dskeeters nd bees
Read out loud. You'll get it right
on your second or third try...
twonce pohna toime
twas skeeters roamed free
tweren't no crops
'n tweren't no bee
skeeters poll-in-oi-ted
da' few nay-tive fowers
'n suckt up t'blood
as d' woild-life cowers
tweren't much here
but dey awwll lived good
cuz dey wozn't jealous
'n no one had good food
den come t'bees
'n t'swamps fll' in
'n t'new crops grew
needin' poll-in-ay-shun
a lot more horses
meant a lot more blood
so all lived better
'til d'fsh ran owt
wit' all dat land
growin' crops not critter
'n'deir swamps flled in
some skeeters got bitter
"dem bees took our jobs
polloinatin' dem crops
dem horses 's gone
so we got less blood"
"widout d'fsh dere's
fewer out 'n boats
'n we can't get dem
'cuz dey got good coats"
dey had much more
dan dey had in d'day
yet so many resented
d' "Come-From-Away"
dem bees, dey said,
made dem look like crud:
"them workin' so hard,
'n suckin' no blood"
"and dem humans", said dey,
"growin' strange new crops
from Spain and Japan
which bees like but we do not"
d' humans moved on
'n few played skeeter
dey were mostly like d'bees
or t'seal or t'beaver
quite a few adapted
farmin' eels or scallop
sellin' 'em to Tokyo
fore a fat cash wallop
quite a few more
realized dey woz rich
dem "weeds" in t'garden
bein' herbs to cook with
dere was stuf t'eat
dat never dey dreamed
fried dandelion fowers
'n fresh beach greens
"we's richer dan we were
in d'Bluenose I days
'n'even three-ton rudders
won't make us lose our way"
even dem what chose
to abandon deir homes
could get out in style
'cuz of C-F-A loans
so we kept just d'best
dem wit' helpin' hands
'n lost d'disgruntled
t' far west wastelands
but still a few
took deir cue from a skeeter
'n not from d'bee
'n not from d'beaver
just a few skeeters lef
talkin' gossip 'n trash
resentin' dem folks
wot happened here last
now y'kin choose t'be a bee
or choose t'be a beaver
y'kin choose t'be an otter
or t'be none neither
but if y'cain't stop trashin'
folks just for where they're from
den yer still playin' skeeter
so expect d' slap-'n'-run!

I remember seeing these handmade
shoes in a crafer's booth at
Northern Lights Festival Boreal,
Sudbury Ontario in 1982 (or
maybe '83) and I had to have them.
Tey were the most lovely pair of
shoes I had ever seenjust my
kind of footwear. More than 30
years ago, it's hard to remember
the exact date or even to be sure of
the crafsperson, afer all this time.
However, a friend of mine recently
told me she is sure that they were
made by Barbara Holzmark of
Nova Scotia because she bought
(and still has) a pair of her shoes
too. And her memory is better than
mine.
Tese shoes were worn for a few
years almost daily and eventually
I wore the soles very thin and
decided to retire them before I put
a hole right through but never to
throw them away. I thought, some
day I will have them re-soled. I
haven't, kept them in a box in my
closet until recently.
On the occaision of my recent
birthday, my friend (with Barbara's
shoes and the good memory)
posted a Facebook photo of me at
that 1980s festival wearing those
shoes. Tat got us talking about
them and because I was in the
process of moving to Florida at the
time, I found them as I was packing
up all my worldly treasures.
I took them out and tried them
on again. Tey still ft and still
feel as good as I rememberthat
smooth, sof feeling, as if you really
have nothing on your feetonly
better!
Te soles will still need some
help if I want to wear them again
(and I do!) and I hear there's a
good leather repair crafsman in
my new hometown who I plan to
recruit for this task soon. Tere is
a little wear on the embroidery but
not so noticeable that it matters.
I still love these shoes and feel 30
years younger when I put them on.
Maybe there is magic in them! I
tried to fnd a contact for Barbara
to thank her for her wonderful
crafsmanship but I haven't had
any luck. By sharing my story with
the Monitor, I hope she sees it and
fnds out where her creation ended
up, and continues to live. I'm sure
it would bring a smile and the
rewarding feeling that all artisans
appreciate.

Fun & Games
Well, my dear friends and
oceanside dwellers.. It's time again
for summer funas soon as we get
out of the fog...
I'm sitting down, always a safe
move, to be close to the earthmy
fave: beachsand. It's warmed by
the sun's unsure rays, fogbound,
peaking through. Chirping flling
the air from all sides...birds don't
care a wit, they just chirp and sing,
whatever may be happening on
earth. True artists at life.
Gazing across the foggy waves,
soccer plays on the mind's screen.
World Championship. You know,
it's one of the truly loved world
sports, played by every poor kid,
or rich, on 80 % of the globe. Te
love of the masses. A great game.
As is the way of the 1%, however,
like FIFA Inc., they use it for
billions of proft. And how. Turning
it against poor people, forced en
mass out of their homes to make
way for stadiums. Workers unpaid
and killed on unsafe construction
sites. Police forces in Brazil are
turned into military death squads,
occupying favelas (ghettos) with
heavy weapons, drones, even tanks.
All paid by the people who
get hit with it. And it stays that
wayafer the 'war' is over. 'Soccer'
changed their lives for worse.
Toughluck for the people. Well,
it's a sign of these times, I'm
afraid unbelievable moves against
poor(er) people (us) are seen
everywhere. With amazing balls,
the worlds richest CEOs are trying
to get a separate universe for
themselves in secret deals called
'Trade Agreements". "Hey, that's
not bad, eh?" Look again, m'dear.
Plans are underway to have a
private world court for themselves,
stafed with 9 of their own lawyers!
Trans-Pacifc Partnership (TPP).
Outside the common justice
system for the rest of us. No
appeals possible. And even nations
would have to knuckle under and
pay, if the corps claim 'potential
loss of proft'like, hey, I could've
made billions with my poison,
if you didn't interfere with your
health laws, so pay me, or else.
NAFTA is a tiny version of it, and
we know how bad that went in the
last twenty years.
Apropos drones: Did you know
they're we help make them in
Lunenburg. Finally, some chiefs
woke up, and warn the world: Hey,
what if all countries start this crap
of drone murder, wouldn't we have
a mess?? I'm gonna get one, too...
hahaha, but a small, tiny one with
a camera, no bombsno,no,no.
So I can spy on my girlfriend...just
kiddin, babe!)
Well, you can see, I just have
a dirty mind, somehow...always
something to yap about, but I
can't fnd much going in the right
direction on the world scene
of leadersif it weren't for the
amazing, true hearts of the '99%'
people everywherelike AVAAZ.

give up, I say. My motto: Dancing
