Start-Up Launches Innovative British Designed and Built

Analogue/Digital Music Synthesiser

Next Generation Music Synthesiser will drive a New Wave of Music Creation.
Bristol, UK (uly !!, "#!$% -- Modulus, a Bristol-based start-up that designs and
manufactures musical instruments, has launched the Modulus&##", the world's first
analogue/digital music synthesiser designed for the Internet age. Designed and built in the U
by a team of passionate synthesiser e!perts, it creates the rich analogue sounds that ha"e
been at the heart of creati"e music since the #$%&'s by using a mi! of classic analogue
techni'ues and the latest digital technology to gi"e reliability and inno"ation.
()nalogue synthesisers from the last century are collectors' items and highly sought after
because of the ama*ing sounds but the electronics are now getting old and increasingly frail,(
e!plained +hilip ,aysom, Modulus co-founder. (It's tough to use them for li"e performances or
recording sessions as they are difficult to -eep wor-ing. Most modern designs of polyphonic
synthesisers are pure digital and .ust don't ha"e the same iconic sound 'ualities, in our
opinion. /hat we ha"e created in the Modulus.&&0 is a fusion of these iconic analogue and
hybrid sounds of the 1&s and 2&s synthesisers with the reliability of the latest electronics plus
Internet connecti"ity to share sounds, settings and wor- collaborati"ely on music without
relying on painfully slow serial/MIDI connections to do so. ,his is the first synthesiser
designed for the interconnected 0#st 3entury. ,he U pioneered the synthesiser industry
bac- in the %&s and 1&s and that has grown to a three-'uarters of a billion pound a year
global business, but now with little U input. /e are putting the U bac- on the map with the
first polyphonic synthesiser to ha"e been completely designed and built in the U for se"eral
decades.(
Modulus was founded in 0&#4 by +hilip ,aysom and +aul Maddo!. +hilip has o"er 4& years of
e!perience in the electronics and computer industries ha"ing been 3,5 and co-founder of
+lanet 5nline 6the creators of the highly successful 7reeser"e internet ser"ice8, 3,5 and co-
founder of in,echnology plc, and 395 of +eratech. +aul has been designing synthesisers for
o"er #: years with a reputation in the industry for designing state of the art products that bring
the best of classic designs into the modern age. ,his highly e!perienced management team is
complimented by designers and engineers, most of whom are also graduates in Music
,echnology. ,his team of eight has ta-en .ust under a year to ta-e the Modulus.&&0 from
drawing board to "olume production.
()longside the "oice architecture, a -ey
inno"ation is that the Modulus.&&0
connects to the Internet,( e!plained
+aul Maddo!, Modulus co-founder. ()s
musicians and synthesiser enthusiasts
oursel"es, we -now e!actly how people
actually use synthesisers and what they
wish they could do; so we designed the
Modulus.&&0 to be the instrument that
meets those needs and be the ne!t
generation synthesiser to inspire a new
wa"e of musical creation. <ynthesisers
ha"e been a defining part of the music
of e"ery decade for the past fifty years
with each new generation of synthesiser pro"iding a new soundscape. Being able to wor-
collaborati"ely is fundamental and the Modulus.&&0 enables this to happen "ery easily using
its Internet connection to the Modulus, cloud-based ser"er platform to share settings,
se'uences and sounds. Musicians can now wor- together thousands of miles apart to create
new music together. But, we wanted to go further than this, so we're ma-ing our cloud
technology 5pen +latform and, later in the year, we aim to form a consortium to encourage
adoption of this standard by other manufacturers.(
,he Modulus.&&0= is the first in a
planned family of synthesisers that will
be launched o"er the ne!t few years.
Dealers and agents are being

Modulus&##"
Using high 'uality components, the
Modulus.&&0 is a premium product designed to be the flagship in the Modulus range. ,he
-eyboard layout includes a semi-weighted, fi"e octa"e -ey mechanism and has been
ergonomically designed by musicians so that the hands fall naturally and intuiti"ely to the
controls. It pro"ides twel"e discrete "oices of polyphony with full multi-timbrility if re'uired.
)dding to the ease of use is a large integral display screen that is conte!t sensiti"e, i.e. it
displays the control parameters of any control -nobs immediately when touched by the user.
Duic- recall ban-s enable preset se'uences and settings to be stored for instant use such as
during a li"e performance. E35s 6Eumerically 3ontrolled 5scillators8 are used for stability
and accuracy while an analogue transistor ladder filter pro"ides classic 'warm' sounds. 7ull

Synthesisers
<ince the first commercial synthesisers became a"ailable in the #$%&s - notably those from
Moog, 9M<, )G+, Goland and org, synthesiser music has been an integral part of the sound
of each decade. 9!perimental and Goc- in the %&'s by ,he /ho and +in- 7loyd. >ean
Michelle >arre, Mi-e 5ldfield, raftwer-, )bba, and Go!y Music are a few of the bands that
brought the synthesiser into mainstream music in the 1&s. By the 2&s, the choice of
synthesiser sound defined the band for the li-es of Depeche Mode, <oft 3ell, +et <hop Boys,
Duran Duran, etc. 7rom the $&s on, synthesiser music then became the bac-bone of ,echno,
,rance, )cid, Harage, Ga"e and Iip Iop, and is still at the heart of music being created today
and is as fundamental as the microphone in recording music.
Modulus Li'ited
Modulus is a U-head'uartered designer and manufacturer of electronic musical instruments.
Based in Bristol, U, the company employs a team of eight engineers in the design of its
synthesisers. Modulus instruments bring cutting edge technology and user interface features,
but combine them with traditional "oice architectures, gi"ing musicians access to the -ind of
synthesiser sounds pre"iously only a"ailable from "intage instruments from the 1&'s and 2&'s.
7ounded in 0&#4, Modulus builds on the fifteen-year e!perience in designing and constructing
high 'uality synthesisers of its co-founder, +aul Maddo!. Bringing high technology into
musical instruments has always been a passion for +hilip ,aysom, a serial technology
entrepreneur, co-founder of Modulus. Modulus is pri"ately owned and financed.
