Linda A. Doll
I certainly hope you all had a happy 4th.
Te NWS All-Member Exhibition is fabulous. John Asaro, our juror,
did an outstanding job both in his selection and in the awards. If you
havent yet seen the exhibition you defnitely should make a point to go
by. Te Gallery is open Tursday through Sunday 11 AM to 3 PM. Dates
for the member exhibit are June 7 through August 17, 2014.
A big thanks goes to all the volunteers who made this show possible, both through donations
and through hard work, especially to Penny Hill, our dedicated 2014 Exhibition Chair and
Son Do our 2015 Member Exhibition Chair, for presiding over the jury process, and to Steve
Abshear and David Teter for doing a fabulous job placing and hanging this wonderful exhibit.
A big thanks also goes to all who entered the show. Te quality of our entries was super and
made Johns job quite difcult. Congratulations to those of you who were juried into the
exhibition. It is truly a wonderful exhibition. Our Award Presentation and Opening was well
attended and enjoyed by all.
Te August 2 deadline for our Annual Exhibition Image Entry is approaching quickly. You
can download instructions from our web page, www.nationalwatercolorsociety.org. We are
using Wild Apricot to upload images directly to our web page, but are also still accepting
CDs. Uploading instructions as well as mail-in instructions are also on the web page. Mark
your calendar right now so you dont miss the deadline. More than $40,000 in awards will be
presented again this year. If you need help uploading, call me and Im happy to help.
Donations towards our Gallery Staf Fund are always welcome. We defnitely dont have
enough volunteers, so we need to hire staf and the budget for this is non-existent. Several
members have donated to the fund when they would love to sit but cant because of distance
or personal reasons, so instead they have made a donation to pay for a day of stafng. Tis is a
big help. Want to donate? Any amount helps. You can send in a check, specifying Gallery Staf
Fund, to: NWS, 915 S. Pacifc Avenue, San Pedro, CA 90731 or donate online on our home page.
Linda A. Doll,
President

2014 NWS Events At-A-Glance
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
E
au en Couleurs Biennial Internationale dAquarelle is being held in Belgium from August
15 through September 7, 2014. Tis years Biennial celebrates the use of light in painting.
We are pleased to announce that several NWS members have been selected from the open
competition. Congratulations to Kathleen Conover, Elaine Daily-Birnbaum, Laurin McCracken
and Kris Preslan whose paintings will be included in the Biennial.
On display at the same time are the works of seventeen NWS members in the frst of what
is hoped to be many invitational exhibitions. Representing National Watercolor Society in
this frst International Invitational Exhibition are Linda Baker, Chris Beck, Linda Doll, Frank
Eber, Jeanne Hyland, Paul Jackson, Andrew Kish III, Jonathan Knight, Sherry Matlack, Geof
McCormack, Dean Mitchell, Laura Mitchell, r. mike nichols, David Poxon, John Salminen,
Tomas Schaller and Iain Stewart.
One year ago, at the end of the frst Eau en Coulours biennial, we began exploring the idea of
exhibiting the works of watercolorists from around the world at the NWS gallery as well as showcasing the works of NWS members in
other parts of the world. Catherine De Ryck, president of Eau de Couleurs, extended her invitation
and NWS was proud to have our members showcase their work in this great venue. It has been a
journey to organize and work out the details at the same time that Catherine was working on the
open competition. I wish to thank Catherine De Ryck, president of Eau de Couleurs in Belgium.
Merci merci merci. A big thank you also goes to the brilliant Geof McCormack who is handling
all the logistics of shipping, customs and endless headaches that accompany international shipping.
Please send him aspirin along with your thank you cards. Many, many thanks, Geof. And a special
thanks to David Poxon, who helped to develop this great idea, our man for all international brain-
storming sessions. Proof of how much work can be accomplished via SKYPE, Facebook, internet
communication, and shockingly, even a telephone call or two. Tis is just the beginning of a
wonderful partnership and exchange of ideas. Cest si bon! Chateau de Bourgogne:

NWS All Member Exhibition
BY PENNY HILL, DIRECTOR MEMBER EXHIBITION
T
his spring brought lots of excitement with the 2014 All Member Exhibition. We had many new members join us with a plethora of
exciting new techniques and inspirations. Every type of material was implemented to create stunning works that will bring a smile
to your face and, if I may introduce an itch to your brain, youll be asking yourself, How did they come up with that ??? THAT is
what makes NWS the innovative society that is fast approaching its 95th Anniversary.
Of the almost 500 entries we only had fve mail-ins. We are very proud of our members who took the
extra step of learning the online entry process through their membership account on our website. A big
thank you goes to NWS President Linda Doll who stepped into the NWS attic and opened the windows to
welcome us into the 21st century.
Californians are known for being laid back, so we just work around whatever nature tosses our way. A
giant round of applause goes to our Juror and fellow Californian, John Asaro, for leaving home as the
wildfres were raging to trek up to San Pedro and jury the show. John also braved the man-made obstacle
of Saturday trafc to come up for the shows opening and meet the artists. Its not ofen these days that
a juror has the time or inclination to attend the opening reception and it is so valuable to be able to
converse with your juror. One award winner said that the time spent with John meant more to her than her prize money.
Our team for exhibitions can always use more artists stepping up to assume positions of FUN (as I call
them). Tis year Son Do, one of our Signature Members, was on hand to learn the jurying process and
help plan the hanging of the show. Son will be next years All Member Exhibition Chair. Our excellent
hanging crew, Steve Abshear and Signature Member David Teter, have made hanging the show a fne art.
Remember, the more of us working together, the lighter the load (and of course, the more FUN!).
Te exhibition is on display until Sunday, August 17th, at which time John Salminen, one of the jurors
for our Annual International Exhibition, will be holding a lecture at the NWS Gallery in San Pedro,
California. You may attend in person or through streaming online attendance. Yes, weve had NWS
lectures streamed as far as Paris and yes, they provide the wine. On August 7th, we will lead the First
Tursday Art Walk, 6-8 p.m. at the NWS Gallery in San Pedro.
So please check our website for upcoming events and submit your entry the for the 2014 Annual International Exhibition soon. And
join in the FUN.

NWS GALLERY
SAN PEDRO, CA
Katherine Chang Liu is an
abstract painter, collage artist
and printmaker, and an inter-
nationally renowned painter,
teacher, curator and juror. Born
in China and raised in Taiwan,
her work has been featured in
26 books and over 70 magazine
articles, and she has served as a frequent juror for national,
regional, and statewide exhibitions and has appeared in many
publications. She enjoys acrylics because they are more conducive
to layering of colors. See how she approaches working with inside
shapes and edges as well as learn how she paints and thinks about
the negative spaces in her abstract collages, giving them elements
that acheive a certain feeling.
