Charges announced in murder of IMPD Officer Perry Renn Major Davis Jr. charged in July 5 shooting death of officer
(Indianapolis, Ind.) Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry announced today that Major Davis Jr. has been charged with Murder in the shooting death of IMPD Officer Perry Renn on the evening of July 5 on the citys eastside.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case, Davis is accused of firing on Officer Renn and IMPD Officer Nicholas Gallico when the two officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area. Officer Renn was struck by three rifle rounds believed to have been fired by Davis in an exchange of gunfire with the officers.
While there is little that can be said or done to provide solace to a family, a police department and a community grieving the loss of Officer Perry Renn, we fully intend to bring to justice the man believed to be responsible for his death, Prosecutor Terry Curry commented. As I have said in the past, no homicide or violent act on any member of our community is acceptable. The men and women of the Marion County Prosecutors Office grieve with the family of Officer Renn, with IMPD and other police partners, and with the entire community as we continue to hold those accountable who commit these crimes of violence.
If convicted, Davis faces a sentence of 45 to 65 years for the murder. Prosecutor Curry has also filed a sentence enhancement request for use of a firearm in the murder which could increase the sentence by up to 20 years.
The case has been assigned to Criminal Court 2. Davis remains in stable condition at Eskenazi Hospital. An initial hearing has not yet been scheduled.
A charge of a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. -30-
