Fish Entrapment The fishing zone ofWest Kalimantan includes a part of the South ChinaINatuna Sea. Based on Decree Number 995/Kpts/lK.120/9/99 of the Minister for agriculture, the fishing resource of the South China / Natuna Sea are estimated at 1,630,600 tonnes per year.The fishing potential of this zone i s utilized by West Kalimantan fishermen, but also by fishermen from other Provinces such as Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, DKI Jakarta, West Java and Central Java. The level of exploitation by these various fishermen is estimated at more than 550,000 tonnes, where West Kalimantan holds a portion of more than 65,000 tonnes per year. MARI NE AND FISHERIES 2. Cultivation Attempts a. Brakish Water Ponds The potential of seawater /shrimp ponds i s relative large in West Kalimantan, namely more than 26,704 Hectares, and includes parts of the Regencies of Ketapang, Sambas, Bengkayang and Pontianak. Until now, the utilization of these area has reached around 3,566,3 Hectares or 13.4 %of the tota potential area with a productivity rate of 3 to 6 tonnes / MT shrimp per hectare. The commodities cultivated here include Windu Shrimps (Panaeus Monodon), Bandeng, Kerapu (Ephinephelus Sp) and Crabs (Seylla Serrata). b. Freshwater Ponds The potential area for freshwater ponds i s estimated at more than 11, 276 Hectares, and separated around all RegenciesICity of West Kalimantan. Until now the utilization of these area has reached only 2,819,6 Hectares or 25 % of the total potential area. Generally, the commodity cultivated in West Kalimantan comprises Mas (Cyprinus Carpio), Nila (Oreochromis Niloticus ), Lele (clarias Brata clus), Jelawat ( Leptobarbus Hoeveni ) and others. In the future, the prospective fresh water pound must be developed intensively both saplings and mature such as local fish like Betutu (Oxeleo tris marmorata), Patin Kunyit (Pangasius SP), Semah (Leptobarbus SP), Jelawat (Leptobarbus Hoeveni), Galah Shrimp (Macrobrochium resenbergii), Kaloi, Labi-labi (Trionyx cartelageneus), Belida and Ulang-Uli (Botia SP), Arwana (sclereophagus formosus). c. Seawater Cultivation Zones The potency of sea water cultivation zones i s relative large, especially in bays and other protected area, where the depth reaches 10 to 30 meters and the water i s relatively clear such as area in the Regencis of Ketapang, Bengkayang, and Pontiana k. Species with good prospects include Kerapu ( Ephinephelus SP), White Snapper (Lutjanus SP), Pearls (maxima Sp), Sea Weed and others.
