Presidents Message
Like a well-oiled machine, the Committee that
put together the Annual Meeting did their super
best. Thank you to: Beth Smith-Kellock, Connie
Wortham, Sandra Dickey, Fran Garbaccio,
Sharon Murphy, Toni Navarro, and Mary Talwar
for everything. Thanks too, to those who brought
the delicious food, to the Committee for my colorful
lei to go with our Hawaiian theme, and to Library
Director Carolyn Thomas for the beautiful bouquet.
Perhaps the most surprising and gratifying report
for the years end was Connie Worthams statistic
that volunteers for the Friends reported over 4,000
hours for the year. Thats 1,000 hours over last
year! We all know that volunteer hours get under-
reported; and all of you wonderful volunteers
worked much more than that, so hopefully next
year, we can surpass that number again by 1,000.
As noted last year, we were working on a project
for a place to store our books for the Best Used
Book Sale. This proved much more complicated
than we had planned and weve tabled this until
October. We hope by then we will have a feel for
what is happening to our Strategic Plan and how
that all ts in with our nancial planning. As the sub-
committees meet, we will keep you, the members
of the Friends, updated. The sub-committees are:
Mission and Purpose, Public Relations, Financial
Development, Governance (Development of Future
Board Members and of the Board itself), and
Membership. If anyone would like to serve on one
of these committees, please email me at alcorn_
pat@yahoo.com.
Dont forget our Savor the Flavor Summer Event
where we can enjoy the newest food delights while
earning 10% of the sales from our night out. See you
at Savor the Flavor, located at 11 Kersting Court in
Sierra Madre, on Thursday, July 17, at 6:15 p.m.
Please help us by supporting our Partners Program
and renewing your membership to the Friends. With
your help, we can continue to keep our Community
Library the vibrant, active entity it is today. You can
pick up applications for both at the Library.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2014-2015
At their annual dinner meeting, held on June 18, the Friends of the
Library were pleased to announce the candidates that had been
approved for positions on the Board of Directors for 2014-2015.
They are:
REMEMBERING MARY TUMILTY
September 29, 1914 - July 28, 2010
Friends and colleagues - such as myself - fnd it hard
to believe it is four years since Mary Tumilty passed
away on July 28, 2010 at the age of 96. Her centennial
birthday - 100 years - would have been celebrated on
September 29, 2014. We can only imagine how very
festive that special day would have been!
Mary cared deeply about our Library and was totally
dedicated to the well-being of the Library itself, as well
as its staff and patrons. She served frst as a volunteer,
then a staff member and for 10 years as City Librarian.
It was an exciting 10 years to which many can attest.
She initiated many programs - Fridays at Eight and
the Travelers and Collectors series come to mind.
The Walt Wesley Computer Literacy Center and the
Dickinson Garden Walk were built during her tenure.
Her strong presence and goal-oriented success were
always at the forefront.
At the time of Marys retirement as City Librarian
in 1984, the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library
established the Mary Tumilty Endowment Fund (MTEF)
in her honor. The MTEF has helped support and make
many of our Library projects become realities - i.e. -
the dedication of the long awaited renovation of the
Rotary Childrens Library Room in June 2012. Mary
had requested a generous donation be made from the
MTEF to the Sierra Madre Library to help make the
proposed improvements a reality. She would be so
very proud of the room our children enjoy today!
For further information, please note the details and
- return address - on the enclosed fyer about how you
can remember Mary and her many accomplishments.
She was a strong presence and a loyal, dedicated
Friend who made a distinctive difference in the life of
our Library.
Thank you - on behalf of Mary, the Friends and our
Library - for your kind consideration and support.
Sincerely,
Beth Smith-Kellock
Vice President

12 Years a Slave: A True
Story of Betrayal, Kidnap
and Slavery
by Solomon Northup
Upon meeting Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of
Uncle Toms Cabin, in 1862, Abraham Lincoln is
alleged to have said, So youre the little woman
who wrote the book that made this great war!
Theres no suggestion that Lincoln ever read
Solomon Northups account of his ordeal as
a free man from New York who was enslaved
for 12 years on the plantations of Louisiana.
Northup dispels the historically revisionist notion
of slavery as a benign and paternalistic institution
that civilized the heathen Africans. As he makes
clear, slaves were chattel, bought and sold like
real estate, using fnancial instruments like
loans and mortgages, and subjected to frequent
whipping, beating and lynching. Plantation
livestock received better treatment. Unlike
Stowes omniscient narrator, Northup recounts
only what he experienced and witnessed. Thats
quite enough to make the case for abolition.
The movie version, available at the Library on
DVD, presents the appalling horror of slavery
in living color, with period dialogue supplied by
Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley. Lincoln
couldnt see it, but you should.

program. We also had a wonderful time
learning about the many jobs of our local
police. The Library enjoyed having 125
participants attend the program.
