TESTS ON BRICKS
5.1 Field tests on bricks
Aim: To conduct field tests on bricks.
Mteril: Bricks taken from the stack.
!roced"re: Bricks are widely used material in construction
work. The following are the field tests to be conducted on
bricks.
1# $rdness: A scratch is made on brick surface with a
fingernail, no impression should be left on the surface. Now the
brick is assumed to be hard.
%# S&'e nd si(e: The brick should be of standard size
and its shape should be truly rectangular with sharp edges.
Take
20 bricks of standard size !" # " # " cm$ at random from the
stack, placed along length wise, along the width and along the
height. %or good &uality of bricks, the results should be with in
the following limits.
'ength( )*+0 mm to )"20 mm
,idth( !-.0 mm to !+*0 mm
/eight( !-.0 mm to !+*0 mm
)# So"ndness: The bricks should not break and gi0e a
clear ringing sound when they struck with each other.
*# Colo"r nd ''ernce: The well1burnt brick should
ha0e copper red colour and free from cracks. The colour
should be uniform and bright. The bricks when broken should
show a bright homogeneous and uniform structure, free from
0oids.
5# Stren+t&: The brick should not break when dropped on
a hard ground from a height of about ! m.
Res"lt: Based on filed tests the bricks are suitable 2 not

After this period, each brick is taken out of water and cleaned with dry
cloth. The bricks are again weighed accurately. The 9ifference in
weight gi0es the amount of water absorbed by the brick. The bricks
should not absorb water more than 20: by weight for first class
bricks and 22: by weight for second1class bricks.
