The annual lm guide is the main publication of
the Slovenian Film Centre. In the electronic form
it can also be foundon ourwebsite. We enteredthe
year 2014 with an important new development:
short lmsgot theirowncatalogue, since inthe last
fewyearsit became apparent that they neededone.
Therefore more information about short lms be-
tween2010and2014 canbe foundinthe otherpub-
lication. This catalogue, however, covers features
as well as mediumlength and feature documenta-
ries, andit demonstratesthat 2013 wasavery suc-
cessfulyearforSlovenian lms.

great boxofce results. InSloveniaaswellasabroad
Class Enemy, the debut by Rok Biek, hadthe great
fortune of enjoying an extraordinary international
festivalanddistributionsuccess(fornowtheatrical
distribution in Austria, Switzerland and Italy) as
wellasavery favourable response fromthe (Slove-
nian) viewers. Slovenian cinemas simultaneously
showedasmany asthree Slovenian lms. Since all
three of themhadaremarkable numberof viewers,
the myth that Slovenian lms should not compete
witheachotherinthe domestictheatricaldistribu-
tion have nally crumbled to dust. RTV Slovenija,
ourpublictelevision, producedtwo feature debuts:
Seduce Me by Marko anti and Panic by Barbara
Zemlji. Documentariesreachintothe eldof mod-
ern arts and portray extremely interesting, witty
andcreative artists, especially relevant forthe area
of the formerYugoslavia.
In 2014 Vinko Mderndorfer completed his third
feature lm Inferno, while The Tree is the rst
lm by Sonja Prosenc. Quite a few projects are in
the works: the veterans Damjan Kozole and Jan
Cvitkovi are returning soon; Vlado kafar and
Miha Knic are making their second features;
while iga Virc and Toma Gorki are working on
theirdebuts. Afterhisfeature, RokBiekisworking
on adocumentary lm, andso isMetodPevec. Co-
productions have also strengthened their position
anddirection:The Reaper andThe Butcher Heart
are being made with our neighbour Croatia, Our
Everyday Lifewith BosniaandHerzegovina, while
Family Filmby Olmo Omerzuisbeing workedonin
cooperation with the Czech Republic.

The lmfocuses on a young unemployed working-
class family (mother, father and two children) and
their everyday struggle for survival. The family is
like any ordinary European family, trying to make
a living with the work of their hands. Due to the
global economic crisis their life ends up in a blind
alley.
Everything looksasif there isno way out. That in-
dividualscannot ght against injustice, misery, the
unseen authority of the capital However Gran-
ite cubes, torn out of streets, are waiting Have
waited For centuries. Inferno exists. But only
temporarily.
VINKO MDERNDORFER (1958, Slovenia), director and
writer, graduated in theatre direction from AGR-
FT. He directs also theatre plays, opera perfor-
mances and television works. His feature Suburbs
premiered in Venice and Montreal and has also
been selected for the Karlovy Vary, Cannes (Tous
les Cinemas du Monde), and other festivals. Sub-
urbs has received six international and national
awards and was selected for the Variety Critics
Choice: Europe Now in 2005. Mderndorfers fea-
ture Landscape N2 premiered in Venice. It has
received eight international and national awards
and was the Slovenian candidate for the Academy
AwardforBest Foreign Language Film2009.

The world today looks like inferno: an unjust hell where those who are unlucky
just like the protagonist of our lm are simply unable to nd the way out of their
misery. Of course, Inferno is by no means an abstract meditation on hell and
evil. It addresses a concrete social and political situation, in which the world has
found itself because of the gluttonous, insatiable global capitalist monstrosity. In
order to express all the powerlessness that millions of people wake up with every
morning, I have only focused on a single story of a young family which only wants

she took part in the Sarajevo and Berlinale Talent
CampusandwasselectedforTorinoFilmLab.
The Tree is her rst feature. The project has been
developed at EAVE 2012 and Baltic Event in Tal-
linn.

Marko, Adi, Aco in Dejan hang out in front of a
block of atsin Fuine, an ill-famedLjubljanasub-
urb. Marko isangry because he quit playing basket-
ball, a sexy TV presenter does not notice him, and
hisfatherRadovan isgoing to tan hishide forquit-
ting basketball. Adi is irritated by the fact that his
brother Sanel is a drug addict and because his fa-
ther Mirsad prefers to shag waitresses somewhere
in Austria than to deal with this. Makarovika a
chefur girl gives Aco a hard time, while Aco
would like to take a revenge against Damjanovi,
a bus driver. Dejan is anxious because his mother
Sonja wants to move to a smaller town. Then po-
licemen stop the boys one night and their world

We tend to forget how fragile and vulnerable immigrant families are. As they live
abroad they are cut of not only fromtheir culture, but also fromtheir relatives
and friends. Kids are often out on a limb because their parents feel helpless just
like their children do. They are all lost in a world of diferent social norms and
customs where rules that are unclear to themapply. The parents hardly know
what is right, what is allowed and what is not, so they cannot teach their children

The popular heroes from Going Our Way are reu-
nited in a scout camp the following summer. This
time their neighbours are scouts from Styria, and
their neighbours camp leader has almost identi-
cal character traits as their own camp leader. For
starters, the Marmotsstealtheirag
The rivalry between the two scout campsseemsto
have no limits until the arrival of a female inspec-
tor, who is on a monitoring mission and needs to
check whether the camps are being run in accord-
ance with certain European guidelines.
During the morning lineup three Teddies (the
youngest scouts)turn out to be missing. The scouts
from Styria prove to be excellent pals. They help
to conceal the absence of the three juniors from
the lady inspector, and then the scouts from both
campsorganise ajoint rescue expedition.

After the death of Zorans aunt only Paolo can take
care of the boy as he is the only family Zoranhas left.

revealed and fortune nally seems to smile onPaolo:
he wants to take Zoranto a world tournament with a
considerable cashprize. However, due to his super-
cial relationship with his nephew, Paolo fails to take

The new tycoon Robert unscrupulously appropri-
atesaplot of land, where he intendsto buildamod-
ern shopping centre. The only two obstacles in his

who wantsto take driving lessonsin the schoolde-
spite herfathersban. Although the story isset in a
ruthlessworld, it isintertwinedwith alot of warm
and interesting interpersonal relations with nu-
merous scenes from everyday life. While the plot

ZVONIMIR JURI (1971, Croatia), director and writer,
graduatedin lmandTVdirecting fromthe Acad-
emy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb (Croatia). He has
directed several documentaries, two shorts, and
twofeature lmsbasedonhisownscreenplays. The
Blacks (2009, co-directedby GoranDevi)received
twelve awards, most of them international (three
Grand Prix awards) and was the Croatian repre-
sentative forthe Academy AwardsforBest Foreign
Language Film2011.
At its heart, this is a lmabout the impossibility
of redemption for Ivo, a man who committed a
serious crime a long time ago. His guilt represents
a constant barrier to his rehabilitation and
restoration of normal life. It is also a story of the
societys refusal to accept convicted criminals; it
explores our collective refusal to allow themto
reintegrate. At the same time, however, it is also
about a society which can still muster courage and

In March 1961, Yugoslavia sold its secret space pro-
gramme to the US. Two months later Kennedy an-
nouncedthat the USAwouldgotothe Moon. This is an
urban myth that millions of people want to believe in.
In January 2012 the lmmakers visualised this
urban myth in ashort video that waspublishedon
YouTube. Aweek later, almost amillion people had
watched it and an enormous media buzz was gen-
erated. Most of the viewers actually believed that
the Yugoslav president Tito had saved USAs repu-
tation in the space race. This myth is explored in
the lmthrough the seniorengineerin the alleged
Yugoslav space programme. The story of the lm
isbasedandinspiredby numerousrealeventsand
facts. The space programme and the documentary
discourse are the narrative toolsrecounting asym-
bolicstory of the ColdWar. In thissense it isareal
story of manipulation, lies, dirty political games,
and media construction. However, the lms most
important message ishowsimilareventsstillhap-
pen today in the modern society and how terribly
easy it isto manipulate an audience.
IGA VIRC (Slovenia), director and producer, gradu-
ated fromAGRFT. He is an Academy Award nomi-
natedlmandtelevision directorforhisshort stu-
dent lmTrieste is Ours.
Virc has directed numerous commercials, docu-
mentary lmsandctionworks, forwhichhe hasre-
ceivedmany awards. He isexperiencedin the cross-
platformapproach, with some of hispreviousworks
going viral both nationally and internationally. His
worksare notable fortheirdramaticvisualstyle, use
of music to build tension, incorporating a detailed

Are the unsaid memories the very substance that
shapes us into what we really are?
The stories narrated by the lmbring together in-
dividuals all over the world, spanning over sixty
years and thus symbolically covering the approxi-
mate periodof asingle human life. Each of the sto-
riesisbasedon true accountsandevents, summed
up fromnewspaperarticles, statements, andmedia
announcements. Throughinternalmonologuesthe
collage makesup awhole which transcendsany in-
dividualstory.
The lmPerseverance ishomage to life at itstough-
est. The mosaic of fates presents the experience of
human life in allitsdepth of emotions, itssensual,
memory, and ideological wealth. It is a collage of
momentswe are unwilling orincapable to discuss,
a mosaic of memories and secrets we keep to our-
selves. It is a lm about the cacophony of reality,
where the tragic is contrasted with the banal, the
sublime with the profane, cruelwith beautiful, and
crowdedwith lonely.
Preservance tries to discuss all of this and by no
meanskeepsquiet about allof us, either.
MIHA KNIFIC(1976, Slovenia), directorandscreenwrit-
er, graduatedfromthe Academy of Fine ArtsinLju-
bljanaandpostgraduatedfromthe RoyalCollege of
Arts (Kungliga Konshgskolan) in Stockholm. In
2007 he stepped away from conceptual arts with
hisdirecting debut Let Me Sleep(orig. En Natt, fea-
ture, 2007) and presented himself as a lm direc-
torforthe rst time. Since then he hasremaineda
lmmaker. He mostly deals with peoples stories,
explores extreme situations, and is especially in-
terestedin the freedomthat these existentialsitu-
ations create in the situations that change indi-
viduals, theirattitudesto the world, andthe world
in itself. Persistence is his second feature. Selected

Na vsakdan (orig. Naa svakidanjica), feature, shooting date:

The year is 2010. The Sui family lives the life of
ordinary Bosnians:fatherMuhamed(64)worksfor
arespectable company, while motherMarija(63)is
retired. Their son Saa (38) lives with his parents
having spent the war in the Army of Bosnia and
Herzegovina. He had never got over his wartime
love ajournalist Nina, who hadinfectedhimwith
HepatitisC. Hishealthhasbeenpermanently dam-
aged. Saas sister Senada (40) lives in Ljubljana,
andthroughout the lmshe isjust avoice overthe
phone, her advice from far away occasionally irri-
tating. Their lives begin to disintegrate with Mu-
hameds dissatisfaction with the sale of his com-
pany at the stock exchange, Saas irresponsible
attitude towards his job and family, and Marijas
discovery that she has breast cancer. When prob-
lems start to pile up, Muhamed and Saa realise
that family iswhat really matters, andthat it isthe
last refuge one can hope to have.
The project was a part of CineLink market at the
Sarajevo FF2010andhasreceivedthe Internation-
alRelationsArte Prize.
INES TANOVI(BosniaandHerzegovina), directorand
screenwriter, graduated fromthe Academy of Per-
forming Arts in Sarajevo, attended the Berlinale
Talent Campus in 2006. Her project Decision was
selected for the Berlin Today Award 2011. She was
rewarded with the Big Stamp for Best Film in the
Regional Competition Program at ZagrebDox In-
ternational Documentary FF 2012. The omnibus
Some Other Stories (Bosnian and Herzegovian-
Serbian-Macedonian-Slovenian-Croatian-Irish
coproduction, supported by Eurimages) has been
invitedto more than 35 internationallmfestivals

PROJECT CANCER

For a whole year from November to Novem-
ber the camera follows Ulay, a conceptual art-
ist from Amsterdam. Ulay is one of pioneers
of body art, performance art and polaroid art,
but he is most famous for his longterm collabo-
ration with Marina Abramovi and their per-
formances that have achieved iconic status.
In 2009 Ulay moved to Ljubljana. When talks and
plans with regard to the lm were already under-
way, Ulay was diagnosed with cancer, and every-
thing changed. The rst scenes were shot in No-
vember 2011 at the Ljubljana Institute of Oncology,
where Ulay underwent chemotherapy. When his
health improved slightly, he decided to visit his
friends around the world and the camera followed
himon this so-called farewell journey: to Berlin for
the premiere of Marinas lm, then to New York,
and nally to his beloved Amsterdam. Ulay treated
his illness as thebiggest andmost important project
of his life, hence the title of the lm: Project Cancer.

DAMJAN KOZOLE (1964, Slovenia) director and screen-
writer, member of the European Film Academy,
and co-founder of Emotionlm production com-
pany. He has been active on the Slovenian and in-
ternational lmscene for more than 20 years. His
features and feature documentaries have been
screenedat overahundredinternationallmfesti-
valsandreceivedover20awardsandacknowledge-
ments.

In 1971 the 28 year-old K.G. took his camera, trav-
elled across Vojvodina (at that time part of Yugo-
slavia), and shot an unusual road trip lm I Have
a House (Imamjednu kuu). Only fragmentsof this
lm have been preserved to this day. Forty years
later another camera treads the same path, recon-
structing andimagining the originaljourney.

aftermath of the Yugoslav wars. Yet more andmore

The documentary The Elderly Parasite is the work
of Janez Burger, a director liked by the critics as
well as viewers. He and the crew of TV Slovenija
lmedMarko Brecelj during workdaystowardsthe
endof 2012, andit took the directorandthe clever
Czech editorvirtuoso MiloKalusek three months
to assemble theirwork. The lmmakershadavast
quantityof archiveshotsmadebytheAssociationof
the Friendsof Moderate Progressat theirdisposal,
and the statements by the prominent members of
the SlovenianorpostYugoslav culturalandpopular
scene providedicing onthe cake. The lmtakesthe
general public opinion and expectations into ac-
count rather than the selmage and life choices of
the person it portrays. However, it isundoubtedly a
credible, witty and almost humanised presenta-
tion of adifcult man who hasfrequently managed
to divide the publicwith hissoft terrorismin the
last decades, also outside the borders of our state
selfsufciency. The lm was completed with de-
cient funds, but it neverthelessreceived(so far)the
awards of the expert juries in Paklenica (Croatia)
andPortoro (Slovenija)in autumn 2013.
JANEZ BURGER (1965, Slovenia), director and screen-
writer, graduated in lm and TV directing from
FAMU, Prague (Czech Republic). His lms are al-
ways welcome at prominent lm festivals all over
the world, where they often receive awards. He
livesandworksin Ljubljana.

The Family followsMatej (14-21 yearsold)overthe
course of sevenyears. At the age of 14he alreadyhad
to take care of hismentally challengedparentsand
his brother, born with the Down syndrome. Matej
spent his youth isolated from his peers and lost in
virtualreality, trying to escape hisproblems. Asat
the age of 20 he became a father himself, it seems
he hadbeen able to transcendthe life patternsand
create his own family with his girlfriend and their
daughter. But this idyllic life had only lasted two
months, until Barbara left him. Currently they
are ghting over the custody of their daughter
ROK BIEK (1985, Slovenia), director and producer,

graduated from the AGRFT. He has won awards
at various festivals for his distinctive and original
approach in hisstudent lmsaswellashisfeature
debut Class Enemy, which haditsworldpremiere at
the 28

Home: one of the shortest words describing the
feeling of homeliness. Home is the centre, every-
day haven, sometimes a temple of small habits.
The documentary lm with this title focuses on
the very opposite of these pleasant connotations.
The home forworkersby the railroadtrack isonly
called that. It is mostly occupied by construction
workerswhohadworkedinthe bankrupt construc-
tioncompanies. They live orlingeronanalmost in-
visible line, bordering grey economy and illegality
at its dangerous side. The building is also home to
a large concentration of personal crises and desti-
nies written by the economic crisis. The Bosnian
workerswhohadbuilt Sloveniainthe yearsof pros-
perity are now handicapped or difcult to employ.
Even though they live at the socialbottomwithout
any rights or precisely because of it they are a
telling reection of what goes on in the Slovenian
society. The lm follows their everyday bachelor
lives in the bleak threebed rooms with joint bath-
rooms, andpresentstheiroutlook on the decline of
Sloveniaasamodelregionaleconomicforce.
METOD PEVEC (1958, Slovenia), director and screen-
writer, writer/novelist andactor. Before andduring
his studies of philosophy and comparative litera-
ture, in the 1970s and 1980s, he starred in several
Slovenian and Yugoslav feature lms and TV se-
ries. Among them, several collaborations with the
SerbiandirectorivojinPavloviwere the most im-
portant, including the Slovenian feature lmFare-
well in the Next War (1981). Pevec has also written
severalnovelsandacollection of short stories.
