Kingsbury Sports Partnership celebrates Commonwealth Games in style

On 23 June, 700 primary school pupils took part in a
special event at Kingsbury to celebrate the Glasgow
Games and National School Sport Week. Supported by
100 secondary school leaders from Kingsbury and
across the Partnership, the pupils took part in an
Opening Ceremony before competing in a range of
sports including handball, fencing, seated volleyball,
decathlon and Tri Golf.

Medals were given out by Ms ODriscoll and Councillor
Anita Ward before the day concluded with a
spectacular Closing Ceremony.

Kingsbury School reporters turned the tables by
interviewing crews from BBC Midlands Today and
Newsround who were there to film the event!

Olympic silver medalist and Youth Sport Trust Ambassador Gail
Emms, and Commonwealth gold medalist Kelly Sotherton were
among the sporting stars at the event and offered support to
those taking part in the day.

The Commonwealth theme continued with a three day baton
relay between the 20 participating schools. Abbey Catholic,
Marsh Hill and Court Farm Primary schools were supported by
Sustrans to do their
leg of the relay by
pedal power the
Partnership are
keen to promote
cycling. Abbey
Headteacher Mrs
Tallon summed up the event:
It was a superbly well organised event involving children from
across the local community. Abbey Catholic Primary School felt
very proud to be working alongside all the other schools in the
Kingsbury School Sports Partnership. The range of sporting
activities was fantastic and the secondary students leading the
activities were not only a credit to their schools and families but
excellent role models to their primary school partners.

The event was the culmination of many months work but the young people taking part were the real stars of
the show with some outstanding performances. It has been a pleasure to be involved with the event and
National School Sport Week; if a big event like this helps to inspire young
people it makes all the hard work worthwhile! Miss Mapp

Duke of Edinburgh Award

After working hard to complete volunteering opportunities, gain new skills
and trying new sports, our departing Year 11 students completed their
practice expedition for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award at Beaudesert
recently. All participants had a great time, learning skills in map reading,
camp craft and navigating terrain. They will be completing their assessed
expedition this month. If you're ambitious, committed, self-driven and want
to try something different then see Miss Masters or have a look at the DofE
display near room 16 for more information.

House competition

Congratulations to Ravenhill House who won
Kingsbury's first ever House Competition: the
Penalty Shoot Out! They pulled together an
amazing team to win with 100 points. Second were
Chamberlain with 80 Points, third: Burkitt (60),
fourth: Wilberforce (40) and in fifth place Tolkien
(20). Well done to all the participants and thank you
to the students and staff who came along to cheer
on their House, and to the PE team for hosting the
event.

Kingsbury students remember the fallen

Students have been taking part in a range of activities to mark the Centenary of the
First World War. A visit to the national Memorial Arboretum on 23rd June was
thought provoking and emotional; in particular, the Shot at Dawn memorial
(pictured) had a great impact. 306 British and Commonwealth soldiers were shot for
desertion and cowardice during WW1 but today it is recognised that many were
under age, and suffering from shell
shock, now known as post-
traumatic stress disorder.

Students gained a greater insight and understanding of the
events of the First World War, especially from the
perspective of soldiers and their families. They learnt more
about what the poppy symbolises and the meaning of
wearing it. The visit ended in a service of remembrance
where the students collectively read a poem and observed
a minutes silence for all the servicemen and women who
had lost their lives.

At school, students in Design and Technology lessons
have been taking part in a cross curricular project, from
exploring war time cookery and recipes, to making medals,
poppies, wartime posters and leaflets. Miss Thom

History students have sown Flanders poppy seeds,
donated by the Royal British Legion and Halls
Garden Centre in Sutton Coldfield. The seeds are
part of the British Legions campaign to ensure that
young people, irrespective of religious or political
views, can develop a greater understanding of the
First World War and can actively participate in
Remembrance activities and help shape a more
peaceful future. Although the 4th August 100th
anniversary of the outbreak of the war is during the
school holidays, it is hoped that the poppies will be
in bloom when students return to school in
September. Mr M Hussain.

Learning from the real world

Budding film makers at Kingsbury have been working with a local media expert to create their own videos.
John Northam, owner of Dayoutphotography.co.uk provides a range of multimedia services including film,
photography, website and design. He worked with Year 11 students studying Creative Media, supporting
them to complete their coursework to create a short promotional film for the school. This involved each
student taking part in filming and editing, interviewing members of staff and students, shooting cutaways to
bring into the edit, and learning how to edit the footage to get the best out of their filming.

Its been a challenging but fun experience said John: The students have been working hard in an area
that I believe has the potential to draw out a great amount of creativity from them. The project provides a
great teaching tool for team work and
planning. I hope the students take
something away with them that they can
use in a future course or career.

We really appreciate Johns support; its
been amazing to have someone
prepared to give their time to
demonstrate how what students are
learning relates to the real world.

Kingsbury students demonstrate their business skills

The Teenpreneur Challenge on Saturday 28th June was a one day interactive event consisting of
workshops designed to equip young people with the tools to build their confidence whilst developing their
self leadership, creative and innovative skills and abilities. Students from Kingsbury school and Sports
College were a part of the winning team.

After the event, host Errol Lawson from Emerge Leadership UK wrote to Ms ODriscoll to praise our
students:

The testimonies we have had back from the young
people have been great. I would like to
congratulate the students from Kingsbury School
for their outstanding contributions; we were
impressed by their creativity, team working skills
and business savvy.

Thank you to Miss Fisher for organizing the
students and enabling them to have the
opportunity.
