The Sun
For most people, the Fourth of
July weekend involves barbecues,
parades and fireworks, but for
one soldier who recently re-
turned home from Afghanistan,
his weekend included a little
something extra.
On the morning of July 5, Unit-
ed States Army Sgt. Robert St.
John, a Tabernacle resident and
graduate of the Shawnee High
School class of 1996, was sur-
prised with an event in his honor
where hundreds of people filled
the stadium at his alma mater to
thank him for his military serv-
ice and cheer his return home as
if he were a rock star.
St. John was escorted to
Shawnee by The Warriors Watch
Riders, a troop support group of
motorcycle enthusiasts, and upon
his arrival, he was greeted by the
waving flags and blaring sirens
from hundreds of friends, family,
police, fire and rescue depart-
ments. Once inside the stadium,
he was presented with proclama-
tions from several local officials.
St. John said he was complete-
ly surprised by the event.
Totally blown away, would
have never expected this, would
have never expected to come back
to this high school, St John said.
The event was planned by the
Marlton-based charity Operation
Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey,
which in addition to planning
welcome home events also col-
lects donations for care packages
for the men and women serving
overseas in the armed forces.
St. John and those he served
with in Afghanistan had been re-
cipients of OYRSJ care packages,
and he thanked OYRSJ President
Dave Silver for everything the
group sent, which ended up being
so generous that it was more than
St. John and those he served with
could use.
Id rather have too much than
not enough, because there are
people out there that dont get
mail at all because theyre too far
away, St. John said. So what we
would do is we would take the
care packages that we got and we
would send them out there our-
selves. So I thank you all for the
donations. Nothing goes to waste
over there with us.
St. John also thanked the com-
munity and his family for their
support. In particular, he thanked
his wife Christine, who as an
OYRSJ member was a big part in
planning the event.
For a surprise of his own, St.
John stood in front of the crowd
and presented his wife with a cer-
tificate and coin honoring her for
displaying the finest qualities of
an army wife, such as loyalty, re-
spect, integrity and personal
courage.
Its just so cool, Christine
said. Hes so thoughtful and very
appreciative and Ive just been
blown away by all of it.
St. John had also surprised his
wife a few days earlier by not
telling her exactly when he was
leaving his base to come home.
I was sitting on the deck and
he came around the corner play-
ing our wedding song with a big
bouquet of flowers, Christine
said. It was awesome, but I got
him back.
Silver told St. John and his
wife that hes planned hundreds
of events with OYRSJ, but with
the two of them trying to surprise
the other, he had never been more
excited and stressed at the same
time.
I felt like a double agent talk-
ing out of both sides of my mouth
where I almost got conversations
mixed up, forgot who I was talk-
ing to, forgot what I said so I
just want to let you know that I
got a lot more gray hairs because
of the two of you, but its worth
it, Silver said.

I
ts hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-to-
school advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school cover-
age in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were ask-
ing that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of
questions for school leaders about the
new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2014-15 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can
pass along to you.
Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about re-
pairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.
Ready for school?
Of course youre not, but theres no better time to prepare than now
Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to
ask them questions about the upcoming
school year. So whats on your mind?
Send us your questions, and well do our
best to get answers.
Board wants to increase building size limitation
BY MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The Medford Township planning board
took the next steps to revising zoning regu-
lations for the Route 70 corridor as a sub-
committee submitted its recommendations
during a special meeting last week.
There were numerous recommenda-
tions, but among them was a change to in-
crease the size of commercial buildings up
to 100,000 square feet and buildings for
medical and industrial use to 120,000
square feet. This is a large increase from
the 35,000 square-foot limitation currently
in place.
Scott Taylor, the Medford township plan-
ner, said the township has numerous build-
ings greater than 35,000 square feet. Those
buildings, which include Sharps Run Plaza
and ShopRite, were constructed prior to
the limitation being put into place. The
35,000 square-foot limitation was originally
put into place to prevent the development
of big box retailers.
That would make those sites that were
non-conforming in conformance in regard
to building size, Taylor said of the pro-
posed change.
In addition to non-conforming buildings,
it is still possible for multiple buildings
under 35,000 square feet to be constructed
on one property, rendering the restriction
somewhat moot.
Resident Jerry Gray was not thrilled
about the proposed change.
He spoke out against development along
Route 70 during the first meeting in Janu-
ary and felt the subcommittee's proposed
changes to building size contradicted one
please see RESIDENT, page 7
of its goals about preserving the
area's character.
I don't know how putting up
quadruple the retail space is
going to keep the character of
Medford, he said.
Gray also had concerns about
the impact new development may
have on traffic.
He said traffic already backs
up on Route 70 in Medford, and
adding larger commercial build-
ings could cause more conges-
tion.
On every side road, there's
going to be additional traffic, he
said.
The subcommittee did an
analysis of the traffic impact new
development may have and said
there would not be a significant
difference if the proposed
changes were put into place.
Instead of one larger build-
ing, our zoning ordinance allows
for separate smaller buildings,
Taylor said. There's no real
trade-off.
Thee state Department of
Transportation does not plan to
add lanes to Route 70 in the fore-
seeable future.
Taylor said additional lanes
may actually impact development
in a negative way and referenced
shopping centers such as Tri-
Towne Plaza and Evesham Town-
ship as an example.
Resident Jeffrey Lucas echoed
the planning board's response,
saying additional commercial de-
velopment would add tax ratables
to the township without too many
negative impacts.
There are very good ratables
in large buildings that don't nega-
tively impact traffic, he said.
We already have buildings that
are over 100,000 square feet.
Numerous other recommenda-
tions were also discussed, includ-
ing reducing the buffer and set-
back regulations and changes to
improve sewer capacity through
the corridor.
The planning board's next step
is to vote to send the draft plan to
township council, which will then
review the plan.
Planning board chair Jack
Hartwig said there will be minor
edits made to the plan and anoth-
er public hearing will be held at a
meeting on July 23.
The board is expected to vote
on the plan during that meeting.

The following information was
provided by the Medford Town-
ship Police Department.
Medford Township Police initi-
ated a six-month-long investiga-
tion pertaining to illegal activi-
ties at a residence on Tallowood
Drive in the Tamarac Develop-
ment. Through the course of the
investigation, it was determined
that the residence was being used
by several subjects for the pur-
pose of engaging in prostitution
and the use of illegal drugs.
In February, Medford Police
made their first arrest of an occu-
pant from the Tallowood home,
after identifying a 36-year-old
male from Camden. He was ar-
rested on an outstanding "escape"
warrant and turned over to the
Gloucester County Sheriff s De-
partment. He was also charged
impersonation, theft and hinder-
ing his apprehension after he pro-
vided law enforcement with a
false name.During the investiga-
tion, a vehicle registered to an oc-
cupant of this residence was in-
volved in a motor vehicle crash in
Evesham Township in which the
occupants fled the scene. It was
later determined that the vehicle,
along with other items, had been
stolen from the Medford home.
In April, Medford detectives is-
sued arrest warrants for a 27-
year-old female from Bellmawr
and a 38-year-old male from
Lawnside. The woman was
charged with burglary, motor ve-
hicle theft, prostitution offenses
and possession of a hypodermic
syringe and the man with burgla-
ry, motor vehicle theft, prostitu-
tion offenses and possession of
drug paraphernalia. The woman
was arrested with the assistance
of Gloucester Township Police on
April 18 and lodged in the
Burlington County Jail in lieu of
$25,000 full cash bail. In June, the
man was arrested by Camden
Metro Police and transferred to
the Burlington County Jail in lieu
of $25,000 full cash bail. A fourth
suspect, a 49-year-old female from
Medford, was arrested for prosti-
tution offenses and maintaining a
nuisance.
On July 3, Medford Police were
dispatched to a motor vehicle
crash on Route 70 in the area of
Medford Plaza. Upon arrival, it
was determined that a vehicle
was waiting to make a left turn
into the Medford Plaza and the
driver, a 52-year-old male from
Lanoka Harbor, failed to negoti-
ate around the stopped vehicle,
striking it in the rear. He was
treated on scene and transported
to Virtua Hospital in Mt Holly.
On July 7 at 1:15 p.m., Medford
Police conducted a motor vehicle
stop on a 2002 Buick that a 20-
year-old male from Willingboro
was driving in the area of Tom-
linson Mill Road and Taunton
Boulevard for a speeding viola-
tion. While speaking to him, po-
lice observed a glass jar contain-
ing marijuana in the drivers side
front door panel. Subsequent in-
vestigation revealed that the driv-
er was in possession of less than
50 grams of marijuana and drug
paraphernalia. He was charged
with possession of marijuana,
possession of drug parapherna-
lia, possession of marijuana in a
motor vehicle and speeding. He
was released pending court.
