Ex:VII Give Reasons:
1. Mushrooms and moulds cannot prepare their own food because they do not contain
chlorophyll.
2. A yellow leaf cannot make food because it does not contain green pigment called
chlorophyll.
3. Leaves of green plants are called food factories because leaves prepare food for the
plants.
4. Green leaves are green in colour because they contain chlorophyll.
5. The leaves of cactus and prickly pear are reduced to spines because it helps to
conserve water and keep away animals.
6.Mangroves grow in marshy areas-because these plants have special breathing roots that
come out of the soil.
7.We use spices and condiments in cooking because they add flavor and taste to our food.
8.Trees are our friends, because they give us many useful things like food, clean air, rain,
wood, medicines , clothes etc.., without which we would not be able to survive.
EX:VIII Answer in short:
1. What is the function of leaves?
Ans:The leaves carry out the process of photosynthesis in a plant. They take in carbon di
oxide gas from the air and light energy from the sun to make food.
2. Name the different parts of a plant in which food is stored?
Ans:Leaf, stem, roots, fruits and seeds.
3. How do stomata help the plants?
Ans:Stomata helps in exchange of gases between the plants and atmosphere
4. Why do the plants of a cold region have pointed leaves ?
Ans:The plants of a cold region have pointed leaves to prevent the water or snow from
standing on it.
5. How does the cactus survive in the desert ?
Ans: The leaves of the cactus are reduced to spines that help them to conserve water and
keep away animals. The green and fleshy stem contains chlorophyll and makes food. In
this way, the cactus survives in the desert.
6. Why do floating plants have air spaces in their roots ,stems and leaves ?
Ans: Floating plants have air spaces in their roots , stems and leaves these help the plants
to float.
7. What are insectivorous plants? Give three examples ?
Ans:Plants that eat insects are called insectivorous plants. Eg:Pitcher plant, Venus flytrap
plant and sundew plant.
8. Name the four types of teeth ?
Ans: Four types of teeth are:-
1.Incisors
2.canines
3.premolars
4.molars
9. How are teeth important to us ?
Ans: We use our teeth to chew food. This helps us to digest it properly. Teeth also play
on important role in the personality of a person. Thus, teeth are important to us.
10.Which food items do we get from plants?
Ans: we get cereals , pulses, vegetables, fruits, edible oil, jiggery, sugar, spices etc., from
plants.
11.What is the contribution of vegetation in the preservation of environment?
Ans:The contribution of vegetation in the preservation of environment are 1. It helps animals,
birds and all of us to survive 2. It prevents soil erosion.
EX-IX ANSWER IN DETAIL
1.Write four uses of vegetation .
Ans:Four uses of vegetation are 1.plants give us food such as fruits , tea, coffee, vetables ,
pulses, cereals etc., 2. Different fibres to make cloth. 3. We get medicines from tulsi, neem etc.,
4. They give us oxygen to breathe 5. Trunk of trees like sal, teak give wood to make furniture,
door, windows etc.,
2.What care should be taken to nurture young and tender plants?
Ans: 1. We should remove unwanted grass and vegetation that grows near useful vegetation 2.
Shallow pits should be dug around these plants to provide manure and water regularly.
3. How do plants support life?
Ans: All the animals animals depend on plants directly or indirectly for their food, shelter and
other needs. We breathe in oxygen and wear the clothes given by plants. So, plants are the basic
need to support life.
4.How are floating plants different from the fixed plants?
Ans:Floating plants: They have swollen leaf stalks filled with air to float.
Fixed plants: They have roots fixed to the soil under water . They have leaves with long stalks
to float on the surface of water. The long and wax coated leaves keep water out. They have
stomata only on the upper surface.
5.What is tooth decay?
Ans: When we eat food tiny bits of food are not removed they invite bacteria. Bacteria can
change the sugar present in the food particles into an acid. This acid dissolves the enamel of a
tooth and causes a small hole called cavity. It causes the tooth decay.
6.How should you take care of your teeth?
Ans:To take care of our teeth we must do the follow
1. Teeth should be cleaned properly after every meal.
2. Avoid having food containing sugar.
3. Get the teeth checked regularly by a dentist.
4. Brush the teeth in the morning and at night.

7.Explain a structure of a tooth?
Ans: Each tooth has a crown and a root . The crown is the part we can see above the gums. The
root is present in the gums . A tooth is made up of a tough material called dentine. In the crown,
the dentine is covered by enamel.
8.What are microbes? How are some of them useful to us?
Ans: Microbes are tiny living things. Disease causing microbes are called germs. They can be
seen only a microscope. Microbes are through found all around us. Bacteria, viruses , protozoa
and fungi are four types of microbes.
Microbes are useful to us in many ways such as
1.Some bacteria change milk into curd.
2.Some bacteria also help in digesting food
3.Yeast is a fungus that is used to make bread soft and spongy.
4.Some other bacteria convert the bodies of dead plants and animals into manure.
