Chapter One
Roy stirred awake. Monday had barely dawned
but he could hardly wait to get to the office and start
another week of work.
He reached over, unplugged his phone and
glanced at the morning news headline: Billions Lost
as Stock Crash.
Like a bolt of lightning he was out of bed.
Allison, his wife, asked groggily, What happened?
Nothing, Roy said, go back to sleep.
He was out of the bedroom before she had a
chance to inquire further.
He went directly to the family room and turned
on the television to Fox Business. Their faces were
dour, the numbers scrolling across the bottom of the
screen mind-boggling. A broad meltdown that had
begun overnight in Asia and spread to Europe was
now ravaging Wall Street.
At a commercial break Roy grabbed sweet bread
and milk from the kitchen and returned to watch the

President announce that economic fundamentals were
sound and there was no reason to panic.
At the next commercial break Roy called his
brother, Michael. Are you watching the news?
Im not even up yet, Michael answered still
half asleep.
Roy almost shouted, well get up and turn on the
news. The markets are in free fall.
Michael wasnt interested. Im going back to
sleep. Lets talk about this at the office later. He
hung up.
Roy stared at his phone in disbelief for a moment
before turning off the television and heading to
shower and dress.
Before leaving for the office he kissed his wife
and peeked in on each his three children, all still
sound asleep and blissfully unaware of the unfolding
calamity.
