Public Narrative Project
One ambitious project thatthe deputations will be bringing back is the acilitationo a church wide project to empower our own missionstorytelling. In the parlance o the project, “the story o why you’ve been called to your own mission (story o sel), why we as a community are called (story o us),and the urgency o challenge that conronts us with thedemand or action now (story o now).” For many o us,speaking about such personal moments, succinctly, is nota comortable or intuitive process. This project imag-ines encouraging communication and leadership skillsto help us retell our stories, not only to our sisters andbrothers in Christ, but to a less amiliar world. The Presiding Bishop and President o the Houseo Deputies approached Marshall Ganz about imagininghis leadership workshop tools in the context o the Epis-copal Church. Some have dismissed him as just anotherivy tower academician, but Ganz, son o a rabbi, has abackstory. Ater one year in college he was so touchedby the civil rights movement, he dropped out in 1964to register black voters in Mississippi. He continued work as a community organizer with the United Farm Workers and other groups or 28 years, beore returningto Harvard. Ganz is now a lecturer in public policy atHarvard’s Kennedy School. The convention deputations had our sessions withGanz, all o which were captured on video. At the timeo this writing the videos are available on TEC’s website,in addition to workshop teaching materials and projectoverview. For those that eel the materials are a littleormulaic, Ganz reminded us in the sessions that whenGod inspired the Israelites he didn’t oer a vague hopeo better days. He described the land o milk and honey and the roadmap to get there.

Herman of Alaska (d. Dec. 13, 1837)A laymonk and hermit in Russia, Herman wassent with others to found an Orthodoxmission in the Aleutian islands. But theothers died or returned to Russia. Her-man continued the work alone, educatingthe native peoples and feeding and cloth-ing orphans. His own life was as asceticas that of the desert fathers, but he wasloving and generous to everyone else andoften interceded with the government forthe Aleut who called him “Apa” [“grand-father”]. He fed the animals around him, even the bears, from his own hands, andsometimes sang the liturgy to them.
