the Bachelor
of Education (Honours). This newly developed
specialisation will provide students with a foundation
from which to take up a range of career opportunities
in education, physical activity, health, sport and
outdoor education settings. It will introduce them to key
challenges and issues that educators and providers
working in these areas face amidst rapidly changing
worlds and in diverse communities. We will challenge
students to apply new skills and knowledge in their own
involvement as participants, teachers, coaches and
leaders in education and community settings.
