 Augmentedreality(AR)isatermandapplicationthathasbeenaroundsincethe1990s.Todate,ithasmainlybeenusedbyengineersandresearcherstosupplementtheirworkandinverysimplemannersinthevisualworldforconsumers.However,thathasstartedtochangewiththemainstreamingofwebcamsandsmartphonecamerasthatallowindividualstounlockARcontentandprovideathree-dimensionalexperiencefortheuser,bringingtherealanddigitalworldstogether.
Earlier this year, Doritos introduced aline of Late Night chips. Topromotethe chipsa limited-edition AR symbolwas printed on the back of the LateNight chip bag. Users visited aspecialDoritos Late Night Web site,lined up the symbol with theirwebcam and unlocked a never-before-released song and video frompopular pop-punk band Blink-182. Another cool ARapplication isfrom Zugara,whereonlineshoppers can tryclothes onbeforethey buy them.For the 2009 holiday season,The Home Depot has released aspecial AR gift card. When linedup with a webcam, the cardshows a continuous stream ofpossible gifts and saves the giftsin a special section of the Website for further viewing andinformation.There really seems to be no limit to the potentialof AR. I liked it a lot. Considering that Italy is always 2/3 years later in developing trends, except from the 2D Barcode, I'm expecting them to reach the mainstream in 2012/2013.
