 I. INTRODUCTIONA.Brief DescriptionIschemic
ischemic heart disease
(IHD), or
myocardial ischemia
, is a diseasecharacterized by reduced blood supply to the heart muscle, usually due to coronary arterydisease (atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries). Its risk increases with age, smoking, hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol levels), diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure)and is more common in men and those who have close relatives with ischemic heart disease.Myocardial ischemia is a disorder that is usually caused by a critical coronary arteryobstruction, which is also known as atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is the
leading cause of death worldwide, and it is the second most common cause of emergencydepartment visits in the United States. More than $140 billion are spent each year for thediagnosis and management of CAD.
Diagnosing myocardial ischemia prior to a heart attack is important because ischemicheart disease is responsible for approximately 14% of all deaths worldwide. Approximately 1.5million Americans will have a heart attack this year as a result of myocardial ischemia; about500,000 of those will be fatal.Angina occurs more frequently in women than in men, and in blacks and Hispanics morethan in whites. It also occurs more frequently as people age--25% of women over the age of 85and 27% of men who are 80-84 years old have angina.Number one killer in the United States and worldwide. Every minute, an American diesof coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease afflicts over 13 million Americans.
