Which CALL tools do you most want to learn more about and how can Jeff help? ( I
really do want this course to be 'just a beginning' and will be glad to do what I can to help
you take the next few steps after the course has finished) ?
The CALL tool I would like to learn more about is authoring tool because it is useful for
me in my teaching and learning. I think you can help me by providing me some website
addresses and instruct me clearly so that I can ue them to improve my teaching and
What advice do you have for Jeff and/or the VNU staff about how to help future EFL537 students avoid some of the stress and confusion many of you experienced during the first few days of this course?
Friendly and helpful teachers often cause less stress and confusion. I think you have done
this well. However, for each subject, we study together for a short time (only in two
weeks), teachers may choose some important and useful knowledge for us so that we can
feel less nervous and shocked when seeing a huge a mount of knowledge that we have to
I know that your Vietnamese is not very well, and when you ask me this question, you
want me to give some understanding about these useful websites. So it will be optional to
post information in English or Vietnamese. I mean I can choose. Is it right? That is why I
post some information here in English. And all the information hereunder is what I really
know about these websites. If you find it is not enough, would you mind providing me
with some more?

exercises which can be delivered to any Internet-connected computer equipped with a
you do NOT need to know anything about these languages in order to use the programs.
All you need to do is enter the data for your exercises (questions, answers, responses
etc.), and press a button. The program will create the Web pages for you, and you can
then upload them to your server. There are five basic programs in the Hot Potatoes suite:
TheJQ uiz program creates question-based quizzes. Questions can be
of four different types, including multiple-choice and short-answer. Specific feedback can
be provided both for right answers and predicted wrong answers or distractors. In short-
answer questions, the student's guess is intelligently parsed and helpful feedback to show
what part of a guess is right and what part is wrong. The student can ask for a hint in the
form of a "free letter" from the answer.
TheJCloze program creates gap-fill exercises. Unlimited correct answers
can be specified for each gap, and the student can ask for a hint and see a letter of the
correct answer. A specific clue can also be included for each gap. Automatic scoring is
also included. The program allows gapping of selected words, or the automatic gapping
of every nth word in a text.
TheJCros s program creates crossword puzzles which can be completed online. You can use a grid of virtually any size. As in JQuiz and JCloze, a hint button allows the student to request a free letter if help is needed.
TheJM ix program creates jumbled-sentence exercises. You can specify as
many different correct answers as you want, based on the words and punctuation in the
base sentence, and a hint button prompts the student with the next correct word or
segment of the sentence if needed.
In addition, there is a sixth program called theM as her. This is designed to create
complete units of material in one simple operation. If you are creating sequences of
exercises and other pages that should form a unit, you may find the Masher useful. The
Masher can also be used to upload Web pages not created with Hot Potatoes to
theww w .hotpotatoes .net server.
Delicious is a Social Bookmarking service, which means you can save all your
bookmarks online, share them with other people, and see what other people are
bookmarking. It also means that we can show you the mostpopular bookmarks being
saved right now across many areas of interest. In addition, our search and tagging tools
help you keep track of your entire bookmark collection and find tasty new bookmarks
from people like you
Folders were the old way to organize your bookmarks. They were great if you only had a
few bookmarks and a few folders, but as your collection grew, it became harder and
harder to decide what goes where. Delicious has a new and better way: tags.
Tags are simply words you use to describe a bookmark. Unlike folders, you make up tags
when you need them and you can use as many as you like. This means, for example, that
all of the bookmarks you tag with funny and video will automatically be placed in the
"funny" collection and the "video" collection. Since tags work the same way for
everyone, you can also check out other people's "funny" or "video" bookmarks. You can
even combine tags to see bookmarks with funny and video.
