His managerial resume includes 3 seasons at short-season Eugene (2003-05), 3 seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02).
