Where is Antarctica located?
l Located on the southern latitudes of the Earth, Antarctica is
home to the South Pole.

lA map of Antarctica reveals this continent to be surrounded


by the Southern Ocean and divided in half by the
Transantarctic Mountains.

l Being the coldest, driest and windiest on average of all the


continents, Antarctica does not have any permanent
human residents
Climate…
l The climate of Antarctica is the coldest on earth, the lowest
temperature ever recorded on earth being -128.6!

l It is also extremely dry, with an average of only 6.5 inches of


precipitation per year.

l Most of Antarctica has an ice cap climate.


Waterways.
l Because Antarctica is a "polar" region, there is no
precipitation.

l it has no lakes or rivers and is in fact the driest continent.

l
People…
l About 1000 in the winter and like 4000 in the summer.

l They all have to always wear warm clothing because the


weather is always cold through out the whole year.

l Not many people live there but people do go to visit.

l
Economy….
l No economic activity is conducted at present in Antarctica,
except for fishing off the coast and small-scaled tourism,
both based abroad.

l Antarctica is one and a half times the size of the United
States.

l The temperature in Antarctica almost always remains below


freezing.

l Antarctica holds roughly one third of all the fresh water on


Earth.

l No trees grow on Antarctica.

l Antarcticais the highest, driest, windiest, emptiest, coldest


place on earth.

lTheseasons in Antarctica are the
opposite of the seasons in the
Northern hemisphere--summer is
October through February. Winter is
March through September.
