With an almost perfect ATAR score of 99.85 Emmeline Be knew
she could choose any course she wanted.
Ive always been passionate about education and teaching and
cant think of any better eld to work in. It helps people realise
their potential and pursue many more opportunities.
In her fourth and nal year, Emmeline completed her practicum in
two different schools in Johannesburg, South Africa.
It has been such a privilege to have taught in South Africa. I will
always cherish the opportunity of getting to know the incredible
students and people of South Africa, and teaching in a tiny
portable classroom with fty students scattered around the room
with absolutely no resources. Being immersed into an entirely
different cultural context has reinforced the fact that education is
key to empowering individuals.
Upon graduation, Emmeline landed a job at Balwyn High teaching
accounting and commerce.
Ive just started my rst teaching job, but my dream job would be
setting up education programs for an NGO somewhere overseas,
perhaps in Papua New Guinea, Vietnam or Tanzania.

My studies have helped me learn more about
other cultures. Ive been given the chance to
travel and work in unique places such as the
Cook Islands and the Solomons. In the Solomons
I worked with kids teaching cricket through a
job with the Australian Youth Ambassadors for
Development (AYAD).
Ryan is currently completing his honours project
off-campus while he works at a school in
Alice Springs.
My project will be about Sport, International
Development and Physical Education.

The Bachelor of Education (Honours) is a four-year course

prepares you to be a leader in education. You can focus your
studies in early childhood, primary or secondary education sectors
or a combination of these and choose from a wide range of
secondary teaching subjects, graduating with a highly-focussed,
career-ready qualication.
Honours puts
you ahead
The honours component of your degree is embedded into a four-year
course so that in an Australian rst you will graduate with an
honours qualication whatever your chosen educational setting and
whether you choose a single degree or a double degree course.
This means that when you graduate from Monash after four years you
are ready to take a leading role in your chosen educational setting and
teaching eld.
It also means that if you choose to study for a fth year either
immediately or at some time in the future you will be able to qualify
with an advanced masters degree, putting you ahead of the game.

The secondary specialisation must be taken as part of a double
degree course and the primary specialisation may be taken as part of
a double degree course. The design of these double degree courses
mean you graduate with two degrees instead of one in the time
normally taken for the single Bachelor of Education (Honours) course.
This is because the discipline studies requirement of your education
course is completed in the partner degree course.

Double degrees
A double degree course lets you gain skills
in two different areas of interest such as arts
and education or science and engineering.
This lets you tailor your qualication to
t your diverse interests and talents and
doubles your options when you graduate.
Double degree courses can take up to two
years less than if you took the two courses
one after the other. This is because the
electives from each degree course count
towards the other.
You will graduate with two distinct degrees.
Professional entry
graduate courses
Some courses at Monash prepare you for
direct entry to a profession upon graduation
with a bachelors degree.
However, you can also choose a
professional entry postgraduate course
after you have completed your bachelors
degree that also prepares you for entry to
a regulated profession. These are usually
masters degrees.
Fields where we offer professional entry
courses for graduates include architecture,
law, accounting, teaching and nursing.
In some professional elds, including

Commencing in 2015, students will study
the Bachelor of Education (Honours)
creating tomorrows leaders in education.
This new Honours structure provides essential core learning and
the competencies required to be an effective educator as well as
a pathway to further studies. It allows you to specialise in one of
eight areas graduating with a focused qualication.

Curriculum studies
The knowledge and skills to enable you to become a skilled,
critical and effective educator through:

Discipline studies
The content knowledge of the areas you will teach in schools or other

Professional studies
Development of your professional experience through:
teaching experience
research studies.
You complete a minimum of 80 days of supervised placement in
settings relevant to your teaching specialisation. This professional
experience connects the theoretical components of your studies
with the practical aspects of teaching and learning.
You undertake research units to develop knowledge of research
principles and methods and the skills and capacity to design and
conduct research with some independence. This increases your
understanding of the complex eld of education and may provide
a pathway for research and further learning.

Contemporary child development theories, sociology and
educational psychology and practices, and innovation in
curriculum and educational practice.
Curriculum studies
The focus is on how young children develop knowledge
and skills in literacy, play-based learning, numeracy,
health, science, the arts, technology, and environment

teaching and learning strategies.

I have always had a passion for teaching children,
particularly pre-schoolers, so that led me to study
early childhood education. After nishing school
at home in Malaysia, I chose to study at Monash
University because of its good reputation, not
just in Australia, but internationally. Studying at

Teaching and learning theories for primary school children,
and how to critically reect on contemporary education
issues and child development.
Curriculum studies
The focus is on the primary curriculum, including English
and literacies, mathematics, arts education, humanities and
social education, science, physical and health education,
and studies of the environment and sustainability. It develops

In my previous career as a qualied chef, I enjoyed

pathways
The Monash University English Language Centre is the preferred
English pathway into Monash University. If you do not meet
the English language requirement for direct entry into your
Education course you may receive a conditional offer for one
of our two programs:
Monash English Bridging (MEB)
This program is ideal for students who have narrowly missed the
English language requirement for direct entry. After successful
completion of a 15-week program, you will move directly into your
chosen Monash course without the need for an additional IELTS test.
Note: MEB is not accepted for entry into all degrees. Those who
are ineligible should consider Monash English.
Monash English (ME)
This program is designed for students who require additional English
language development to enter into either the Monash English
Bridging or University courses. Course duration depends on your
current English language prociency and your preferred destination
course. Intakes for Monash English occur every ve weeks.

Our students follow many different paths to their teaching degree,
including TAFE studies or transfer from another university course.
At Monash your age is not a factor when you apply just your
education background and experience. The year of entry depends
on what you have studied previously and your results.
Diploma of Tertiary
Studies (DoTS)
DoTS can help you get into Monash if:
you didnt achieve the Year 12 score you expected, or
you are returning to study.
Through DoTS, you can start studying your chosen eld from
day one of university, and it wont add any time to your course.
On completion of the DoTS program you can transfer into the
second year of a range of Education (Honours) specialisations.

Monash Access
Program (MAP)
MAP is an enabling course for mature age students.*
If you are motivated to learn and want to study at university,
but dont meet the standard admission requirements, MAP
may provide you with the skills and knowledge to gain access.
It prepares you for successful academic study at university level.
It will give you a solid foundation to progress into a range of
bachelors degrees at Monash University.
Priority will be given to students who have experienced nancial
or other disadvantage.

Master of Education
Graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) will be eligible for one
year of advanced standing into the Master of Education. The Monash
Master of Education has been designed to accommodate a range of
specialisations to suit the career and individual aspirations of people
interested in and passionate about education. Graduates of the Master
of Education can pursue leadership roles in business, community or
educational environments.

Pathways to PhD
Students who are eligible to continue their studies through enrolment
in a PhD will be required to complete additional research preparation
within the rst 12 months of their program. This would extend their
